We used Hotel Cerro del Sol as a base whilst exploring Granada (plus intermittent pool days!) and found it a charming base. I think some of the previous reviews have been too harsh - its a local hotel and family run, the staff are really friendly and will help you any way they can - and yes their English is not great, but we got by with plenty of smiles with our basic Spanish! You can't judge this against large international hotel chains.
Location - yes there is a hill and no it is not in Granada city centre! Both you should know having read previous reviews/done your research. However walking up the hill means you are rewarded with fabulous views over the Sierra Nevada mountains/hills - absolutely stunning! The little town of Cenes la Vega is nice enough with handy supermarket, bread and fruit shops, bars and a good few decent restaurants. Granada is a very easy 15 min bus ride away.
Rooms - The rooms were very spacious and again - had those fantastic views! TOP TIP - ask for the Sanexo room as has a lovely balcony overlooking the hills and pool. A touch dated - but great size with lovely cool terracotta flooring and air con.
Food - Breakfast was basic, they could have made more effort which wouldn't have taken much, but would really add to the experience. But again it was decent enough and included in the price. We also ate their a few times in the evening - they do a set 3 course menu for 16 euros which was decent enough! lovely local wine too. A note on another review said that the bar wasn't staffed - no it isn't all day as there is often only one or two guests and they man reception. All you do is pop up to reception and they happily come down and serve your drinks - even poolside - with some tapas on the side. Great service.
Only real bugbear was the sunloungers were broken and needed replacing which we mentioned to the staff - so hopefully this has been done.
TOP TIPS - (1) Have dinner and see Flamenco at Venta El Gallo Restaurant up in the caves - AMAZING views of the Alhambra, fab food and a show that gives you goosebumps! (2) Book in advance to see the Alhambra.
Overall we really liked this little hotel - the staff were super helpful booking trips and tours for us, it was very quiet and relaxing with stunning views, the smell of pine in the little garden and a lovely little pool. I would say they could easily make this hotel from 'great' into 'amazing' with a few updates to the decor and furnishing and food - but it really is very charming! A perfect base that I would recommend to anyone visiting Granada for a slightly longer stay!
