“Charming, Characterful Hotel”
Reviewed 2 July 2014

We used Hotel Cerro del Sol as a base whilst exploring Granada (plus intermittent pool days!) and found it a charming base. I think some of the previous reviews have been too harsh - its a local hotel and family run, the staff are really friendly and will help you any way they can - and yes their English is not great, but we got by with plenty of smiles with our basic Spanish! You can't judge this against large international hotel chains.

Location - yes there is a hill and no it is not in Granada city centre! Both you should know having read previous reviews/done your research. However walking up the hill means you are rewarded with fabulous views over the Sierra Nevada mountains/hills - absolutely stunning! The little town of Cenes la Vega is nice enough with handy supermarket, bread and fruit shops, bars and a good few decent restaurants. Granada is a very easy 15 min bus ride away.

Rooms - The rooms were very spacious and again - had those fantastic views! TOP TIP - ask for the Sanexo room as has a lovely balcony overlooking the hills and pool. A touch dated - but great size with lovely cool terracotta flooring and air con.

Food - Breakfast was basic, they could have made more effort which wouldn't have taken much, but would really add to the experience. But again it was decent enough and included in the price. We also ate their a few times in the evening - they do a set 3 course menu for 16 euros which was decent enough! lovely local wine too. A note on another review said that the bar wasn't staffed - no it isn't all day as there is often only one or two guests and they man reception. All you do is pop up to reception and they happily come down and serve your drinks - even poolside - with some tapas on the side. Great service.

Only real bugbear was the sunloungers were broken and needed replacing which we mentioned to the staff - so hopefully this has been done.

TOP TIPS - (1) Have dinner and see Flamenco at Venta El Gallo Restaurant up in the caves - AMAZING views of the Alhambra, fab food and a show that gives you goosebumps! (2) Book in advance to see the Alhambra.

Overall we really liked this little hotel - the staff were super helpful booking trips and tours for us, it was very quiet and relaxing with stunning views, the smell of pine in the little garden and a lovely little pool. I would say they could easily make this hotel from 'great' into 'amazing' with a few updates to the decor and furnishing and food - but it really is very charming! A perfect base that I would recommend to anyone visiting Granada for a slightly longer stay!

Room Tip: Sanexo - overlooking the pool and sierra nevada with a lovely big balcony - worth it!

The good: I chose this place from trip advisor because we had a rental car and were looking for an easy place to get to with parking. Hotel was easy to find and had small off street parking. The hotel itself is very nice with a beautiful bathroom including a towel warmer. Out of our window we had a great view and hotel included breakfast as well as a lovely terrace.
The bad: Reception is terrible. When we checked in we were barely acknowledged. No information was offered and we were led to our rooms. Everytime we left the hotel we were required to leave our keys. One afternoon we decided to return to the hotel around 2:30 to have a drink and enjoy the nice weather on the patio. We were told our rooms were being cleaned and we could not go in. This was very surprising as the hotel is very small and we had been gone since early morning. We were also scolded for bringing in our own food and wine and were told we could not bring it into our rooms. I also should mention that the only way into town is by riding the bus and it is about a 20 minute ride. The hotel sits on top a high hill and when you return you have a long climb up. We did a lot of walking on our trip and the hill was still very exhausting. If you have any health problems and plan on walking this is not the place for you. All in all, this is a nice place and could be enjoyable with some hospitality training on the part of ownership. Would only recommend this place if you do not care how you are treated.

We chose this hotel as we had just one night in Granada and knew we would be arriving a little too late to look around the city.
The hotel is located in a residential street surrounded by houses. The street is very narrow and parking and turning the car is very tight.
We were very disappointed that the restaurant was unable to accommodate us for dinner without a prior reservation. The person behind the front desk was not particularly helpful nor welcoming. No help with bags, no advice for parking etc. But they did give us a good recommendation for a restaurant in the main street of this small town.
The rooms were very basic. It was not quite the little gem of a hotel we had hoped for.
We would like to have tried the restaurant. The pool looked very nice, but we had no time to use it.

Room Tip: OK for a quick overnight stop, but book a table for dinner in advance. A room overlooking the valley...

Most remembered organized and disciplined friendly staff and luxurious interior. My stay was very comfortable. At my requests, I received a response immediately. The room was very comfortable and nicely decorated. Most of all I liked the ratio of staff to guests. The staff was very courteous and kind. Even small misunderstandings and incidents we solved with a smile. I always recommend it to friends and colleagues.

Friendly staff and great customer service. Beautiful views, free parking, free breakfast and we had a great dinner. 15 minute drive to the very popular Sierra Nevada mountains. Overall this was a great hotel, I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone.

We chose this hotel based on the ratings here and the fact it had free parking. Also the breakfast was included which was an added bonus. We were able to take the bus to Granada city centre. Bus number 33 at a cost of 1.20 Euro which you pay the driver directly (20 minutes). We also took the bus back and walked up the hill which was ok.

The downside of this hotel is that it can be a bit noisy. You can hear doors being shut or staff talking downstairs in reception (from the room we were in).

We visited in Winter. There was a heater (a combined aircon/heater) though which really did heat up the room adequately. Despite of the apparent unfortunate acoustics at times, it is still good value for money. Especially because of the breakfast and free parking. The breakfast was not just your run of the mill. There was plenty of choice and the breakfast room was very appealing. I imagine the hotel must be quite good in summer, keeping the heat out and then the lovely terrace during breakfast. The views must also be stunning in summer.

Had a lovely stay here Oct 28-30 2013, we had been warned not to think of taking a car into Granada so a hotel with parking was needed. I took the warning of the steep hill into consideration but decided to risk the climb anyway. yes it is steep but being reasonably fit we were able for the ascent. Remember you'll probably only have to do this once a day.
The room was spotless, with a lovely view over the Sierra Nevada. Very powerful shower and towels changed every day. The bus at the bottom of the hill comes every 10-15 mins and only cost €1.20.You can buy a card and get 10 trips cheaper but we didn't bother, not knowing if we would use it that often, but in hindsight the trip up and down to the Alhambra would have counted too so if you have a family you might want to take this option. I definitely stay here the next time I go to Granada

Room Tip: Ask for a room over looking the mountains/pool
