Owner description: This museum sits on the site of the excavated 12th-century Castillo de San Jorge which in the 15th-century became the first headquarters of Spain’s notorious Inquisition. The museum places in context the events which followed the Christian Reconquest of Spain, when many of the Jews who remained and converted became suspected of heresy, and subject to torture – from water-boarding to the rack - designed to extract confessions.

“My favourite museum in Seville.”
Reviewed 11 May 2014 via mobile

I worked as a tour guide for a few months a few years ago and I always used to recommend people to go here. When I was in Seville I found it almost impossible to find anything out about the more negative aspects of Spain's history, like the Spanish inquisition. This museum was not only the only place I really managed to find but it was presented in a delicate and interesting way, and was well taken care of. I think it was free to get in, though I can't remember for certain.

“No explanation of the InquisUition”
Reviewed 4 May 2014

Well to be fair there was a paragraph explaining the Spanish Inquisition half way round. Quite a nice presentation of the old castle walls but no context or real substance. Disappointing.

“Everything you need to know about the Spanish Inquisition”
Reviewed 13 March 2014

The Castillo de San Jorge was a medieval fortress built on the west bank of the Guadalquivir River in Seville , which was also used as a headquarters and prison in the Spanish Inquisition . It was demolished in the nineteenth century to build a food market. Currently in the underground ruins there is a museum center on Castillo, the Spanish Inquisition and religious repression. It is located in the district of Triana . Next to the food market Alley of the Inquisition, which was part of the fortification. All credit to the designers of this superb museum, informative and graphically presented. Superb. And its FREE.

“Didn't go inside but Sevilla is beautiful.”
Reviewed 20 December 2013

Till next time I will have to wait to go inside and visit this Museum. The day that I was in Sevilla, this museum was not open. I ended up grabbing a cool photograph outside it though, by the museum. You can see it on my instagram page. If you like it, follow me! My name is: Schechter206. I will post it here as well.

“Very informative and well designed”
Reviewed 28 October 2013 via mobile

This museum puts the Spanish Inquisition into its historical context and helped us understand this period of Spanish history. It is housed in the fortress that was the site of the Inquisition in Saville. It is an archeological site that is presented very well, with excellent comentary, graphics and examples. It mentiond but does not dwell on the tortire and executions.
