Reviewed 9 July 2011

We only had one night in Seville and stayed at the hotel Monte Carmelo. We had a terrible time driving to the hotel, and suggest you not take a car into these old Spanish cities if you can help it. It was very difficult to drive to, and the GPS would never have gotten us there despite the coordinates due to road work, closed streets, renamed streets, one ways, pedestrian ways, etc. The parking (reasonable at 10 euros per night and arranged for in advance) was right under the hotel. It was very tight parking and took thirty minutes of jiggling to get parked well for an easy exit the next day, despite it being almost empty when we arrived.

The hotel is a bit worn and dated, but it was formerly elegant, and it was still clean and functional. The bathrooms were large and marvelous, the beds okay, and we had a very quiet night with no noise, smell or other issues. We are a family of four and had requested quiet, connecting rooms, but we were actually placed about as far apart as we could get and still be on the same floor. We asked that the kids be moved closer to our room, but were told they had nothing closer together available. The desk staff was pleasant and at least one person spoke English very well, but they couldn't care less about our problem with the rooms not being together as promised.

The hotel location actually had many advantages we thought. The hotel is in a apartment house/shops sort of residential neighborhood and we really enjoyed strolling along watching the people mingling with their neighbors and the children playing together in the pedestrian areas. We felt we were seeing how these Spanish people really live, not just hanging around with a bunch of other tourists, although there were some of those as well. It was an easy walk across the river to the big tourist sights (5-8 minutes), which were more spectacular and amazing than we had anticipated.

Seville is a great city and we needed at least two days to get even a fair taste of what it had to offer. The Cathedral and the Alcazar are worth almost a whole day on their own. We went to a Flamenco Show booked through the hotel front desk, and it all worked efficiently enough. The hotel would not recommend one show over the other, or advise us on which ticket to buy or whether to eat somewhere else before the show. We were a bit disappointed in the show itself, which left us unsatisfied with the level of guidance and advice provided by the hotel. Several of the performers had definitely seen better days, and they did not perform everything they claimed in their brochures. We were glad we had not purchased the tickets including a meal, as they were pricey and the patrons eating did not appear to be delighted with the fare. We also saw people arguing about their drink bills, but we had no trouble with that.

In all we felt the hotel was pretty good, but not the standout we expected. We were glad we did not have to rely on the front desk for tourist advice or guidance, as we detected a total lack of interest in advising us. They were happy to book tickets and give directions if we specified exactly what we wanted, but they did not make recommendations or suggestions to help us navigate their lovely city. The separated rooms after being promised nearby if not connecting rooms hurt the experience, but it was still a good choice over all.

Dear Sir:

Thanks for your feedback.

We regret that your stay in some respects not entirely expected.

The fact of not being able to provide adjoining rooms depends largely on the occupation they have at the moment. With the reservation made in advance, this problem might not have existed.

As for the shows offered at the hotel reception, we can not confirm whether or not expected, since it is an additional service we offer, but that depends directly on us. In any case, tell us about them.

We hope to serve them in any of our hotels in Seville, Cadiz, Huelva and Malaga and check the quality of the services we offer to our customers.

Yours sincerely

As already written, this hotel is just 15 min walk from the cathedral and is located in a quiet area. No noise from the streets. Just around the corner, there's a pedestrian avenue full of shops, cafes, etc I guess that anything you could need can be found here.
Our room was quite spacious, very clean, with a very comfortable bed & pillows; spotless and neat sheets. There's also a large lcd and a minifridge with water, juices, beer etc Bathroom was ok, towels were clean and new! Air-con and wifi were perfectly working.
Buffet breakfast was really complete, I loved their bread and pastries! Then you have eggs, ham, cheese, cereals, yogurt, juices... anything you want.
Just one notice: rooms can lack privacy, we could hear our neighbors each time and in each situation and this was really boring...

We often like to stay a few steps (15 minutes walk in this case) from the main tourist destinations. Not only do you save some money, but you also have the chance to experience the local culture. This is definitely the case with the Monte Carmelo hotel; around the corner is the busy Calle Asuncion pedestrian shopping street. The street is refreshingly devoid of tourists and there are some great little cafes where you can sit and enjoy the local street life. The hotel itself is very clean; our room was spacious and included a bath tub. There's also a safe for valuables and free WIFI internet. As the room faced a small courtyard, it was also very quiet at night. The hotel staff were friendly, helpful and more than willing to converse with us in English. Breakfast was 10 Euros a person per day, but we found well worth it. The food is fresh and there is a large variety of choices. These include fresh orange juice, a selection of (I think baked on the premises) pastries, Spanish cut meats, cheeses, breads and rolls, fresh fruits and the list goes on. A nice way to start the day.

Hotel is great value for money

Rooms are clean, spacious, well equipped and the staff are helpful. Free WiFi access

The Hotel is situated south the the river away from the city centre tourist attractions but is only about a 10 minute walk over the river to get there if you need. The location is just of a nice high street which provides for all your needs, food + drink, clothes.

I would highly recommend

The hotel is located on the southern bank of the river in residential area. It was about 15 min walk to the Cathedral. We parked our car in the hotel's garage for 10 euro per night.
The hotel seems to be recently renovated. There are computers in the lobby and WiFi in the rooms. People at the reception desk speak very good English; they are professional and helpful.
The room was small but very clean and tastefully decorated for a budget hotel. Windows are soundproof; and with the windows closed and temperature control in the room, it was comfortable night sleep.
GPS did not recognize the street name "Virgen de la Victoria". Either old street name "Turia" or coordinates are to be used.
The hotel is a good value for staying in magnificent Seville.

Modern hotel on Triana side of river only 15 minutes walk from major sites with many shops, cafes and restaurants much closer. Spotless room, no view, but so what when it's all on your doorstep?

extremely helpful and friendly staff, guided us to our first Semana Santa procession, esaily found others once we'd got the hang of it. Staff noted check out day was my birthday and presented me with a small gift, nice touch!

Yes, there was some noise from other rooms, particularly during and immediately after the Barca/Real Madrid game, but overall excellent value and I would definitely stay there again.

Room Tip: Eat & drink on Genova, not Betis!

This hotel is located in the Triana area of Seville and thus is across the river from the main tourist areas. However probably because of this I found the hotel to be very good value compared to hotels located in the main tourist areas. In addition it is only a 15 minute walk or so to the Cathedral, the Alcazar and other main sights. There is a bus stop about a 5 minute walk away where buses C1 and C2 stop. Both these buses go to the main train station (Santa Justa) via Plaza de Espana.

We could hear some street noise at night in our room but this was fairly limited. Indeed I would imagine, due to it's location, this hotel suffers less street noise compared to many other hotels located in busier areas.

Our room was spacious and very clean. It also had shutters on the windows which kept out light very well. The room had a mini bar which was fairly reasonably priced. The bathroom was also clean and a good size.

The breakfast was very good with a large selection of food.

The staff were very friendly and helpful.

Overall a very good hotel in the great city of Seville.

Dear Sir,

Thank you very much for your opinion about our hotel.

We really appreciate our hotel that qualifies as very good. Indeed, the distance to the center of the town is small and there is also public transportation near the hotel. We interpret his words that his break was good.

We hope to have you with us again, or in another of our hotels in Malaga, Cadiz and Huelva. Until then, accept my best regards.
