We only had one night in Seville and stayed at the hotel Monte Carmelo. We had a terrible time driving to the hotel, and suggest you not take a car into these old Spanish cities if you can help it. It was very difficult to drive to, and the GPS would never have gotten us there despite the coordinates due to road work, closed streets, renamed streets, one ways, pedestrian ways, etc. The parking (reasonable at 10 euros per night and arranged for in advance) was right under the hotel. It was very tight parking and took thirty minutes of jiggling to get parked well for an easy exit the next day, despite it being almost empty when we arrived.
The hotel is a bit worn and dated, but it was formerly elegant, and it was still clean and functional. The bathrooms were large and marvelous, the beds okay, and we had a very quiet night with no noise, smell or other issues. We are a family of four and had requested quiet, connecting rooms, but we were actually placed about as far apart as we could get and still be on the same floor. We asked that the kids be moved closer to our room, but were told they had nothing closer together available. The desk staff was pleasant and at least one person spoke English very well, but they couldn't care less about our problem with the rooms not being together as promised.
The hotel location actually had many advantages we thought. The hotel is in a apartment house/shops sort of residential neighborhood and we really enjoyed strolling along watching the people mingling with their neighbors and the children playing together in the pedestrian areas. We felt we were seeing how these Spanish people really live, not just hanging around with a bunch of other tourists, although there were some of those as well. It was an easy walk across the river to the big tourist sights (5-8 minutes), which were more spectacular and amazing than we had anticipated.
Seville is a great city and we needed at least two days to get even a fair taste of what it had to offer. The Cathedral and the Alcazar are worth almost a whole day on their own. We went to a Flamenco Show booked through the hotel front desk, and it all worked efficiently enough. The hotel would not recommend one show over the other, or advise us on which ticket to buy or whether to eat somewhere else before the show. We were a bit disappointed in the show itself, which left us unsatisfied with the level of guidance and advice provided by the hotel. Several of the performers had definitely seen better days, and they did not perform everything they claimed in their brochures. We were glad we had not purchased the tickets including a meal, as they were pricey and the patrons eating did not appear to be delighted with the fare. We also saw people arguing about their drink bills, but we had no trouble with that.
In all we felt the hotel was pretty good, but not the standout we expected. We were glad we did not have to rely on the front desk for tourist advice or guidance, as we detected a total lack of interest in advising us. They were happy to book tickets and give directions if we specified exactly what we wanted, but they did not make recommendations or suggestions to help us navigate their lovely city. The separated rooms after being promised nearby if not connecting rooms hurt the experience, but it was still a good choice over all.
