“Incantation at Inca”
Reviewed 18 March 2014

First class budget hotel in an ideal location in central Zaragoza. Friendly staff (with some English) and very very clean. Rooms are basic but comfortable for a short stay. Not sure about the glass paneled doors on the bathrooms though? Wi-fi a bit hit and miss on the top floor but otherwise ok. For the more mature traveler just be aware that all the clubs close around 4am and there can be a lot of noise on the street around that time!!
Great cafe y tostada in the cafe for just 2 euro to start your day and of course you will be serenaded in the morning by the incantations of the choiristers calling the faithful to the Basilica which is just around the corner.

Room Tip: rooms facing onto calle manisfestation can be a bit noisy at weekends around 4am when the clubs clos...

Found in a quiet side street of the historic centre of Zaragoza, just a few steps away from the Basilica and the Cathedral (two of the city´s main attractions), the Inca is an excellent choice. The rooms are clean, bright and nicely decorated, and the staff is very friendly and informative. I made use of a special offer, and got a bottle of wine included, and felt very priviledged.

Because our flight into Madrid was 5 hours late, by the time we'd driven into Zaragossa it was the wee hours. Somehow we managed to attract an angel, in the form of some sort of worker in a neon green vest who was just getting off work, who led us to the Hotel Inca, which we otherwise would never, ever have found. It was after 2:00 a.m. when we arrived, but the neighborhood was in full swing. A man in a bar across the street offered to give me tango/salsa lessons then and there, but I demurred. What I'm getting to is that even at that late hour, downtown Zaragossa was up and at 'em, with crowds of young folk milling around. Inside the hotel, in spite of the late hour, we were met with utter courtesy and gentility by the concierge, who spoke perfect French, which was a great relief since my Spanish is essentially non-existant. He was a Berber, it turned out, from Algeria.

Our room was tiny, but gracious, with a balcony overlooking the interesting street life. The bathroom on the other hand, was ample and modern.

Zaragossa is an interesting city. In spite of its early history as an independent Muslim state, it was conquered by the Catholic Aragonese in the 11th century, who in time (brutally) forced Muslims and Jews to convert or leave. Zaragossa remains the capital of the autonomous community of Aragon (under the nationality of Spain) today. Catherine of Aragon was of course the infamous first wife of Henry VIII.

We came here to see Zaragossa's beautiful Basilica del Pilar, on account of my interest in pre-Christian iconography. (The basilica may be the oldest church dedicated to Mary, but of course has older antecedents.) We were not disappointed. The cathedral was surprisingly well-attended on a Friday mid-morning, with a mass going on at one end of the vast building and groups of people sort of chatting away at the other.

It couldn't be closer to almost all the attractions in town. Places of interest, eating places and shops are all within easy walking distance. Staff are very friendly although not very informed on the services in town but not to worry: the Tourist Information Office is just around the corner.
Very annoyed with their single room policy: they advertise three single rooms (with single bed)
but the rate is the same as that of a double. Two people in our party paid for a double (not for single use) as we paid as a couple. The breakfast service (or lack of it) is something else that doesn't seem to make sense. They don't offer a rate with breakfast included and they quote 10.60 or 70 euros per breakfast. We discovered that breakfast is served at the bar or in a tiny room in the reception area that they call Cafeteria. That was enough to put us off breakfast but we walked out of the hotel and understood why the management are not very keen on serving breakfast: just a few yards away there are scores of bars where one can have a decent breakfast for much cheaper (16/17 euros for 4 people). Anyway the lack of breakfast service was made up by a nice complimentary bottle of local wine waiting for us in each room.
A bit of ordinary maintenance would make the hotel really excellent however we would not hesitate to recommend this hotel and stay there on another occasion. Very good value for money.

Room Tip: If not bothered with the view ask for a back room. You will see the back yard of other buldings and...
