Spent one day in Bilbao - which is not enough. Bilbao was the surprise city on the recent drive from Italy to southern Spain via Bilbao, and Salamanca. It's a beautiful city with much more to see and do than solely the Guggenheim. The population is very friendly, helpful, and a number speak multi-languages. But enough of the city. The hotel, HGB, is nice enough, but a 25 minute walk into the centro. There is public transportation however, including a bus that passes by the hotel and street cars which stop roughly 3/8ths of a mile away; but then you have to walk up a steep hill to get to the hotel. The room was large, well equipped and modern. Bathroom was very nice and modern. The hotel staff we dealt with were excellent. If you want to eat breakfast at the hotel - book it the night before and it is much less money. Public parking is impossible to find by the hotel as the locals seem to abandon their cars for days on end without moving them. Hotel parking is the only way to go. The hotel in reality is more likely a 3+ star. There is no workout facility, or pool, etc. Nevertheless, the Wi-Fi is super, the cost was quite reasonable, and if you walk to centro you see some very neat area of Bilbao. Definitely worth a stay at the HGB. jr

Be prepared for a walk uphill as hotel is situated at the top of the town. Nice view towards the river and the hills. Big spacious lobby and average size rooms. breakfast area very busy and very very noisy as dirty trolleys were being removed. Staff didn't seem too happy either. problem with inadequate airconditioning in room and although we complained about this nothing was done to resolve the situation.Duty manager not available. Lobby was the coolest place.Reception staff for the most part were very polite on check in.

We spent only one night in this hotel during our Spanish road trip but it was a very nice experience.
The hotel is situated close to city center, there is a secure parking below the hotel (12 euro/night) and also outdoor parking around hotel but it may be very hard to find free space. If you prefer garage parking pay attention that you have to turn right onto the pavement near the hotel entrance.
At the check-in we got an offer to upgrade for just 10 euro so we received superior room with maginificent view.
The room itself is very modern and spacious.
Reception's staff is very helpful.
Wi-Fi is quite fast and it's free of charge.

Room Tip: Nice view - superior corner rooms facing the bridge

“Two nights in Bilbao"

From the airport to the hotel

We stayed two nights in Sercotel Gran Bilbao from October 22nd until October 24th. We arrived at 08.11 AM in the morning at Bilbao airport. After leaving the airport, we took the Bizkaibus 3247 to the centre. We bought two tickets on the bus. Total costs: Euro 2.80.

After the second stop (Plaza Moyua), we got off. At this big round about, we searched for the metrostation. That was very easy to find because of the so called Fosteritos. These are the entrances of the metrostation at Plaza Moyua. At the metrostation we bought a Barikcard to travel with the public transport.

Then we took the Bilbobus number 77 towards Mina del Morro. The last stop of the Bilbobus is in front of the Sercotel. We were very early in the hotel (before 10.00 AM), but it was possible to check in and got a room on the third floor.

Room We were given a very large room with three seperate beds, but we just needed two beds. The receptionist told that this was the last room available, otherwise we had to wait until 01.00 PM.
The bathroom was spacious! There were no other facilities in the room, only a minibar. See the pictures attached.

Breakfast The breakfastbuffet was from 07.15 until 10.30. It was various, but not very tasty.

We thought it was a good three star hotel, not four!

After all we had a sunny stay in Bilbao!

Quite good value if you are looking for 4star hotel treatment without the fuss. Modern and with little character(business feel) but the staff are incredibly helpful, especially on reception.
10 min walk down a steepish hill to the Old Town which we found very charming and with more character to walk around in the even ins than the new town. Check out Calle Jardinos for 2 very nice restaurants ( Gorbea and La Delicisio). Plaza Mayor for a drink first if you don't mind the noise.
You can catch a bus right outside the hotel to all the sites in the new town or a tram from the Old Town.
Secure car parking but you need to know that you can turn right into it up the pavement right next to reception otherwise you will drive around in one way circles like I did. Take extreme care driving in and out as it is narrow and two way. Look out for the useful mirrors on the bends.
Guggenheim was spectacular ( tip -you can get a great view of it from the top of the red bridge on the opposite river bank (there,s a lift) and lived up to expectations as did Museo De Bellas Artes.
A great city with plenty to see and very walker friendly and felt very safe.

The hotel is just 10 minutes walk from the old town. There big windows in the lobby looking out on a suspension bridge across a small canion. The room: generous of size, good bed and plenty of natural light. It is well equipped, although an electric kettle, for those that need to finish the day with a cup of tea, is missing, bring your own and complain! The room lacks individuality, not a speck of colour to be found in the room. The bathroom is comfortable with plenty of room for all the vital creams and potions. The staff are very friendly and helpefull to make your stay pleasant. All looks very bright and joyous, especially when the wheather is so perfect, 27 degrees centigrade.

Room Tip: Higher floors better view and cleaner air

I stayed with friends one night in this hotel when we arrived in Bilboa. It was clean, rooms large and copious breakfast. Found a place to park outside in the street and walked down the hill to pick up the tram to the Guggenheim. This was an excellent choice of a reasonable price for the start of our trip to Northern Spain.

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room
