“Super location and comfortable room”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 March 2012

The best about this hotel is its location. It's super central! Additionally, our room was really nice, stylish and freshly renovated. What I like about most historical grand five star hotels like the Carlton in Bilbao is the fact to enter the room you need to walk through two doors. That makes the room nice and quiet and you don't really hear anyone on the corridor.

The only downside to our room was that the neighbouring rooms' toilets made some noise when flushing. We could easily hear our neighbours flushing.

Room Tip: Not close to the lifs.

Hotel is located on main plaza, so very convenient for walking around the city. There is also a metro and bus station just outside, so easy transport. My husband was there for business, so I had a great time just walking around the shops, searching out locations for pinxtos later. There were numerous good places within 5 min walk. Staff was very helpful with recommendations and reservations as well.
Minor issues--I often have trouble with European showers--this was no exception. Hubby had to figure out how to get water to showerhead (regular pull-up mechanism, but too stiff for me to move), and even on the fifth day the floor, wall and mat outside were soaked. Dual sound TV was a plus, as was pillow menu. Very small fridge, no coffeemaker, and no clock. We used the time and weather sign outside at the bank on the corner.
Only major issue I had was no peephole in door, and hotel lobby was often crowded, with easy access to elevators, so I never knew who would be on the other side of the door. I do not speak Spanish--cleaners did not speak English. That is fine, of course, but as there was no chain or peephole on door I was a little nervous when someone knocked.
Breakfast was very good--made-to-order eggs, fresh churros, etc.--and generous hours to 11AM. On Sat did not start until 8 though, so we got a later start than we expected, as we had rented a car to drive the countryside.
Bed was great--a real king-size, and not two mattresses shoved together.
This was cheaper than the Gran Domine, where we stayed last time, and much better located for seeing more of the city.

We spent a weekend at the Hotel Carlton. The hotel is well located in the center of Bilbao, an easy stroll to the Guggenheim as well as to tthe old city. Staff were extremely pleasant and helpful, providing restaurant recommendations as well as practical assistance (opening a recalcitrtant safe deposit box at midnight). We arrived after an overnight flight from NY, and our rooms were available right away, at 10 am. Our room was large and pleasant, located on a side street off the square. The room was showing its age a bit, with chipped tile in the bathroom, but it was spacious and well-lighted.

My only caveat is that the hotel hosts many weddings, and that activity dominates the public space, as well as the attention of the staff. A large wedding took place on Saturday night, and the main salon was closed to hotel guests. The lobby was filled with wedding guests throughout the evening, making navigating through the hotel challenging, and conversations with staff virtually impossible.

Fantastic location - right in the heart of a very walkable city and minutes from the main attractions. Free wifi, SAP-enabled TV (so you can listen to dubbed channels in English) and a wonderful spread for breakfast. Service at the front desk was friendly, helpful and courteous. The rooms are well appointed though the silver painted nighttable with the fake drawers could be upgraded. The bar doesn't serve drinks measured by the exact ounce - a refreshing approach to service from North America. I look forward to going back - next time with the family.

Room Tip: There's an inner courtyard if you're looking for a room with a bit quieter facing. If there...

We stayed at this hotel with many of our guests during our wedding in Spain. While we did not get married at the hotel, most of us stayed here for the whole week leading up to the wedding. The staff was very accommodating to us and all of our guests, especially since many did not speak Spanish. The rooms are very large for a European hotel and the location is unbeatable. There is some interesting history with the hotel too, for example Hemingway wrote A Farewell to Arms while staying at the hotel. Overall, nice hotel and great location!

My family and I flew into Bilbao for the day to visit the Guggenheim. Upon arriving into Bilbao I wasn't feeling that great and within an hour was feeling so awful that I was looking for flights back to Barcelona. Unable to find any earlier flights my husband popped into the Carlton hotel to see about getting me a room to stay in. We were able to check in for just the day not overnight which is usually hard to do. They were super accommodating and friendly and very helpful. My husband and son were able to visit the Guggenheim without me as I rested in the hotel. I'm not sure what I would have done if I hadn't been able to sty here . The accommodations and hotel are also very pretty and totally top notch I would stay here if I wasn't sick. Thank you to the wonderful staff that helped us salvage the day.

Stayed two nights at this hotel, very good location. Air Con, not very good, but the room itself was big and nice. We opened the window to get more air and that was not smart because Athletic Bilbao won their homegame and had a party outside for a couple of hours.

Room Tip: Try a room in the back of the hotel.
