“A great stay at a clean, well-run hotel. Great value!”
Reviewed 24 March 2014

We enjoyed our stay at Sercotel Coliseo. We checked in relatively easily and requested a quiet room, which they sought to accommodate by having us facing the interior of the hotel rather than the exterior. The first room they put us in had a toilet that was not flushing properly, so they quickly re-located us to another room - the second room's layout was definitely not as great as the first (smaller, poorly laid out), but it was still interior facing, thus still achieving the request we had for something quiet. The rooms themselves were clean, well appointed and, amazingly enough, had no carpet (a huge plus for me). We had zero issues and really enjoyed the stay and the service. NOTE: For the first few nights of our five day stay, we opted for the buffet style breakfast in hotel for, I believe, an additional 11 euros per person. We soon realized that we could get a cheaper, more authentic, fresh and tasty breakfast in nearby cafes.

On a recent trip to Spain, my wife and I decided to spend a week in Bilbao at the end of our vacation. We had been to Bilbao ten years ago while on a hiking trip in northern Spain, but only had an opportunity to spend one night in the city. We had always wanted to return and see what Bilbao has to offer. We selected the Sercotel Coliseo based on its location and from online reviews we had read. The hotel is located in the heart of the commercial area of downtown Bilbao, but still within easy walking distance to museums, the river front, and the old central city. The hotel was comfortable and the staff was accommodating. Our room was located above a street with several bars, shops, and restaurants. With our window open, we could hear the noise from the street below late at night, but with the window closed, all the noise from the street was shut out. The front desk staff was very helpful directing us to sites and restaurants in the city along with providing annotated maps so we could easily find our way. Unlike staying at one of the many hotels along the river front, the Coliseo caused us to explore parks, shops, restaurants, and bars that we might not have experienced had we stayed in the center of Bilbao's action along the river. Our room was nicely decorated and comfortable. We had only a few exceptions, like the absence of space to place toiletries by the sink in the bathroom, and no place to set soap or shampoo in the shower other than on the floor. European hotel rooms tend to be a bit smaller than comparable hotel rooms in the United States, so we appreciate that space is at a premium, but when staying in a hotel for more than just overnight, these added amenities would have been helpful.

This hotel is in a great location - 10 mins walk to the hotel from the airport bus, 10 mins to the old town and about 15 mins to the Guggenheim, 5 min to a metro station. There's a bar or two right by the hotel and one of the main lively streets with bars is just 5 mins walk round the corner. The bedroom and bathroom were spacious although our only gripe was that the bathroom had two glass panels so if you put the light on in the night it lit up inside the bedroom! Also you had to sit at an angle on the loo as it was positioned by the sink with no space for your legs (and I'm only 5'3!!) Had 2 great nights sleeps so it was well sound proofed. Friendly and efficient reception staff. We didn't eat breakfast as it was too expensive. I'd recommend this hotel and would stay here again if I visit this wonderful city in the future.

Great 4* hotel for the price in central Bilbao. Not a bad thing to say about the place so will list a few useful points:

Location - Very close to the Old Town, short walk over the bridge. Close to the shops and bars (Cafe Iruna highly recommended) and close enough to the Guggenheim to walk. There is even a cheap restaurant right over the road.

Service - Staff speak perfect English and our taxi to the airport came within 5 minutes. Maid service the best I've experienced

Rooms - Very comfortable bed, spacious bathroom with large shower. Loads of information available about Bilbao. Mini bar very handy! Safe easy to use.

Secure - Reception on 2nd floor but you can only operate the lift to the rooms with your room key itself.

Style - Business-like but very modern, sleek and clean

Highly recommend

Room Tip: All good as far I am aware

This was a very good hotel centrally located in Bilbao and walking distance to the old town and the Guggenheim. Breakfast was overpriced so we skipped it and ate a lot cheaper in the neighborhood. Overall a good experience with modern facilities.

Very much a business hotel, but a great location for all that Bilbao has to offer. Shares the building with a casino, reception is on second floor, so rather anonymous lobby. Contemporary styled big bedroom and bathroom, underground car park reasonably priced. Close to Grand Via and El Corte Ingles department store, Calle Ledesma for tapas bars and relocated Tourist Office on Plaza Circular.

This hotel is just a short walk from a bridge to the old town and in a very good position. It is a pleasant walk along the river to the Guggenheim. The hotel is spotless and attractive and our room had the most comfortable extra wide bed. The bathroom was very smart and had good toiletries. Our air conditioning was not working but the room wasn't too warm so we put up with that and opened a window. The only disappointment was an empty, unmanned bar area so although we could no doubt have ordered a drink, we would have felt lonely in such a quiet room. Overall the hotel Is great with pleasant, helpful staff and it is excellent value given its quality and location. We had a great two nights in Bilbao.
