“OK, but nothing special”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 February 2012

This is a 4 Star hotel in the centre of the city. It's a good location and the hotel is spotlessly clean and tidy. This is the only hotel in Bilbao that retains a doorman: he seems to be there day and night, always cheerful and always on the ball to help you order a taxi - very much a plus for the hotel.

The downside for me was how expensive eating in was. I got back tired and did not fancy going out to eat, but a room service dinner (a simple "plato combinado", a salad and a bottle of water) set me back a cool 35 Euros; anything more upmarket could double that price tag. Add on another 15 Euros for Internet and the extras became quite expensive. When I got down to breakfast at 9 a good part of the hot breakfast options were finished and, despite waiting a while, no more scrambled eggs appeared for example. There were fewer healthy breakfast options than I would expect (no sign of muesli and although there was a sign advertising the availability semi-skimmed milk it was far from obvious which jug it referred to). Overall I was not impressed by the breakfast, although the breakfast room was, like everything, comfortable and impeccably clean.

Another item that disappointed me was that when I opened the curtains to get some daylight I saw at once why they were closed... the room faced onto a very depressing small void with concrete walls in front; the curtains stayed closed!

Room Tip: Check that you don't get a back room. If you do you will have a depressing view.

Stayed there for 2 nights in a double room - very clean, nice bathroom, friendly staff. The breakfast was great - a big selection of breads, meat, tortillas .. Would totally recommend it. The location is also very convenient - close to everything (Guggenheim, old town ...). Didn't use the spa, so I can not comment on that.

I stayed here for 3 nights in late January early February 2012.

Upside: Location, small but comfortable room, well decorated, it was quite cheap

Downside: bar was a little bizarre, internet was over €30 for 2 days!! Huge queues at checkout

This hotel was a bit more expensive than some of the alternatives which were advertised for the same budget online, so we decided to splash out a bit more for the "spa" that was advertised. In reality, this is a room that is dilapidated, dirty and dishevelled. The "jacuzzi" wasn't working and the "steam room" was a shower with a (dirty) 2 seater seat. The spa makes you want to leave the minute you go in there. We were opposite the school yard which was noisy (on friday) A bus-load of American teenage tourists took up the entire lobby one night. The nightclub noise didn't seem too bad, but we were there off-season. The reception staff were grudgingly obliging and needed to get themselves a new, more interesting job. On the positive side, the hotel was in a good location and there was a helpful handyman who came to fix our TV at an awkward time ( later at night). There were good thick blackout curtains and the bed was comfy. If you want to pay budget prices, don't spend extra for the spa... just go to one of the cheaper alternatives without the spa.

Room Tip: The rooms beside the school were noisy in the morning

I stayed here after staying at the fabulous Silken Domine a couple days previously. This is probably the reason I found my stay at Ercilla to be so very disappointing. The reason we chose the hotel over others was mainly on price and location, but also because it was advertised on the Expedia website under the spa category as having a Turkish bath/hamman.

In reality, we found grotty jacuzzi with a layer of dead flies floating on a filthy scum. The 'solarium' revealed itself to be a crappy balcony with balding Astro turf and the 'Turkish bath' a decrepit shower with seat. When we quizzed the receptionist about the 'spa' facilities, he simply shrugged.

I thought I'd cheer myself up at the lack of spa facilities by having a nice soak in a bath. Firstly, I had been given a room that only had a shower, so I went next door to use my friend's bath, only to discover the cleaners had failed to wipe away pubic hairs and the water drained away from the bath after 5mins due to the faulty plug. Grrrr!

This hotel is in dire need of a refurb. The room smelt of stale smoke and there were dodgy looking stains on the carpets.

If you need somewhere central to rest your weary head this is adequate. If you are looking for a bit of pampering in at a spa, this is totally inadequate.
