“Average, but lacking in key areas”
Reviewed 7 October 2010

The hotel is indeed located quite centrally and is convenient for exploring the city. I also found the rooms quite clean and of average size.

Where it lets itself down however is:

The reception staff are not very friendly, and always seem to be more interested in doing something else rather than to pay you any attention.

The room did not have any tea / coffee making facilities. Maybe this is normal and is not a problem for most people, but I thought it worth pointing out as I missed having my coffee when I wake up.

I had a room on the 4th floor, facing onto the road. The road is not very busy, but there is enough traffic (and workmen) at all hours of the night to keep the light sleeper awake. Of course some noise is expected in a city center hotel, but the windows were quite ineffectual at blocking out any noise - in fact people talking on the street could be heard with the windows shut.

The hotel boasts free Wifi. I would beg to differ! It may be free, but I had better speeds on my old dial up modem in the 90's. This despite having an excellent signal strength that reported a possible speed of 54M.

All in all, there are worse places I have stayed, but was expecting a little better from this hotel.

We stayed at the Hotel Abando for the first night of a week's holiday in the Basque country and Northern Spain. As a former local to Bilbao I knew that the hotel was centrally located and better value than others.

When we checked-in, I found the staff rude and dissinterested. The room was even worse, while it wasn't to a modern standard (we can accept this) it smelt of cigarrettes, espcially the old mattress and pillows.

The management need to raise the standard of the hotel to make sure it meets it's four-star rating. As it stands it has the cleanliness of a hostal.

Only booked in for the one night, but had a pleasant stay. The hotel is in a good location, within walking distance to the centre and the Guggenheim museum. Our room was large and very clean. Friendly staff too. The hotel has a private underground car park (not free) which was really useful as it's not the easiest city to find parking spaces.

The hotel is in a great location, very close to the old town & other main sights. The hotel room was big and clean, although despite asking for a non-smoking room our room had a very strong smoke smell & there was also a cigarette hole in the quilt cover. Other main downside is the noise- the walls are very thin to the point where we were kept awake by someone snoring in another room! I suggest you bring earplugs! I agree with other reviews that reception staff are not very friendly. Otherwise hotel was decent for the price paid of €60

We have just returned from a 3 night stay at the Abando Hotel Bilbao. The location of the hotel is great & within walking distance to everything. The metro stop is also close by.My only complaint on the hotel is the pictures of the rooms on their website could'nt be more deceiving the rooms are quite dated & nothing like what we saw when booking.I asked the receptionist could we be moved to a better more modern room & was told they all looked the same so just to keep this in mind the modern contemporary rooms on the website don't look anything like the actual rooms.Overall a good hotel with good breakfast area & bar.I would recommend.

Efficient, friendly, clean, and well maintained hotel which is only a few minutes walk from the major attractions. Plenty of Tapas bar life and a few minutes from the river.
Rooms are well maintained and spacious. Reception staff were helpful and friendly.
Down side was the 12e for breakfast and the same if you wanted to watch a movie on TV. We ate breakfast across the road in a small Tapas Bar for 15e for all four of us.
We will stay again

Lets do the good things first (1) Clean (Cardinal sin of any hotel) (2) good size rooms (3) well located for either the 'newer' part of Bilbao, or the older part across the river, and within easy reach of the Guggenheim. The not so good?..(1) Reception staff were not the most attentive and a tad curt. Having arrived early, all the frosty reception we had needed was a 'tut' and a waved finger, and I would have sworn I was back at school outside the Headmasters office (2) No tea/coffee in rooms (3) No information on Bilbao in room (4) not a great view out of our bedrom window, unless you have a craving for enclosed spaces.

Still, breakfast was good, decoration and physical ambience was fine, and our continued experience of the Spanish Basques led us to believe that this apparent stoicism, is actually a local trait, which you clearly should not take personally.

Finally, I heartily recommend the Guggenheim. Its a gloriously eccentric, weird, wonderful and thoroughly enjoyable experience, both in itself and for the exhibits. However, do yourself a huge favour, and take advantge of the hand held personal commentary phones. Without them, the whole things makes far less sense.
