“A great hotel close to the Guggenheim”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 August 2011

This hotel, close to the guggenheim, museo de bellas artes and a park, has a beautiful interior with modern design, large rooms and an atrium style reception area. The bar area, with leather seating has an informal eating area next to it and there is also a restaurant and a swimming pool with a view. Some rooms have views of the river. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Book your car space ahead as the car park at the hotel gets full but you can park in an underground car park in the town about 300 yards away. The old town is a walk away but if you want to stay for Bilbao for a few days in a modern stylish hotel and to visit the galleries this is the hotel for you. Very reasonable prices too.

Stayed here two separate times in a weeks time. The front desk personnel were wonderful, so helpful. Arranged an early check in after a long travel day/night. Good location for seeing Bilbao and the sites. Do take the funicular to the top of Bilbao and check out the cafes.

Spent two nights here and was very impressed with the standard of the room, with a good-sized en-suite bathroom and all spotlessly clean. Good restaurant, stylish public areas and reception staff with fluent English. Very easy walk along the river bank to the Guggenheim and our room had great views across waterways to the hills outsid the town. Parking underneath the hotel was secure and good value. Swimming pool is small, but I had it to myself, which was luxury.

We staid for 7 days with our 2 kids to visit Bilbao and the neighourhood.

Perfect 5 stars hotel with all you can ask for. Our family rooms was big enough although the beds could be larger.

Nice small half outdoor swimming pool. Good fitness room

Pefect service from all personnel (bar, restaurant, reception,...)

This is really a "grand hotel", with all the services to be expected. The breakfast room is magnificent – groundfloor facing the nearby park. However, I have to warn of some negative points concerning the rooms sold as "premium", on the 10th floor. First, I was taken aback by a persistent bad smell in the bathroom. Airconditioning off, the permanent ventilation system was very noisy at night. There is no inner door to shut off sounds from the corridor. The balcony is big but offers no privacy since the screens separating it from the neighbours are almost transparent. I'd probably been more satisfied if I had chosen a standard room!

Overall: Excellent: Very nice hotel with plenty of hidden treasures that include a gym, swimming pool on the 6th floor and 2 restaurants on site with one including a bar. Exceptional service for non-speaking Spanish guest. Able to exchange dollars for euros at no service charge. Wi-Fi free in the lobby.

Food: Free breakfast buffett (very large) was great for the first 2 mornings, but they serve the same items. Limited menu offerings in the Q2 Bar at night. Limited beer options also. Downfall: not able to eat outside, just drink.

Room: Nice rooms with flat screen and marble bathroom (2 types of toilets and shower and bath). Note: Need room card to keep lights on. Very energy efficient. Dark shades are a plus since sun sets are around 10pm. Limited english channels in the room. Get a king (not one they throw 2 singles together). Shower can be tricky since water goes from hot to luke warm and back to hot. Safe is a plus. Wi-Fi is not free in room ($12 euro a day or $4 an hour). No clock in the room either. There is a mini-fridge but make sure you let the front desk know that you will be placing your own items in there so you will not be charged. No ice bucket but there is an ice machine you can fill your cups up with in the room.

Attractions: Short walk to mall (across the street), Guggenheim Museum within 15 minute walk on riverwalk, Old Town within 25 minute walk by the river. Very clean city with parks. Watch out for running dogs and poop on the ground.

Room Tip: Corner room a plus. Make sure to get a king.

We first stayed at the Melia when it was a Sheraton and absolutely loved it. It is still the best place to base yourself while in Bilbao, located practically next door to the Guggenheim. This time I have to say our 8th floor executive room was looking a little battered around the edges but was still very elegant, clean and comfortable. The hotel has two restaurants. I can't speak to the Aizian gastronomic operation run by a well-known local chef : but I can recommend the hotel's Basque restaurant, Quatre. We had one of the best 3-course meals we've ever had in Spain, really delicious and very reasonable at only 26 euros. The Melia also has a lovely little pool, which is just the job after you've been out urban hiking in the old town. One of our favourite things to do in Bilbao is go bar hopping around Plaza Nueva, sampling local txakoli and pinxtos, some of which are incredibly creative. It's lovely walking back along the river to the hotel.

My only major negative comment about the Melia is that they charge 12 euros per day for internet access, which allows you to only use one device. If you want to use a PC and a smart phone, you have to pay twice. Very cheesy. Also they failed to tell us on check in that although check out is officially at noon, they usually allow you an extra hour at no cost, then charge you 15 euros an hour. Very convenient. We only found out about this policy while we were hanging around the lobby waiting for our flight home.
