Modern hotel backing onto a park great views from the rooms that side. Rooms spacious and well designed. Comfy bed. Expresso machine rather than a kettle (but you are in Spain) Nice bathroom, good toiletries, good hairdryer. Lovely balcony overlooking park. I liked the room. Staff friendly and helpful. Restaurant good for a hotel, we had the E14.50 set three course and were happy with it. My only gripe was that the small, but nice, hotel pool didn't open until 9am so my swim at 8.30 before breakfast didn't happen. Within easy reach of the airport by hire car or taxi aprox 15mins. Easy walk to the Guggenheim aprox 15mins. I would stay here again.

Room Tip: Ask for the park side.

A nice hotel with a superb location close to the city center and the Guggenheim Museum. There is a big shopping center next door for the rainy day and one of Bilbao's best restaurants, Extanobe, is 5 minutes walk away.

We enjoyed our stay at the hotel very much. Rather disconcerted when we arrived to be given a room with two single beds when we had booked a "deluxe double" through lastminute.com! They tried to explain this away by saying that a double room included two rather uncomfortable single beds, but they relented eventually. It just created a frisson of annoyance upon arrival that could easily have been avoided. Moreover, they said that they had no other rooms available but the story changed when I started to phone Last minute and mentioned Trip Advisor! Leaving that aside the room was ok except that there was no kettle and tea/coffee making facilities. Also, there was no proper curtain - just a blind - which meant that you got woken up quite early by the light coming into the room. The food in the restuarant was great if somewhat overpriced. We went out for tapas in the old town for the second night and it was equally as good for about 1/6 of the price! The massage/spa facility was good, but we got charged 10 euros more than was advertised, which was a bit cheeky.

Regarding breakfast, why oh why do they not have proper bacon and there was a shortage of fried eggs. The coffee was a bit grim and slow to arrive. What a great City though!

My family of four stayed in a family room at the hotel for two nights during the Asta Nagusia festival in August and had a great time.

When we arrived, Reception staff were thankfully happy to converse in English and went to great lengths to explain the area, things to see, places to visit, how to get there etc. It really set us up well to spend the short time we were in the City in the right way. It is in walking distance of the Gugenheim and most other attractions in the City.

The room was spacious and well furnished. We ate in the hotel and the restaurant was very good, if a little pricy. The kids loved the pool on one of the upper floors which was effectively outdoors but with a great view.

We liked Bilbao and would definitely stay at the Melia if we came back.

We stayed 2 nights here prior to driving across Spain to Malaga. I had booked it via a booking agency (Prestigia) as their price was significantly less than the price shown on the Melia group website. We had a room only deal, and had a very pleasant standard room overlooking the street towards the Mall. The hotel is about 10 minutes from the Guggenheim, and 5 minutes on the tram from the Bilbao's attractive Old Town. We took a taxi from the airport to the hotel and got stung for 32 euros - v expensive for a 15 minute journey on a quiet Sunday afternoon.

We ate in the hotel's Quatre restaurant one night and had a very pleasant meal at a reasonable price. We decided not to take the hotel's expensive breakfast offer. Instead we turned right out of the hotel entrance, walked 80 metres up the road to the Towers cafe/bar, who do a breakfast of coffee, fresh orange juice and toast for a reasonable 4.5 euros. This also has the added benefit of outside, covered seating, so you can sit and watch the world go by.

All of the hotel staff we encountered were very friendly and helpful, and all of them spoke excellent English.

Stayed at the end of September prior to boarding a cruise ship from Bilbao to Valencia, with 5 stops along the way. Suberb location, reasonable price, Buffet breakfast, well stocked. Walking distance to Gugenheim Museum and Bilbao main streets, Americanized Mall, close by.

Room Tip: Friendly staff at check-in

In our recent two week trip around Spain this was the only 5 Star hotel we visited but, although swish, it wasn't the one I enjoyed the most.

We took the train from San Sebastian and the cab to the hotel from the station was 7 Euros. The location is fantastic, right on the river and a stone's throw from the Guggenheim Museum. The hotel is a large red box and is easy to find no matter how enjoyable your evening has been!

The receptionists were fine - elegantly tailored and super models all. They weren't stand offish but all business with formalities like putting your bill in an envelope a touch excessive.

We were in Room 827 on the eighth floor. This isn't a location if you don't like heights as the glass fronted elevator whooshes you up in seconds. The room was lovely with the biggest bed I've been in. There is no balcony but it has electronic privacy and black out blinds as well as a small window if you need a breeze. Our room faced front and had a great river view - something to insist on when booking.

The hotel was first class all the way with a robe (only one!) and nice toiletries provided. A minor gripe was the lack of a fridge as the expensive mini bar was electronic and not of mind to let you stuff your own purchases in. The TV was medium sized and had a few English channels including Eurosport and the ubiquitious BBC World. They do provide free wi-fi although we were lucky to get much of a connection.

One of the nicer features was an open air pool which although small was a pleasant distraction. It would bet a bit crowded but happily when we went we had it to ourselves. There is also a small gym with towels provided.

We didn't breakfast here as the extra 32 Euro for this seemed steep - there is a McDonalds right accross the road if you want to save a cent or two.

The hotel bar was nice too with beers a reasonable 3 Euros and Jim Beam on the rocks a pricey 9 Euros.

The staff were all very polite and formal and the place had the air of a business rather than a family or tourist hotel. The Athletico Madrid football team were there when we were so it seems to attract all sorts!

This was an impressive and modern hotel with all mod cons - a bit more character and maybe better lobby paintings would earn it that extra star from me!

Room Tip: A river view is a must.
