“Bilbao was a Surprise”
Reviewed 2 May 2014

I recently stayed at the Melia Bilbao with a large group and was surprised by the hotel's cosmopolitan feel. My room was spacious with a view over the river and the bathroom was large as well. The staff were always helpful and pleasant. The restaurants also have a view over the large park at the back of the hotel and it was a pleasure to sit every morning and watch every man and his dog, literally, walking and exercising in the park. Breakfast catered for every possible nationality with many varieties of food. My only complaint is the cafe food. It could definitely be improved.

This is close to the Guggenheim Museum, a must see in Bilbao. Many restaurants close by and a lovely walk over any bridge by the river. I wish I could have stayed longer.

Stupendous views from our room on 9th floor, spacious bathroom and really comfy beds. However, reception seriously undermanned so delay on booking in and sadly the room needed some tlc. The electric blind was ripped and the shower enclosure needed the sealant replacing. If they could sort those issues out, the location is excellent for central Bilbao and they could justify the 5 Star rating.

The hotel itself is really beautiful with a well thought architecture and some nice pieces of art. Room was absolutely great (we slept on the 10th floor).
Location is ideal: a short walk to the Guggenheim or to the inner city. Also the location of the Tramway is very close to the hotel. We would recommend this hotel for a short visit to Bilbao.

We stayed at the Melia Bilbao during Easter weekend. It cost us 25 euro's for a taxi from the airport. The hotel was very modern, check in was efficient, staff were really helpful and friendly and we were soon on the glass lifts zooming up to our room on the 5th floor. Our room had great views over the park & was huge. It had a lovely gold marble bathroom with big bath and separate rain shower. Shampoo, conditioner, body lotion & bath gel were provided along with soap & plush towels & one bathrobe.
The room had a small mini bar but it was the type that has automatic sensors so you can't store your own drinks in it. Tip: there is an ice machine on the 6th floor & I had taken an 'ice bag' cooler so I bought wine & coke from the supermarket opposite & used the ice to cool my own! The supermarket opposite is in the basement of the Zubiarte shopping mall. This was a really good shopping centre with all the popular shops, McDonald's and Burger King also a few restaurants.
The location of the Melia was excellent for us as we like to walk. It took about 6 minutes to get to the Guggenheim walking along the river & about 25 minutes nice stroll to the old town.
We didn't use any of the bars in the hotel as we loved the Pinxtos bars so much and they were one of the main reasons we went to Bilbao in the first place. On our last day we had the Executive lunch in the Quarter restaurant in the hotel. It was 19 euro's for 3 courses including a glass of wine or beer and was really lovely. We caught the bus back to the Airport which was 8 minutes walk away. We had directions from the excellent tourist office outside the Guggenheim. We paid 1.35 euro's each & went directly to the airport. Other people we met said it cost £35 euro's for a return taxi! We would definitely stay at the Melia Bilbao again as it ticked all the boxes for us.

Everything about the hotel was very good from check-in to departure. Reception staff were competent and polite. Room was large, contemporary and so quiet. We liked the electric blinds and shutters, the large comfy bed and well-equipped bathroom. The breakfast area was relaxing and had lovely views. Only negative was a rushed Sunday morning breakfast experience when cereal bowls were replaced by large inappropriate bowls. We did ask for others but this request was not met, didn't spoil our overall views of the hotel though. Would certainly return when next at Guggenheim

Room Tip: all rooms would be of a high standard, I imagine

Most has already been said. The Melia Bilbao is well located and offers quiet, well-equipped rooms, an excellent breakfast buffet and nice rooftop pool and gym facilities. We had a very comfortable 3 night stay. Disappointing features were the internet connection which was a great source of irritation and the lack of any personal touch. In our experience the reception staff were helpful but not particularly warm. Overall we found this hotel to be good value for money - don't skimp on the breakfast, it is well worth the price! With a park right behind this is also a nice relaxing location in summer we imagine.

We had booked a city trip to Bilbao and stayed 3 nights
Good location, close to the river, a good 5 minute walk from the Guggenheim and about 20 minutes walking from the Old Town. Tram stations nearby, and bus/metro stations within walking distance. A very quiet neighbourhood, I cannot imagine any room having noise from traffic.
Excellent service, even though, as others have remarked, there is no assistance outside for luggage, and no concierge.
Great rooms, spacious and clean. Large bathroom for European cities standards. Very comfortable beds. Very large windows, with a view (park or river), with electrical shades operated from the bedside (it took us a while to find the buttons though ...). Turndown service, except on Sunday nights (it was Easter, so maybe ...). Well equipped gym.
Excellent breakfast.
All by all a very good hotel. Personally, I would rate it as a high-end 4-star.
