“Impressive Architecture”
Reviewed 22 June 2012

The Church of San Nicolas is located at Plazuela San Nicolás, 1. It was built in 1743 by the architect Ignacio Ibero y Erkizia and inaugurated in 1756. The district where is found is called El Arenal. The church was built in honor of San Nicolas de Bari, the patron saint of sailors. The church has a moderately Baroque style. The floor plan is the Greek cross. It is covered with a cupola. Its octagonal interior boasts five magnificent altarpieces and sculptures by Juan Pascual de Mena, the best sculptor at that time. The corners of the church are occupied by chapels and the sacristy. The façade has the principal entrance and one tower on each side, resembling the Cathedral of Mexico city. The façade is a bit plain, but this was the Baroque style in Vizcaya.
