Description: Zortziko restaurant, just a few steps from Bilbao's iconic Guggenheim Museum, is iconic in its own way. This ultra-modern kitchen is sited in an elegant, 19th century mansion and is the place for business lunches and relaxed dinners. The formality of the setting the three dining rooms are decorated in royal French, Victorian English and a more modern style is deflated by the helpfulness and cordiality of the DJed waitstaff. Chef/owner Daniel Garcia has earned his Michelin star through refinement of flavours in a truly Basque style at once inventive and conservative. Dishes change with the season, of course, and may include dishes like starter of txangurro salad, containing crabmeat on thin spaghetti with coral dressing, main course of blue duck slow-cooked served with a sweet rioja sauce, and a tasting plate of desserts to satisfy even the most adventurous gourmet. A single table in the wine cellar, the home of more than 600 labels, is reserved weeks in advance. Celebrity-magnet Zortziko (Frank Gehry, Pierce Brosnan) is one of Bilbao's culinary star attractions.

I took my wife here for her birthday a few days ago. We had the tasting menu, and for a short while had the entire dining room to ourselves. Things started out well, but quickly fell apart as more patrons arrived. We were frequently out of wine and water in our glasses, and the pacing of the meal was painfully slow. It took upwards of 15 minutes between some courses, and overall it took 3.5 hours to complete their tasting menu.

We had to ask for the bill, and then still wait an additional 10 minutes before it was produced. The food was of the quality that I expect from a restaurant of this caliber, but the lack of service / slow service left me with a very sour taste. Service is what you are paying for at Michelin starred restaurants, and I do not feel that Zortziko delivered.

Announced as the best restaurant in Bilbao - and for sure, there is "a lot to do" about nothing really. The staff was friendly, but that was about it ... Atmosphere very dated / obsolete / no taste ... but that could be forgiven if the food was great. However, things started off with an amuse that was nothing but a fried anshovy between 2 slices of very fatty bread (lukewarm) -- that is a way to fill ones stomach ... appetizers one OK / one very meager -- main course (2x fish) was basically the fish fried and that was it ... sure, as the menu says, "to appreciate the true taste of the products" but this was below everything - nothing creative, nothing added to make it special...Price however was high and that makes the price / quality ratio completely wrong. If you want to pay a lot for something really really simple - go for it, if you expect gastronomy stay away

The fish dish was particularly impressed by simple presentation while maintaining the harmonic combination of taste of each ingredients used. Server were kind enough to explain in english in details through the whole meal.

The highlight has to be reasonably priced wine of vega sicilia unico . Great wine that really brightens up the dinning experience.

Only doubt is why the chef advertised is not around ?Shouldn't the paying guests be informed if the main chef is not present . And the restaurant should make it clear who ,instead, is in the kitchen! Otherwise it can be seen as dishonest !

We have good food every where in the north but this is more like the Michelin restaurants in the Netherlands. The interior is classic with a modern touch. The apples at he tables will stay all week because nobody needs one after having the tasting menu Lehengaia. Fortunately the friendly staff also speaks English and we got the menu written to take home, nice gesture. Everything of the tasting menu is excellent but the foi cup and the king prawns where our favorites.

On the plus side, this was one of the few restaurants open on Tuesday. After that it goes downhill. The place lacks atmosphere. it is rather too formal without an ambience. The wine waiter made the same mistake 3 times -- failing to give wine to the taster after serving the rest of the table. Even for meat-eaters the steak was tough and rather a large proportion of meat was left on 5 plates. Service was also poor at the end of the meal. After asking 3 times for the bill, it was only forthcoming when we started to leave the restaurant. An experience not to be repeated.
