“lovely hotel, very central”
Reviewed 4 September 2011

This was our second stay(August) at the Maria Cristina and would recommend to anyone who want to visit San Sebastian (Donastia), Spain. The hotel is located on the river very near the new convention centre and only a block or 2 from the old town. Our room was facing the river and very comfortable with a small Juliet balcony and fresh air.
The staff an extremely helpful and friendly and the Concierge, Gloria, was only too happy to help us organise a day trip to the nearby coastal towns, and Txakoli Vineyard.
We ate one meal at the Restaurant Saigon where we had eaten on our last visit and found it to be a delicious Asian experience.
Our arrival in August, coincided with the week long celebration of the city, so we were privileged to see fireworks each night, Giants (huge puppet like figures) parading around the streets, music and street theatre on every corner. This plus the usual pintxos (tapas) in every bar made it a very lively time. We were glad to have the haven of the quiet Maria Cristina to retreat to.
I would recommend this hotel and hope to come back to stay many more times.

The hotel is well located, an easy walk to the old town and many of San Sebastien's great restaurants and tapas bars. We had a nice river view. Our room was spacious, lovely, and comfortable. Dinner in their elegant restaurant disappointed; don't bother except for the wonderful buffet breakfast. Charge for wi-fi but computers in the lobby are available for guests to use free of charge.

This is a grand old lady much in the style of the railway hotels in Canada built by the CPR and the CNR. She need some botox and other invigoration.

Excellent staff, excellent public areas. Food is silly expensive and nothing special.

Had I not been on points a firm letter of complaint would be in order. The room, an upgrade, was damp and smelled moldy. The carpet and the bed sheets were damp. The shower would not drain. The bath room was very dark. The light switchs were odd...futuristic in a 1950's sort of way...mind you the furnishings were in very good shape given the obvious age and very much fit with the old lady decorum of the hotel..as it should be.

I look forward to returning here when it is fixed up. With the current staff and an update to her innards, the old lady will be grand once again I am su...till then...give her a wide berth.

How they can charge those prices for this pre reno hotel is beyond me.

Dear Mr. Edmonton Canadá,

Thank you for taking the time to right your valuable comments on trip advisor.

As you already know we are undergoing a major renovation from mid October onwards. We are profoundly sorry that the hotel did meet your expectations especially with the feeling of damp atmosphere in the room. We will check what have happened and review all rooms and make sure no such damp ambient feeling would remain.

As far as our room service menu is concerned we are aligned on the mid range of average prices of our competition. We are sorry you that you found them quiet high.

I want to take the opportunity as well to thank you for your very positive comments on our team that as you mentioned, were “excellent” throughout your stay.

Thank you and please do not hesitate to get in touch with us directly should you need to experience us again next year after the renovation.

With my best regards,

Michel Nader

Another superb Starwood property in Spain. Nice, comfortable room with neat view of river and Bay. Surrounded by amazing restaurants. Good location between old town and city center. easy to walk everywhere. Service was great. Concierge did top job with getting dinner reservations at some of the world's great restaurants.

The good: This is a beautiful, old-world hotel that physically retains a strong sense of what it would have been like to stay there a century ago. The location could not be better, with beautiful views of the ocean and the Kursall and just a short walk from really anywhere in town you would want to go. The room was enormous, extremely well-appointed, and we were very pleased being able to open our balcony doors and enjoy the fresh air. We adored San Sebastian, and would highly recommend visiting Martín Berasategui while you are there - truly one of the most glorious meals of my life.

The bad: The clientele. If you are looking for an understated, adult atmosphere - keep looking. The hotel appeared fully stocked with entitled, loud Americans (the kind who talk slowly and louder in lieu of Spanish or Basque) lugging their embittered children for the length of our stay. These hordes of naughty children and slack-jawed adolescents were a real downer and made us avoid the hotel common areas. In fact, at one point my travel companion was spit on (yes, spit on) from an above staircase landing by one of these monsters.

I guess if I had a bunch of children that I had to bring to San Sebastian, this would be the place for me. But as this is not the case, I would look elsewhere for a more sophisticated environment with like-minded travelers (Villa Soro comes recommended by friends who recently honeymooned there). Obviously, the hotel cannot be held liable for the clientele and I'm sure things are different at other times during the year. However, this is precisely the information I wish I had prior to dropping a load of cash at this place - it is exceedingly expensive.
