“Excellent location, good service”
Reviewed 19 October 2012 via mobile

We stayed in a junior suite overlooking river. Spacious room. Only criticism is bathroom quite small for suite. Also felt breakfast buffet was not quite to 5 star hotel service. No spa and hotel dining quite limited. However great location, beautiful hotel, helpful staff, good service overall. Would not stay anywhere else in San Sebastian.

Our amazing visit to San Sebastian was especially great because of this hotel. The kind doormen and staff greeted us whenever we were coming and going and provided us with umbrellas on our rainy day. The location was perfect, architecture of the building was grand and the interior design was stunning.

We were unable to cash in our SPG Platinum request for a suite upgrade, but our room was still exceptional. I also enjoyed the perfect European breakfast in one of the ballroom/restaurant. You will feel like a king and queen.

Room Tip: All the rooms are great. We had a deluxe room (not a suite) and it was great!

This is a charming and beautiful hotel with lovely, well proportioned rooms and good staff. Concierge called Gloria (I think) was particularly good and helpful. Bed was huge and very comfortable, with lovely linen and the bathroom a good size. Room service was very prompt and efficient. Location is right on the river looking towards the sea. We were in a room to the side which had a reasonable view of the river and mountains. Despite being next to the main road the double glazing meant it was quiet. There are a few minor niggles however that mean it just falls short from being perfect. These are all very picky comments but if you're paying 5* prices you expect a certain standard especially from an international group like Starwood who own this hotel. As with previous reviewer the noise from other rooms can be heard - not badly but disappointing. On our last day there was a lot of audible banging and then drilling from the adjacent building. The staff reacted quickly and we received a note and small gift of fruit from the manager within a couple of hours and the offer to move rooms - as we were leaving that day. The work was taking place in the building next door so out of the hotel's control and they did their best. Breakfast is a very standard offer but very expensive if not included in your booking and frankly not worth it. The shower screen in the bathroom needs to be about a foot longer to stop the excellent rose head shower soaking the floor every time you use it. There were also a few minor inconsistencies in the housekeeping and turn down, for example we got different selection of towel sizes and quantity each day. Having said all that it really is a lovely hotel with pleasant soothing decor and has been refurbished wonderfully well with an excellent eye.

There is no doubting the beauty of this building and the excellent job that has been done in renovating it in style. The location is pretty much perfect, the staff very obliging and the rooms extremely comfortable and the amenities customer friendly.
Just a couple of inconsistencies. The noise transmission though tolerable is disappointing. We could hear every persons shower/bath through the pipes and doors closing in the corridors at all times of the day and night. Whether this can be fixed is another matter - it is an old building and some cope better than others.Housekeeping could do with a little more attention - particularly to the surfaces.

Room Tip: There seem to be a variety of sizes for the bedrooms - ask what size your room is going to be when y...

We began our 22 day vacation through Spain and France at this hotel. Stepping out of the taxi and into this beautiful hotel was a wonderful first experience in Spain. As SPG platinum members, we used some reward cert's to upgrade to a suite and it was exceptional. Our room had a corner terrace that looked out over the river to the sea. The beds and linens were heaven for my jet lagged body, and the bathroom was huge with great toiletries. The staff were truly outstanding, in particular the lovely young ladies at the concierge desk who were extremely thorough and helpful! The location is also perfect for walking to the beach promenade or old town for the amazing pintxos. San Sebastian is truly a magical place, and we can only hope to return some day soon.

Hotel open less than a month ago, after renovations. Location cannot be beat if you are going to the conference center or just like old town.

Rooms are very comfortable with nice linen, and bathroom furnishings. Quiet and efficient, but with a luxury feel that's missing from other modern hotels. The staff is still coming up to speed on the details of the WIFI.

I particularly liked the open area with computer terminals and books on art and gastronomy.

Were here for the gastronomy festival at the conference center, so didn't test their cuisine.

We stayed at Hotel Maria Cristina for 5 nights at the start of our trip to Spain. It was the perfect place to recover from the jet lag of a long flight. We were welcomed to our room with champagne and chocolates which was a great start to the trip. The rooms were spacious and beautifully decorated. The bed was ridiculously comfortable (the perfect place to recover from jet lag!). The bathroom was a spa in itself with great amenities that were replenished daily. Our room had a private patio with loungers and cushions overlooking the beach. The gym was open 24 hours (again great if you're jet-lagged) with all new equipment. The staff were friendly and helpful. One day we borrowed the umbrella from our room and forgot it a restaurant. Planning to go back and get it the next day we asked the concierge to call and ask the restaurant to put it aside for us, only to be told not to worry about it and that it would be taken care of. I'm not usually a fan of turn down service, but it was nice to come back after tapas tasting to find the room nicely tidied up with chocolates and the next day's weather forecast waiting on your pillow. They also provide a wide selection of newspapers to choose from which they then print off and deliver to your room. The only negative I can think of is the driveway was not very clearly marked as we weren't entirely sure where to pull in and had to circle to block before figuring it it, not a big deal though. Overall an amazing hotel that we would love to stay at again.
