“One of the best hotels I have ever stayed in!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 May 2014 via mobile

This stunning hotel is in a fantastic location and is almost completely faultless. The rooms were amazing, the bed is the biggest I have ever seen and the ample breakfast buffet was a great way to start the day. The only drawback was that one evening there were people (children I think) running up and down the hallway into the room next to ours and slamming doors. This was quite late at night and it was loud even from in our bedroom which made it hard to sleep. This wasn't the hotels fault though and overall we found our stay well worth the expense and I would happily recommend this hotel to anyone staying in San Sebastián.

Dear Nicole G,

Thank you very much for your nice words and for taking the time to let us know your impression about our property. It is really satisfying to know that we reached your expectations especially with our breakfast buffet and our large beds.

Regarding the noise, we are really sorry to learn that you had some difficulties with sleeping due to the running of people next to your door. We usually try to maintain the atmosphere quiet and relaxed thanks also to our Security Staff but unfortunately sometimes it is impossible to remain this calm ambience. Anyhow we are more than pleased to be informed about this inconvenience in order to try to avoid this drawback next time.

Looking forward to welcome you again in our property

Best regards,

All the little things that define a luxury hotel and distinguish it from the merely good are present. Spacious rooms, proper clotheshangers and ample space for luggage, the little delay before the lights go out when you remove the keycard, separate shower stall, perfect location, friendly and English-speaking staff, complimentary wifi, complimentary umbrellas (it often rains for a short while in San Sebastian) - the list goes on. Warmly recommended - as is the city itself.

I really, really wanted to be able to give this beautiful 5-start hotel 5 stars, but some issues prevented that.

Pros: Service (attentive concierges, great check-in and check out), wonderful amenities, beautifully designed interiors, room appointments, excellent location (3 blocks to old town with great bars and restaurants, 2 blocks to Kursaal bridge/conference center, tour bus in back of hotel, 5 blocks to waterfront/beach; 4 -5 blocks to downtown shopping). Room service good and prompt (although portions were a little small).

Cons: 1) The worse thing in any hotel, especially a so-called 5-star, is crud in the bathtub. Don't know if it was mold or just ground-in brown dirt (see photo)in one corner of the tub, but it was yucky.

2) although a beautifully appointed bathroom with high-end fixtures, the mechanics of the glass shower door weren't too functional. It only covered 2/3 of the length of the tub. The first 1/3 was fixed/immovable; the 2nd part was movable, allowing it to swing open to climb into a high tub (if you have short legs). If you also have short arms, the facets are hard to reach if you're outside the tub trying to reach around the fixed glass portion of the door to turn the facets on. [Maybe that's why the crud-covered, far corner of the tub was so difficult to clean…….too hard to access, although I noticed that the sweet cleaning person tried to scrub it out, unsuccessfully.]

3) also in this beautiful bathroom, the grab bars are inside the shower, which is fine; but getting out of the shower (if you're short) could be an accident waiting to happen, because there's nothing to grab on to as you're trying to climb over the higher tub. You either have to hang onto the movable glass door (and pray it doesn't move), or prop open the regular door to balance yourself.

4) the pillows smelled a little old (from an old duck?); but were happily replaced with foam pillows.

Overall, I would return and stay in this beautiful hotel again, but would check out the bathroom before accepting a room. Sorry I can't give you 5 stars.

This hotel truly met my expectations. The interiors were clean and fresh and the lounge in particular was very inviting. The book collection was also impressive. Also the room sizes were incredible!

However, the standard of food was not outstanding when considering that San Sebastian prides itself on it's food. At times, the hotel was only short of staff to deal with the requests of those staying. Finally, the concierge were unable to pull strings, (getting last minute reservations) which was surprising as it is a 5* hotel.

When putting this into perspective I think that this hotel was one of the best in San Sebastian, However on an international scale, I do not think this would be my first choice!

This is by far the best hotel I visited this year. This property, recently completely renovated offers the highest standard of comfort, very elegantly designed, I loved the new mood!
My room (416) spacious, with a beautiful bathroom offers a great view on the city and the sea.
Breakfast buffet is a delight and the gym facilities are perfect to sweet off the excess calories accumulated in those wonderful eateries the city has to offer.
Last you can trust Raoul the hotel's concierge for his best advises on where to get the best meals
in town.
Definitely I shall come back!

Located near the old section of SanSebastian, near the river and a walking distance to the
La Concha beach.Great luxury, huge rooms, great beds.Huge lobby, salons, etc.
A five star hotel! Even more luxurious than the Excelsior in Rome. Our room even has a
fireplace and it is not even a suite.Very convinient to the old city wher you will find
lots of Pintxos bars with great food.Service is excellent. Concierge service excellent.
This is one of the most luxurious hotels I have ever stayed.

Room Tip: Any room is great. They all have a french balcony. They all have great beds, bathroms, etc.

san sebastian isn't on most spanish itineraries, but it's a gem of a city up north in basque country, close to the french border. you can't go wrong staying the hotel maria cristina, another century-old grande dame, but completely modernized. the rooms and bathrooms are spacious and very comfortable, and the free wifi throughout the hotel is a gracious bonus. the view of the urumea river and the gros district across it is spectacular; our room had a small balcony. no coffeemaker, no ironing board. very courteous and friendly staff. the best tapas or "pintxos" bars in the old quarter are just about 10-15 minutes' walk from the hotel.

Room Tip: get a room with a balcony facing the river--stunning view!
