“The Complete Experience”
Reviewed 8 June 2014

As has been said by most reviewers before me this hotel has been beautifully restored to the point it exudes an elegance reminiscent of a bygone age. It would be hard to imagine a renovation more thoroughly and successfully executed and from what we experienced during our stay, staffing was up to the same standard of excellence.

In our experience the commons areas of most old elegant European hotels are small with narrow hallways, small rooms etc. This is usually due to restrictions placed by local authorities on renovating historic structures. Not here. From the extra wide hallways and seating areas, to the large guest rooms and baths, to the magnificently decorated and visually stunning public areas this hotel sets the perfect atmosphere to thoroughly enjoy all San Sebastian has to offer, which is considerable.

Our restaurant dining experience was very enjoyable especially the breakfast offerings which contained something for every dietary need. Our only complaint, not the fault of the hotel, were the early morning revelers who turned the courtyard beneath our open windowed balcony into an after hours debate session.

As for the city the one suggestion I would make is be sure to walk up Monte Urgull, about 15 minutes from the hotel by foot. It's an easy walk up for most folks and you will be rewarded with the benefit of exercise while taking in incredible views back down to the city and out to sea and a pleasant exploration of the old fortress structure.

Room Tip: If you like to sleep with the window open, and the late night street crowd cooperates, ask for a roo...

We spent two nights at this historic hotel in June 2014 ... hotel as other reviews have noted was fully restored in 2012. It was a great restoration preserving why this must have been one of the finest European hotels a century ago.

My wife, and 8 year old daughter, and I had a "family" room which was easily 800 square feet. Comfortable sitting area in addition to a large king bed and separate small bed for my daughter. Bathroom was huge and easily well appointed as a Ritz or a St. Regis property.

Staff was helpful - concierge picked good dining options since the Michelin star joints were closed Monday and Tuesday night.

Breakfast was pleasant and the best we had during our European trip but still a bit lower compared to Asian breakfast buffets at fine hotels.

Highly recommend staying here if you are looking for an elegant experience.

Top class hotel which exceeded expectations in every aspect. Have had the pleasure of staying in many iconic hotels all over the world (Peninsula in Hong Kong, Negresco in Nice, to name a couple), Maria Cristina is up there with the best of them.
Only slight disappointment for us were the pintxos bars in the old town (we went by the recommendations on the map given to us on arrival at the hotel). The majority of them were full of tourists (all using the same map!), over priced, and mediocre in terms of quality. Having just spent a few wonderful days in Galicia where the food was exceptional, we felt a little underwhelmed overall.
This is by no means a criticism of the hotel which we would without question recommend to anyone looking for somewhere extra special to stay.

This hotel is an amazing celebration of splendor and luxury. Every detail, every design aspect, every element, are unique displays of tasteful beauty. Perhaps the best hotel I ever had a chance to stay in, this experience has been flawless. Rarely an architectural jewel of this age has been so well kept, but this one is very special. The Maria Cristina is phenomenal. Very attentive service and great location too, within walking distance of the Pintxo stroll to submerge into the local gastronomic culture. An unforgettable experience!!!!

This is a beautiful hotel with great location. The service was excellent everywhere except late night at the bar understaffed. One of the best places we've ever stayed. Can't wait to go back. Didn't try the restaurant so can't speak to that. Street names have changed. Easier to search Donostia in gps gadgets.

What a wonderful way to end my 3 week trip to Spain. Hotel Maria Cristina was a dream come true, one of the finest hotels I have had the pleasure of staying at in my life. The service was out of this world, the rooms were very nice, the bed was so comfortable I had trouble getting out of them each morning! The hotel is in an excellent location and you can easily walk to the old part of the city for the best food in this world, or either of the two main beaches including La Concha (one of the prettiest beaches I have ever seen). I also had quite a bit of room service on the trip and all the meals were delicious except the 4 cheese pizza which was really awful. I would beg the hotel to reconsider its pizza recipe as it could use a major improvement. But that was my only complaint, the rest of my trip was superb. Although its a not cheap hotel, I think the price is warranted and would certainly stay again on my next trip to Donostia.

This stunning hotel is in a fantastic location and is almost completely faultless. The rooms were amazing, the bed is the biggest I have ever seen and the ample breakfast buffet was a great way to start the day. The only drawback was that one evening there were people (children I think) running up and down the hallway into the room next to ours and slamming doors. This was quite late at night and it was loud even from in our bedroom which made it hard to sleep. This wasn't the hotels fault though and overall we found our stay well worth the expense and I would happily recommend this hotel to anyone staying in San Sebastián.

Dear Nicole G,

Thank you very much for your nice words and for taking the time to let us know your impression about our property. It is really satisfying to know that we reached your expectations especially with our breakfast buffet and our large beds.

Regarding the noise, we are really sorry to learn that you had some difficulties with sleeping due to the running of people next to your door. We usually try to maintain the atmosphere quiet and relaxed thanks also to our Security Staff but unfortunately sometimes it is impossible to remain this calm ambience. Anyhow we are more than pleased to be informed about this inconvenience in order to try to avoid this drawback next time.

Looking forward to welcome you again in our property

Best regards,
