“spacious and clean, location is not great”
Reviewed 25 September 2013

pros: clean room, spacious (compared to other spain hotels we stayed at this trip), safe and great free breakfast. cons: noisy (we were on one of the top floors and could still hear traffic from the street), wireless reception is spotty at best, but at least it's free; location is not ideal -- most of the things i wanted to do were in the old town and this is about a 20 minute walk from there.

We have stayed here a few times before. The Hotel rooms are really comfortable with good bedding lovely clean crisp. This time the toiletries were not the same and the bathroom needed a little bit of renovation. but still good, the room was cleaned daily but on one day things were not the usual standard. we were on the 9th floor and it was no problem. A lovely walk along the river and your into the centre which is vibrant and fun. the Park Maria Christiana is well worth a walk through plenty to see. The sea food is fantastic I think San Sebastian is a little expensive to eat but the food is always fresh. and great quality. 3 lovely beaches. the weather can be variable always carry a brolly. it is certainly a place you should visit.

Room Tip: All rooms are good some traffic noise but close the windows

Just got back from the Silken Amara on Friday 20th after an overnight in Bilbao. The bus takes 1hr from Bilbao and the bus station is at the side of the hotel. The bus station being so close to the hotel is sometimes a bad thing but not on this occasion it just made travelling very easy. The hotel is very modern and clean and lives up to it's 4* rating with excellent rooms. We were on the 7th floor and traffic noise can be a bit of a problem but that was because we like to have the window open. Close it and no problem.
I'm sure you could walk to the old town in approx. 15 mins but we preferred to take the bus. Get the no 26 or 28 across the bus station on the main road and get off at the terminal on Almeda del Boulevard, cost €1.60 each. Taxi for same journey €7.00.
The bars in the old town are numerous and full of a stunning range of Pintxos. Prices vary between €1.50 and €2.00 each whereas in Bilbao they were €1.00 each. The range and quality in the Zeruko bar was beyond belief and far superior to many other fantastic displays (lots of Pintxos award plaques on the wall). One last point most bars close up at 11pm we caught what I think was a final no 28 bus at 11.10pm

This was a secret deal through Hotwire, and though not my own choice, the hotel lived up to previous positive reviews. Not the friendliest of reception staff, but the room was a good size with all the usual mod. cons. Being located back from the main road, with good window insulation and high quality bed linen, made for 3 good nights sleep. Rain on the last evening forced us to eat in the hotel restaurant, and although it lacked atmosphere, the food itself was of a high standard. At €22 each, including a glass of wine, for the set menu, it also was great value for money. Don't be put off by the location, San Sebastian is a beautiful city to walk around.

The Silken Amara made a great base while in San Sebastian. Don't be persuaded by reviews saying it's out of the action. The neighborhood is really nice and it's only about a ten minute walk to the heart of the city. The hotel was stylish and the room was definitely comfortable.

San Sebastian itself was amazing. Go during their "Big Week" celebration. The place was just so alive. It was incredible.

Clean modern hotel right alongside the bus terminus, makes an ideal base, always has taxis available and close to the rail stations. A short bus ride into the old town costs 1.60 euros with a frequent bus service. The rooms are a good size and well equiped. We didn't try the breakfast but chose to walk down the main street leading to Bilbao to a small coffee shop, part of the Otaegui family run chain, which is on the opposite side of the road it served excellent coffee, teas, freshly squeezed orange juice and pastries to die for. All at reasonable prices. The staff don't speak any english but give you a warm welcome and are very helpful.

As we couldnt book an hotel in the centre of town we booked the amara, knowing it was a good 20 min walk to town. Not a problem as a nice walk through busy interesting streets. Taxi to centre at night was aout €6 so not an issue. Clean large rooms, friendly staff and snacks and breakfast good downstairs. Hotel is above a car park with parking for the hotel guests so easy so park up your car. Would recommend hotel...does the job
