“Good room, excellent dinner, breakfast too expensive”
Reviewed 25 August 2014

Location of this hotel is very good if you are coming by car or bus as it is next to the bus station and has a good underground car park (€18 per night). It is a modern 4 star with no surprises. It is a bit of a walk to the city centre - about 20 minutes - so you can't easily pop back to your room. For this reason we decided to eat in their restaurant in the evening and the food was very good. We chose the menu at €23 which consisted of a very good 3 course meal with wine and water included. You don't get the atmosphere of the city centre of course but the food, service and price were all very good. Breakfast was not included in our rate, so rather than spend €18 each, we went to a modern film-star themed cafe over the road and had the best croissants ever, freshly squeezed orange juice and cafe con leche for just €3 each.

Thought this was a very nice, clean, fresh hotel, well worth 4 stars, which you can't always say in Spain. Rooms were clean and modern, food was good, and wifi was free. The location is a ten minute walk from the town centre/beach area, but it's a pleasant walk along the river bank, past some nice, elegant houses. Indeed all of the central part of town seemed very clean and elegant, and the beach is legendary.

Stayed 3 nights. Lovely hotel right beside bus station which suited because we were travelling by bus but a bit far out from the Old Town - about 20-25 mins walk. Very clean & modern but the room in which we stayed wasn't very roomy. Very little space between bed and table. Had breakfast (which was very nice - fresh fruit, smoked salmon, bacon, eggs, sausages, bread, tea, toast, coffee etc. and plenty of it). But boy was it expensive. €18 per person which is the most expensive I've come across! Don't think I'd stay again. Has a nice bar and restaurant and Reception staff were helpful enough.

We flew into Biarritz & got the bus to San Sebastián which dropped us right outside the hotel which was really handy! The walk into the old town took about 20 mins & you can get the 26 & 28 buses around the corner from the hotel which seem to go every 5 mins or so, so I thought the location was perfect. There are also some nice places for breakfast closeby.

The hotel is much more modern than the exterior implies. Rooms were nice and contemporary, comfy bed, blackout blind (which we didn't discover for a couple of days!) was great, had a well stocked mini bar & bathroom was fine. Nice funky bar but not much atmosphere, and we didn't try the cafe.

On the negative side, the staff were not particularly friendly or welcoming and while the wifi was free it was absolutely terrible!

But we loved San Sebastián and got what we needed from the hotel.

My wife and I just stayed 5 nights at this hotel and were very, very satisfied. The location is wonderful...very close to convenient bus stops to go to the Old Town or the Catedral areas, which are two main points for dining or shopping. And if you want to take a day trip to Bilbao, it is right next to the bus station and the ticket office. Also, if you need to take a taxi, they are right next to the buses and always available. The staff is very helpful and exceedingly cordial and the room was large by European standards, very clean, and the cleaning staff very cooperative. This is a hotel that we will certainly stay at whenever we return to San Sebastian.

We arrived into San Sebastian/Donostia from Madrid just after noon, and found it took us about 20 minutes stroll along the river to get to Silken Amara Plaza. The external didn’t look inviting at all, but the small lobby reception was pleasant enough. Beyond the lobby is a bar, and after that is the cafeteria.

Check in was handled quickly, the reception spoke good English and we were handed 3 wifi chits, one for each device we were using. There are two elevators just to the right of the reception, before the entrance to the bar.

We were given a room on the 8th floor that looked out onto the bus depot, next to the hotel. The noise didn’t bother us with the window shut, but having it opened was another story, it was quite a busy place after all. Perhaps that is why there is only this single window, which is tiny in relation to the room itself. Interestingly, immediately upon entering the room, the door to the ensuite is to the right, and another door opens into the bedroom itself. The good size room had a king (seems so to me) bed, but the mattress probably should be replaced as it is not firm and one side is giving way. The usual large screen cable TV, desk + chair, plenty of closet space, mini bar, but no coffee/tea making facility was included. I called to ask for a kettle, but was told firmly that was not possible. The ensuite had a shower, toilet, bidet and hair dryer and in addition to shower gel, shampoo, body lotion, the amenities included disposable toothbrush and shaving kit.

The bad: a 4 star establishment should have better mattress for a bed. And cleanliness and maintenance is disappointing. The bedsheet had stains, the sink chipped, the ceiling opening to the aircon blower was ajar. The slow internet. And what? no tea/coffee? Worst still, no kettle!

The good: the location was great. Not so far from the old part/beach, etc. and transportation.

Will look for alternative next time around.

Room Tip: Room facing away from bus depot

We stayed twice at the Silken Amara Plaza in July, eight days total. We had a positive experience and would stay there again.

The property is fairly new and generally well maintained.

We loved the location, a nice neighborhood a 20-minute walk to the old quarter and next to the bus station, where you can catch a bus to Bilbao or Pamplona, which we did. I understand that some fellow travelers may not like to walk or may not like having buses next door.

All personnel with whom we interacted were friendly and helpful.

We had breakfast only one day, preferring to indulge on local pintxos. It cost EUR 18 and was in line with other hotels of the same category, not the best and not the worst. It had some local specialties that were quite good.

The room was quite comfortable, with a very decent bathroom, comfortable bed, and great bedding. Again, in line with other properties of the same category.

Our only restriction was the free internet. Speeds were nearly dial-up and so slow that most of the time we preferred to use our cell phone’s 3G network. I really don’t understand why so many decent hotels have poor internet connections in this day and age. If for some reason you need higher speeds, forget Amara Plaza.

Had it not been the internet, we would have awarded a five-start review to this hotel, which is otherwise great.
