A very large and interesting place. There are displays about ancient Basque history and culture leading up to modern day. The English language audio guide was a big help in getting full appreciation of what is offered. There was a great variety of material shown, not just a chorological history. A very interesting video concerning Basque culture and everyday life in small towns collected from in person interviews and pictures.

Thank Joe M

The Museum is housed in renovated 16th century convent, to which an ultra modern extension, built into the cliff face, has been added. It’s a great combination of the old and the new.

The displays show a chronological history of Basque society, from the Stone Age until the present day. They mix static displays of historical artifacts with excellent audio visual presentations. The audio guides are clear and informative.

The various historical phases are displayed in separate spaces, which are often interesting of themselves— there are no boring straight spaces, but instead there are angles, ramps, staircases and well placed windows, all adding to the charm.

We were particularly impressed by the fine arts display, with art ranging from the 15th to 20th centuries — there are many beautiful works, and in fact was one of the best small gallery collections we have seen.

The Museum is on the sea side of the old town, very easily accessible — highly recommended for a 1-2 hour visit.

The exhibition and the multi media presentation were amazing. We were very impressed. It’s a museum showing the essential moments and milestones in the formation and development of the Basque Country.

For Spanish speakers a great regional museum with some quality exhibits.
With an audio guide the museum experience was restricted - some descriptions were less than the translated sign boards and some areas had no audio.
The local section (first floor) was for us the most interesting - covering agriculture (look out for the 2-pronged forks that substituted for ploughs on steep terrain), the costumes and ship building. All beautifully laid out and plenty of space to manoeuvre a wheelchair.

Very helpful staff. I very much enjoyed my visit to this interesting and well presented museum. Worth paying a visit. The Tony Ray-Jones exhibition was great, loved to see those evocative photos of 60s Brighton etc. It was a good opportunity to see the Chillida and Oteiza works which we rarely see.

Thank Linda S
