“A nice hotel but lacks zeal.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 September 2013

The location is lovely, the hotel is functional and mainly clean. There are nice grounds and a swimming pool... I would say however that the atmosphere lacks a little something. Partly I think the staff do not help, if they smiled and were more friendly and engaged in making you feel welcome, that might help. As others have mentioned, it is also a little shaby and needs a good coat of paint to brighten it up.

I would say that if you like being out of the bustle of the city then this would be an ok choice, but there are many hotels that were of similar price which are better.

I think some of the reviews I've read are a little harsh although maybe that's because the hotel presents itself as 4* when perhaps 3* would be a fairer grade and perhaps also because San Sebastian is ridiculously expensive for hotels (it is after all just a little seaside town with a nice harbour and beach, not London) and so expectations are a little high.So if you book here ,think 3* and adjust the price by half(what you'd book this hotel for in most other places) and you'll have some idea of what to expect.
The hotel is of course right out of town.If I wanted to be located in the town, this isn't the choice. We stayed because we were dining at Akelare restaurant and this is the best choice to be near the restaurant.Having said that,if you want lovely views this is the place to stay, they are excellent.
The outside of the hotel looks rather nice I thought,as did the reception area,a little English country manor in a way, though perhaps a slightly minor manor house.
Check in was fine as was check out.
The room was bright and sunny but basic,my wife commented slightly DIY.Certainly nothing fancy but for a night perfectly adequate. It was clean and a decent size.No mini bar but we did have a small fridge.Room safe needs a separate key rather than a code which most hotels seem to have nowadays.Bathroom was fine,an over bath shower and towels and toiletries were good.
A/C was excellent.
Tv with no English speaking channels(what's new in much of Spain) and of course no tea or coffee making facilities(what's new in most of southern Europe).WIFI free(Hurrah,at last hotels are catching on)
Breakfast was quite expensive(you are a captive audience because there's nowhere to go nearby) but was filling and though the choices aren't massive I'd be surprised if you didn't have a reasonable breakfast-remembering this is old style Spain so nothing hot is provided.Very much continental. You can have as much as you want from the buffet though and as much juice and coffee as you can handle. You just can't have hot food.
Car parking is free, though not secure but you are in a quiet area so chance of car theft is low I'd think. My Tom Tom had no problem locating the hotel.
Swimming pool was fine, very nice to chill out around and there's a bar in the hotel so you can take a drink to the pool.Towels though aren't provided for the pool and there's a note saying don't take your room towels there--why?Be like me ,ignore it.What's going to happen to you.
One potential problem to mention, though it didn't affect us is that I understand the hotel is popular at weekends for weddings etc. That could pose a problem if a lot of people suddenly turn up and turn a sleepy little hotel into a mad house.I think the bar might struggle, the pool area could get crowded and it might get noisy.During the week probably no problem but you might want to check if there's a function on before you book a Friday or Saturday night.
Hope this helps, and if you like fine dining,Akelare is the bizz.Tasting menu is terrific, though 3* Michelin so pricey

Although 4*, the hotel remains in the 70's. rooms clean but shabby, some things work, wifi in some rooms, air-con in others. Although room service, no tea coffee making facilities or mini bar. Breakfast was appalling, the name Fawlty Towers sprung to mind, when trying to obtain a knife to spread jam! Views are fantastic, although sat nav totally failed to locate the hotel, leading us to a private house up the camino. However one of the few hotels in the area to accept dogs, at an extra charge.

Room Tip: Ask for room overlooking the bay.

This is just an old fashioned Spanish 4 star hotel, that should have been downgraded years ago. The rooms are old fashioned, with furnishings worn away. The bathroom we had was fairly basic, with a brown stained bath tub. A lick of paint would cheer the place up a a little, especially in the rooms and the hotel reception area. Breakfast wasn't anything to write home about! Its saving grace are the views, which are quite spectacular, even in the rain! But probably wouldn't go back there, as there are far nicer hotels in San Sebastian.

friendly welcome, the room was modern, clean and comfortable. The outside of the hotel reminds of good old times of the 50s which we likes. If you have a thing for retro you'll like it here. The views over the terrace are amazing. It is a little far out of town...

After having spend a day in San Sebastian we decided to spend the last night at Hotel Gudamendi which is really outside San Sebastián on one of the hills. Have a real close look on your GPS to reach the hotel safely, it’s tucked away between the trees. Views are amazing from the hotels terrace. Rooms are a bit old fashioned but ok. We were surprised by the basic breakfast for a 4 star hotel like Hotel Gudamendi and decided to enjoy this outside the hotel. For a quiet night outside relatively close to San Sebastian, this is a good choice, though nothing special.
