“Beautiful, artistic, obnoxious 14€ wi-fi charge”
Reviewed 19 October 2013

We found this recently renovated AC Mariott by accident after a late afternoon rental car delay in San Sebastián, where the Eurocar associate suggested Vitoria as an alternate stop. Easy access from a main road into town, hotel has underground parking adjacent (15€), although they're assigned a parking space, which for us meant two trips to the garage, always an adventure.

Hotel lobby AND room beautiful and euro-modern (bathroom especially), with streamlined design, new flat screen tv, reading lights, recharging outlets plentiful, and controls by the bed. Minibar reasonably priced. Breakfast buffet excellent value & terrific restaurant around the corner (Restaurant Mesa).

WHY ONLY 4 STAR RATING? Room rate very good value, however (1) Wi-fi cost 14€ ridiculous! Clearly primary market is conference (spacious conference & exercise facilities at -1 level), so especially annoying that wi-fi is free only in common areas and expensive in the room. Since room is 60€, this translates as 20% surcharge to use a service that's free even in 2 & 3-star hotels all over France and Spain. Just charge a little more for the room and don't nickel'n'dime guests. (2) The only ventilation in room was by opening door to a wire-screened patio. This could be something of a safety issue, since door didn't close properly & screening was insecure room to room or potentially from roof. We felt safe, but others might prefer a higher floor.

ps. Public art is stunning if you like more modern vibe.

Room Tip: See above re 1st floor security. I'd suggest higher floor if this is a concern for you.

We decided to treat ourselves and booked a Junior Suite - out of season and weekend rates made it worthwhile. We were amazed at the size of the room - it had a conference sitting room with a table to seat 8! The bedroom was through another door and was large and had a sofa and easy chair. It was all very black, modern and businesslike- not to everyone's taste I would imagine, but it was clean and the bed was huge!!
There were two mini bars, which when we checked out were told were complimentary. This isn't clear from the info in the room so it is worth double checking with reception so you don't miss out if you want to use them.
On the down side car parking in the area is limited so we used the hotel - 15 euro per day is steep but it was secure and convenient. Wifi is 14 euros for 24 hours of use - so okay if you can charge it to expenses. On the plus side it is well located for the old town about 10 mins walk away.
We ate out and found a great tapas bar called Hiuka, 5 mins walk away serving breakfast and dinner tapas at very reasonable prices.

if you are used to marriott standards then you should stay away from this place.

a) i booked a guaranteed king size room. when checking in they wanted to give us 3 single beds. wtf? we then got a queen size bed. after discussing this we were told that there are only three rooms with king size beds and they were taken already. aha great guarantee.
b) the hotel has 0 baby beds and 0 high chairs. so if you have baby don't come here.
c) the rooms smell. i initially thought we were given a smokers rooms but later realized that other rooms smell the same (i asked to see other rooms). they obviously use some aggressive cleaning materials. only leaving the window open helped.
d) the rooms are tiny. don't believe anything else. the bathroom on the other hand is quite large.
e) it is damn noisy!!! why the heck do they put parquet floor in the rooms? you can hear every step from the room above, next to you and below. not even with earplugs it was possible to sleep without waking up. this hotel is now the worst in regards to noise on my list (the hilton vienna moved down to two).
f) the breakfast is terrible. when we asked for fried eggs we were told that it is too late for that. it was 9:30 and breakfast closes at 10:30. i then went to complain to the reception who forced the kitchen staff to make eggs but that we have to pay for it... when checking out we were tol to pay 29eur for two fried eggs. i refused to pay.

Tip: you don't need to use the hotel garage. you find plenty of free parking on avenida gasteiz and the streets surrounding the hotel.

We loved the stay in the hotel. Its stile is very modern, with very nice furniture in the room and great bathroom. Also the people at the reception treated us greatfully. Very happy of having been there, will definitely repeat if I have the chance.

I stayed in that hotel for 3 nights in august 2012. The rooms are spacious, ours had a balcony with views on a large inner court. Comfortable bed, good quality of sleep. The city centre is 10 min walk far away and there are buses and tramway just beside the hotel. I didn't like so much the breakfast, especially the cutlery and crockery was quite dirty (maybe they had trouble with the dishwasher?).

I spent a night at this hotel because the hotel where I usually stay when I am at Vitoria for work was fully booked. When I got there, I parked my car at the parking. The parking lots are micro car size. When I did the check in I was not informed of anything (where the breakfast is,...) The room was small, as all AC hotel rooms, and the toilet got flooded when I had a shower. The air con did not work. The room had a window to the inner courtyard. The problem was that if I wanted light from outside everybody could see me because there was no double courtain. I had dinner there and it was fair, but could have been much better being in the Basque Country where you can eat so well in many places... At night, I could enjoy the sounds of a couple loving each other. So, not at all an average AC experience.

Room Tip: Exterior higher rooms should be better

I spent a nice time at the AC General Álava with my girlfriend. Rooms were clean though a bit dark. There was a free mini bar in the room with drinks. The hotel is located close to the tramway stop and it's a 15 minute walk to the historic center. There's even a free fitness center which we did not use. We liked it very much and it's worth getting back.
