We hired a car and found the hotel without any trouble (thanks to sat nav) Set in a lovely area surrounded by pine trees and golf courses. Impressive entrance - electric gate, driveway led up to the hotel entrance. Doorman friendly and efficient, checked in without any problems - offered a cool drink of fresh orange then were given a quick tour of hotel to point out restaurants and pool area. Then shown to our room - beautiful, we were above the entrance so had real castle style windows! Views over the countryside, but no balcony. The room was excellent, entrance hall with walk in wardrobe off to the left (plenty of space, but no long hanging space in wardrobe for long dresses) bathroom off to the right, bath, twin basins, toilet and shower. Bathrobes and slippers, toiletries etc. scales - Maybe could have done without them! Housekeeping staff were excellent, everything clean, neat and the room smelled delicious.

The whole hotel was clean and welcoming. A special mention has to be given to the young men who spent hours cleaning the brass handrails!

The views over Palma from the terrace was amazing! We ate here one evening which we wish we had done more often, food was delicious (more of a snack style menu) well presented and staff very polite and efficient. There was a wedding on the Saturday which used the terrace, so hotel guests could not. Food in the main restaurant was very good with excellent service and the tapas bar (not my thing) was good. Buffet breakfast was excellent, plenty of choice, fruit, cereal, eggs how you like them, breads and pastries as well as cooked breakfast food. Again staff very efficient and polite.

Good location for pleasant views of surrounding countryside, but a taxi ride was required to visit Palma for an evening meal. One night we arrived in Palma to find there was a power cut! No food was being served so we ended up going straight back to the hotel.

There was a large swimming pool, another smaller pool with access for disabled and in the kids club a children's pool. On a lower level there was an indoor pool. There were many sun loungers and parasols around the pool, but I did feel they were a little bit too close to each other. This was a last minute booking and my husband was under the impression that it didn't look like the kind of hotel you would take children to - wrong! They certainly made their presence felt - talking, playing, splashing and complaining at loud levels of noise. There was a garden area, grassed lawn with loungers and parasols, these were better spaced and quieter.

I have to say it was not just the children who were making the noise because there were some adults who gave them a run for their money - whether they were trying to make a point or not I don't know, but it appeared to me that having money does not make you have manners.

Would I recommend this hotel? Yes, but obviously warn about noisy children.
Would I go back to this hotel? Yes, maybe out of season, or if it became adult only!

We really enjoyed our time in Mallorca, thanks in large part to this hotel (which we booked on points). Very charming, great service, lovely pool/terraces. Our platinum amenity was free breakfast for our entire family for our 5-day visit... an incredible value. We rented a car so we could easily head to Palma, beaches, sites, etc -- we were glad to have the car, and it was easy to get around. Only complaint was the carpet in our room was a little tired

We just returned from a short break at the Castillo Son Vida hotel. Apart from a few initial glitches, our stay was wonderful, primarily thanks to the stellar service provided by the very helpful and friendly staff. Besides it being a beautiful property, it was really the consistently warm and efficient service that made a difference to us (thank you Raisa for going out of your way to set up new lounge chairs at the pool after two rather irreverent ladies took our chairs as we were having lunch). Congratulations to general manager John Veensma for doing such a terrific job.

Have just returned from Castillo after 10 day holiday. This will be I think our 5th or 6th time at this hotel over the past few years. But sorry to say we won't be returning. The rooms are very tired, carpet wasn't very fresh and there is a smell of sewage all around the public areas which the hotel try to disguise with perfumed fans. The poolside snack bar food is good with nice salads, however the service is appalling. Bread on the table is inconsistent, if you don't ask, it seems you don't get. Most lunchtimes somebody's lunch was always missing which was very irritating as we were forever chasing one of our lunches. There was never any apology as the staff really couldn't give a monkeys. There are 2 pools and one baby pool. Babies in pull up pants seem to favour the adult pools and staff were happy with this. On the second day of our holiday my son found human faeces lying at the bottom of the pool in 3 places. We notified staff who removed it with a net and it seems that was that. No cleaning involved! After our find none of us were comfortable with swimming in the pools. Bar service around the pool is disgraceful, there is one attendant poolside who everyone is trying to attract the attention of for poolside drinks. In the end you give up and get up off your sun bed and go to the bar yourself. This isn't good enough for the prices you pay. There is also preferential treatment with other guests as we watched the pool attendant change favoured guests' towels at lunchtime for fresh ones for when they returned from lunch. On our return every day we found ours as we left them. It truly is insulting, they are completely ripping you off. We stay at The Ritz in London and The Goring and this place is charging similar prices but is more like a Marriott hotel.

First time in Mallorca and an ideal finish to our 2 week tour of Spain. Set in a former castle and overlooking Palma this was the perfect choice for a relaxing 4 day experience. Two things that really stood out for this hotel were: service and views! Everyone from the concierge down to valet were more than accommodating, offering assistance and/or suggestions on restaurants and beaches without any expectations. Rooms were large, clean and satisfactory. Breakfast buffet was more than sufficient. Restaurant, in our opinion, was overpriced for what it offered, so we dined out most nights. Location is ideal, in close proximity to Palma, yet private and offering spectacular views. Would highly recommend this hotel.

We rarely write hotel reviews, but we were so disappointed with our stay that we felt compelled to share our experience with fellow travellers. We are always very happy to pay for luxurious hotels, but to us this hotel (priced at 400 euros/nt during our 3 night stay) is not worthy of its 5 star status and there are so many other lovely hotels in Majorca to choose from, so please research all your options before you book.

For the equivalent price there are some far superior, truly five star hotels (The Gran Hotel Son Net for instance if you are a couple or the Relais & Chateaux hotels). We've tried to be as impartial as possible in our feedback below, but unless you can get a really good deal on price, brace yourself for disappointment:

POSITIVES:
- Only 25 mins from airport and easy access into centre of Palma
- Lots of facilities - golf, indoor/outdoor pools, spa, kids club
- Lovely panoramic views from the upper terrace area which is perfect for sundowner drinks/snacks.
- Very good breakfast buffet with everything you could possibly want.

NEGATIVES:
Very expensive for what it is:
- rooms (late check-out between 1-3pm costs an extra 50 euros)
- drinks (7 euros for a 75cl bottle of San Pellegrino water during the day which is then hiked up to 10 euros in the evening)
- food - tapas restaurant is very over-priced and left us hungry. Menus in general felt quite limited, to the point that we went into Palma for our third night because we were uninspired by the two hotel restaurants.
- early evening taxi that the hotel booked for us into Palma cost 15 euros (before tip), yet was 8 euros when we returned to the hotel at 11pm.

- Cramped pool area without enough sun beds to accommodate guests when hotel is full.
- Rooms are clean and comfortable but 4* in decor and unless you have a deluxe room or better with a view towards Palma, the balconies overlook the non-descript back of the hotel, hillside and private villas.

- Staff were not particularly friendly or helpful and life appeared to be made easier for the hotel than for its guests. As examples, when we tried to eat at the Tapas restaurant (without booking) we were told it was fully booked, yet we could see that there were empty tables. On our last day reception agreed that we could charge lunch to our account and then settle our bill in full on departure, but this was also too much trouble in the end. Petty examples, but just didn't help us feel that guests were valued in any way. We also fedback our various issues to the front desk but nothing was done to improve our stay by the management team.

We hate being so negative and admittedly we did have high expectations partly based on previous trips to Majorca, however we would always try to be fair in any appraisal. If our review has raised doubt over what was going to be an easy decision for you, then all I would ask is that you make sure you are aware of the hotel cancellation policy when you book. Then if you don't like it, you can leave part way through your stay and be truly wowed by one of the many stunning hotels on this magical island.

Room Tip: Request a room with a view towards Palma - not the classic rooms which have a view to back of hotel...
