“Good beach!”
Reviewed 29 August 2013 via mobile

We choose El Arenal because it was near to Palma de Mallorca, the airport and the port. This beach was really nice to have a good sunbath and to enjoy the sea, with a quite white sand and plenty of room to stay in.
The only thing we didn't like was because they have a huge offer of shops for German people, even from the hotels and shops and inclusive and most boring in the restaurants. Taking this thing off, the rest was really good.
We recommend this beach if you want to stay near the busy city and have what to do at night times.

“UK and families beware”
Reviewed 8 August 2013

This resort is the Germanic equivalent of Magaluf which happens to lie bang opposite the bay.
The extreme Eastern end of Platja de Palma is where the main "liveliness" is. There is (nealry) a kilometre stretch of bars proliferated by Germanic 18-30's.
The majority of heavy drinking occurs at night but gangs of males will take to the beach in the day with their ipads plugged into some sort of sound enhancer and buckets of alcohol on the go. taking bottles into the sea to play games or sing rousing songs.

Drinking usually starts early evening. Sitting on the prom wall with a bucket at your feet taking in the contents via a metre long straw - i'm not joking.
The local supermarkets will sell a blue bucket with your drink of choice, bottle of vodka and bottle of coke, sangria, champagne, san miguels, bacardi and coke etc etc.
Once the drink is chosen, you buy a bag of ice from the freezers and your pack of metre long straws and take it to the beach. And irt's not just tlads, the girls are at it too.

There big night clubs aren't as prolific as Magaluf but the open fronted bars can make some noise.
Organised pub crawls can also be arranged. Our last night saw a group numbering 50 gather at Bar 1 before heading off.

Bar 1 - there are a number of municipal run bars along the beach front. Starting at Bar 1 near the harbour and rising in number as you head toward Palma town.
Clean and tidy they offer alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks and good choice of (snack) food. They spread the length of the beach every 300 to 400 yards.
They are a great marker for where to be....or not.

We found that the beach area up to and a little beyond bar 3 belongs to the youngsters and their beach antics. Beyond bar 4 and it settled a bit. More couples and families or youngsters needing some quiet time.
However the tide could still wash up empty beer cans, beer bottles, bottle tops, water filled condoms (classic humour), worryingly half a condom, a sanitary towel or a pair of knickers. Which did spoil an otherwise clean stretch of water with a great shallow path into the sea suiting kids as well as adults.

We REALLY adjusted our expectations of Arenal and Platja De Palma very early on.
So long as we secured a reasonable spot on the beach where our daughter could play safely and happily we were happy too.

We ended up enjoying the break despite a poor hotel and the previously unexpected 18-30 Germanic night crowd.
A lot of them are good kids out for some fun, some you have to just give a nod to let them know they're out of line.

There is a heavy Police crowd, with bikes, cars and vans patrolling the area but their main concern seems to be illegal sunglass sellers and confidence tricksters.

Sunsets can be amazing

Acid Test - will we go again
No!
