“Basic accommodation in a great location... But avoid Room 41!”
Reviewed 13 July 2013

Just back after spending two weeks at Los Lentiscos in a one bedroom, poolside apartment (number 41). As previous reviewers have already mentioned, the Lentiscos is ideally situated within the resort and is basic accommodation. We also knew other families who had been there several times previously so we didn't think twice about booking for this year.
Our first impressions confirmed that the hotel could do with freshing up as there was an "old caravan" smell about the apartment, but that was not a big deal. However, when we returned to the apartment after our first evening out, we were welcomed by four cockroaches, the biggest of which must have been almost three inches long. We reported this to reception and the maintenance man was duly sent to deal with the bugs. However, we encountered the same issue almost every night and were told by other guests that we were just unlucky as they had no such problem. Eventually, after a further complaint to reception, the bathroom (where the majority of the beasts were found) was sprayed which seemed to do the trick. There was also a rat in the pool during our first week which was caught by hotel staff and summarily executed in full view of everybody. Not ideal.
It's a shame as the sleepless nights worrying about the 'roaches spoiled what was an otherwise relaxing holiday.
With regards to the other facilities at the hotel, the gym/jacuzzi/steamroom are in need of a makeover and the evening entertainment on offer was sparse, but in fairness, the hotel was quiet for the first week of our stay.
The resort itself was pretty much the same as last year, although a lot of the restaurants now have staff outside trying to usher customers in, which is a bit of a pain at times. The prices seem to have stayed the same as last year but the exchange rate meant that our cash didn't go as far. As for recommendations, Frankies is great for food and entertainment (thanks especially to Diego and Jade), The Forum serves lovely food (excellent service) and Rodamon was surprisingly cheap for the food on offer.
Don't think that we could return to Los Lentiscos after this experience but we shall definitely come back to this part of the beautiful island of Menorca.

Room Tip: Poolside apartments are best if you have young kids, but beware the bugs.

In essence - the subject title indicates my concerns and enjoyment.

First of all we booked a package with Jet 2 - who describe it as a UK 3 star, and quite clearly it is not, and on the Spanish system it is 2 or 2.5 keys basis. Also before you finally book with Jet 2 read, their terms & conditions which are well hidden in the "small print" and have up to 13 pages. We are in dispute about their booking format and overcharging - but - has nothing to do with Los Lentiscos& the comments i make.

The rooms are very, very basic - but as commented by many people - regularly cleaned & maintained. We do tend to self cater more than eat out - and like most places we visit - consider bringing your own cutlery, as sometimes the exisitng cutlery is "suspect" - + - some elements are not as good [ tin / bottle opener] as they should be in the UK.

We complained that the toaster we had was dirty & unusable - a new one replaced it within an hour. A bed side lamp was out - again this was replaced within a very short time. Our initial room [see later] was 92, and had a small bath - but a fearsome shower with plenty of pressure.

The balacony was large - and although away from the pool - it overlooked the road at the back [ reasonably quiet] and a view of the sea & the coastline. In fact it was directly West - and you could view the setting sun into the Ocean - indeed many people visited the bar / restaurant & rocks close by [ as many as 30 people one night] to watch this view each night - you can get it for free from this room !!

Beds were cool & comfortable, other furnishings quite basic & hard. The TV - 1 euro per hour with no English channels other than BBC world news, sky news and movies for men !! Not worth it - unless you are desperate.

The staff at Los Lentiscos [ especially Ana in reception] were brilliant. Courteous & helpful at all times, and could speak English to a much better standard than i could ever speak Spanish.

About 3 days before we left [ 13 day break] our bath leaked to the flat below & so we had to move from flat 92 to flat 50 [ which overlooked the pool].

Flat 50 - you get the sun in the morning - up to most of the day. Slightly bigger bathroom - but the flat and furnishings were as exact as flat 92.

Important - if you wish a swimming pool view. Most of the flats surround the swimming pool area within a large circle.

Generally odd number flats from number 27 - 79 are on the ground floor & face inwards into the pool area.Flats 28 - 80 are on the first floor [flats 81& 82 ]are over the bar area in the complex.
There are other flats slightly aware from the central complex - and there is a smaller pool at one end of the complex between flats 145/183 which are on the ground floor - and on the first floor between 146 / 184.
PLEASE NOTE THIS AREA [IN MY OPINION] OF THE COMPLEX IS TOTALLY RUN DOWN & TIRED - try and get alternative accoodation elsewhere on the site.

Again i would mention that although very basic and OK ish - Los Lentiscos is tired, needs some money expending on it to bring it up to a slightly better standard. Many things are more or less locked up and forgotten about - e.g. gym, indoor jacuzzi.

This is a real shame as i guess 10 / 15 years ago, this would be a good place to stay.

It has a bar where drinks are served from quite early - but for the eating part - if you wish - nothing is served until 7.00pm - by this time - people have gone out to eat at the many eating establishments less than 100 yards away.

Los Lentiscos has a stage - and music facilities etc - but one young entertainer trying to encourage a couple of children [with parents] into a couple of "party songs" - superman, birdie song etc - does not entertainment make !

May be better in season - but we were there from the 18th to 1st of July, so my comments are reasonaby based.

If you are going to stay - try and miss the 3 days [ or make sure you are there] for the fiesta of "Sant Joan". This was between the 23rd & 25th of June and is held in Ciutadella, and believe me is a sight to see & be involved in -if you like partying for 12/14 hours minimum.

The problem is that from approx the 21st until the 27th approx - there is a massive invasion of young Spanish teenagers [ by this i mean probably about a 100 +] - who virtually take over the place, In a "very happy & shouty way" - especially in the early hours of the morning - anytime between 1.00am through to 5.00am - [ the local buses virtually ran for 24 hours for the festival].

Most of the Spanish were situated around the pool, and whilst thankfully we were slightly away from the "chaos" many "Brits" in the immediate area did not like it. There was no trouble - but there was a lot of noise. No action from the management & i think any other gropup of "kids" - Brits etc - would have been kicked off the complex.

Cala en Forcat is on the door step, with a "one street facility - although it is about a mile long with plenty of places to eat, plenty of bouncy castles, and in the "Jimmy Hill" square nightly entertainment with tribute bands.

Unfortunately the resort is tired, footpaths etc very basic and not a promenade anywher [ if you like this]. We were fed up of walking in the immediate area - and around - as it offered very little.Lots of places were closed or up for sale. Would not recommend longer than a week here.

The beaches number about 3 [ we could not find the last] and in size - i have seen bigger back yards, and they get very crowded.

Plenty of supermarkets - all within 10 minutes of each other - but check them out - some offer better bargains, however all offer a good selection of choice.Personally the "Asda" shop i favoured - although the one facing it was larger and offered greater choice.

Ciutadella is about 20 minutes away on a regular bus service [ every 20 minutes or so] and costs about 1.60 per single journet - other parts of the island - Mahon - can be reached with the bus services based in Ciutadella bus station [ very small]

So that it - my review for what its worth. The Los Lentiscos [ named after a bush] at the reception entrance is basic - with some minor faults. If you dont pay too much - then i think its fair, and offers good value. The swimming pool is nice - is cleaned eacjh morning - the staff are great, but it could do with a little money being spent on it, like the resort could do with also.

Beware of the Fiesta San Joan dates - unless you really like to party !!

Room Tip: To see the sunset [ West] into the ocean - then room 92 specifically - or between 86 - 94 Around...

Have just returned from Los Lentiscos in cala'n Forcat - spent the week 25th June to 2nd July 2013 there - what a diamond of a place - apartments are basic but clean, towels changed twice a week and bedding changed once - Cala'n Forcat is very family orientated but there was very minimal 'hard sell' to get you into restaurants - Castaways pint of San Miguel at less than 2 Euros was a bargain and Jimmy Hill's food and entertainment was excellent. This was our 3rd visit to Menorca - the previous 2 visits were spent at Cala'n Bosch - very nice but Cala'n Forcat has so much more to offer - would definitely recommend it - unless you are a snob and want 5* accommodation at 2* prices!!!!

These aparments were great for our family. Our kids (4 & 1) enjoyed the large pool which was never too busy.
Cala n forcat is a family resort. This was our second visit. We've not found anywhere that caters for kids like this place. Every bar/resraraunt has play areas, bouncy castles and trampolines. If you know of another resort like this I'd like to know it. People on here seem to constantly try and compare it to other places. I've read that "it's menorca's magaluf". Or "it's like Blackpool". No way can they have been to magaluf or blackpool. These idiots should not be allowed to review resorts.
It's a small friendly family resort with a great atmosphere, lovely restaurants and plenty of bars.

The apartments are basic but clean, with adequate cooking facilities and a bath! Towels were changed every other day and beds once a week. Our apartment led straight onto the pool which meant we could dart in and out for food and drinks but the hotel snackbar served lovely, reasonably priced meals. We were a short walk away from a beautiful cove with a gently sloping beach and further on rocky crags with ladders leading straight into the sea. Entertainment was only a stone's throw away, with numerous bars and restaurants, a majority having inflatables etc for the kids. 'Times Square' had excellent tribute/speciality acts on every night which were worth a look. You have to vacate the room at 11.00am but we kept ours on for 25 euros until 4.00pm. All in all a great, reasonably priced holiday!
