For our family ( 2 adults 2 teenage girls ) holiday this year we chose Los Lentiscos apartments (more about this later) at Calan Forcat in Menorca. We were worried it might be a bit too quiet for us. We were pleased to find that Calan Forcat was a lot livelier than we expected. It has enough restaurants on the "strip" to ensure you have plenty of choice. After trying a few restaurants we settled on eating on a night at Bianco where the food was wonderful and the staff were very friendly and made us feel welcome every time we dined there. For entertainment we often went to Jimmy Hills which is a square with comfy chairs circling a central stage where tribute groups perform each night. During the day there are four main coves within a fifteen minute walk from Los Lentiscos. Calan Blanes has the biggest beach and a restaurant but it has a lot of boats and the sea was dirty. Calan Brut has no beach or amenities but has some wonderful flat terraces surrounding the cove for sunbathing or diving into the sea. Calan Forcat also has no amenities but it is a beautiful narrow cove with a small beach and 100 yards of shallow sandy sea bed leading to a deeper area where you can snorkle and look at hundreds of fish in crystal clear water. Calan Piques is a small cove and beach with a snack bar it was our favourite at the beginning but then the porta loos started smelling really bad and we abandoned it. Overall the Calan Forcat area is a fantastic resort, the restaurant staff and shop owners are very friendly but suffers from the usual Spanish resort problem of the over-powering smell from the sewers.
Now for the Los Lentiscos apartments. On arrival at 11pm first impressions were bad, on entering our apartment ( no100) the smell of sewers hit us but it looked like it had been refurbished recently and was clean, it was the usual basic apartment, one bedroom, bathroom, kitchen/living room. The apartment was right next to the road and you could hear and feel the coaches going past all night. The sofa bed had a few broken slats so we moved all four mattresses into the bedroom. After a quick walk around the resort we returned to our apartment to get some sleep. During the night my youngest daughter woke up complaining that something was crawling over her which we dismissed at the time. The next night just as we were going to bed we found a cockroach climbing the curtains, which we put down to having the window open as it was unbearingly hot during the night with no air conditioning or fan. We killed this cockroach. The following morning we found another cockroach, this one dead. This was the last straw and went to reception and demanded a change of room. Initially we were told that cockroaches live in Menorca and it was to be expected. After demanding that they move us into another room they agreed. Our new room (no 66) was in a better position overlooking the pool, away from the road and there was no smell of sewers as we entered so we finally settled down to our holiday. After 4 days in our new apartment and not seeing a maid we went to complain and the following day we got fresh bedding and towels but the apartment wasn't cleaned. Then as we were getting dressed one night we noticed a musty smell on our clothes on closer inspection we found that the wardrobe stank so we then had to remove our clothes from it. Room summary - looks clean but scratch the surface it is dirty. The pool was cleaned daily. Simon doing the entertainment tried his best but with an obviously limited budget the entertainment was poor. I found the staff to be surly and the Spanish holiday makers loud.
Overall great resort lousy complex.
