“Everything we wanted for a super relaxing holiday”
Reviewed 11 October 2013

We had a very early start leaving UK so it was bliss to find a room that was not only ready for us but exceeded our expectations: it was spacious, comfortable and well-equipped with a huge terrace/balcony overlooking the pool. As we'd booked half-board, we only used the kitchen facilities to make tea & coffee. If you like proper coffee you will need to buy filter papers from the supermarket next door. We also bought a mug as the cups provided are quite small.

We thought the selection and the quality of the food at both breakfast and dinner was excellent: my husband is a finicky eater but during our 10 day stay he found something to please him 90% of the time. The fish is particularly good, especially the seabass fillets which were twice the size you normally get! Thanks to Josefa for her skill on the grill, cooking me an omelette breakfast everyday and fish most evenings.

All the staff in the hotel were friendly, helpful and cheerful. The service from everyone was first class. The location is very convenient for the local shops and bars, the beach, the marina and the bus into Ciutadella.

We had room 372 which was over the bar but we didn't have any problem with noise - sometimes sitting on the balcony in the evening I could hear the music from the bars down by the marina more than the hotel bar. My only (very minor) quibble was that the shower curtain wasn't always effective at keeping water off the bathfoom floor.... why don't hotels have shower screens? I didn't try the spa as the treatments were all expensive but the gym equipment is free if that's the kind of thing you like to do on holiday. The pool is good, deep enough for swimming at the one end, shallow for little ones at the other. Overall, the hotel facilities and service are excellent and Menorca is a very pretty island.

Room Tip: Some rooms are on 2 levels, say if you find stairs a problem.

In writing an honest review of this hotel I will have no choice but to identify ourselves to the staff but am happy to do this.
We were really encouraged by the reviews of other travellers before we went and they were not wrong. This hotel is fantastic. We e-mailed the hotel before we went to tell them it was our anniversary whilst we were there and Pablo on reception said 'Happy Anniversary' when we arrived which was lovely. On our anniversary itself there was a card and a bottle of Cava in our room. A really nice surprise. Our room overlooked the pool and was on the third floor. The room was spotlessly clean, really well laid out and the kitchen facilities very good. Beds were comfortable and the shower was fantastic, no temperature issues and really strong pressure. The additional seating area was good and it did feel like a home from home once unpacked. There is a supermarket literally next door and the prices were good and the selection of food also good. There are 2 others we found in the harbour area anyway. Unfortunately my Husband broke a toe on the first evening and the staff could not have been more helpful. Lucia and Maria in the restaurant got us some ice but it did need hospital treatment the following day and everyone from reception to the restaurant showed real kindness and consideration the whole time.
The pool area was spotlessly clean, I have never seen such a clean pool and no horrid chlorine smell. We could always get a sun bed which came in handy for us seeing as we weren't going far and even these were cleaned every morning and yes, no towels on them from 6.00 in the morning! The bar by the pool was good although service there was a little slow for us but this was probably because it was busy.
The restaurant Manageress Lucia was an absolute star, so welcoming and brilliant with the small children that were there. There was a mix of couples, groups to wider extended families. Breakfast was very good, a wide selection of hot and cold food on offer and lactose free milk which is rare even in the best hotels. Dinner was more of a challenge on some nights as the vegetarian selection was limited and although I eat fish, some of the sauces and the vegetables themselves contained meat. I didn't however go hungry and the trout that was grilled on the hotplate was outstanding. Bar prices were ok.
There was entertainment on 4 times whilst we were there and whilst not really our thing normally, we did go to hear the Spanish guitarist and see the flamenco dancers who were excellent but not on for long enough! There is a nice seating area outside of the entertainment lounge where you can still enjoy the warmth of the evening and see or hear the show.
The location is great, 5 minute walk to the harbour with the bars, restaurants and shops and 5 minute walk to the beach area which also had bars and restaurants.
All in all a very relaxing and lovely week in a very good, friendly and clean hotel. We shall return. Thank you staff at Macarella.

Room Tip: rooms overlooking the pool get the sun from afternoon through to the evening but they face the harbo...

Returned from a 10 night holiday, with my Sister, on 7th September and we loved every minute of it. The apartment was absolutely beautiful, even better than the brochure, and was so relaxing. It felt like home straight away. We were on the 2nd floor overlooking the pool and couldn't have had a better location. Well equiped kitchen and a full sized fridge for vino and essentials! I wanted to mention that the hotel does supply pool towels, for free, because Thomson don't mention that in the brochure and although the free wi-fi doesn't stretch as far as the rooms, it is available in the reception area and just outside on the benches at the front. Check also at reception about free parasols and beach mats which are often left by guests who like to use the super nearby beach. The staff are fabulous, so helpful and friendly and everywhere is spotlessly clean. There were more children that I expected, but mainly babies and toddlers and it wasn't a problem for us, but could be for some couples. Whilst the food was good, I had been spoilt by staying in a Riu last year and so I couldn't help comparing. I think they need to extend the buffet and offer more choices, but it's a personal thing and would not stop me going back. The resort has plenty to offer and the local bus is frequent and on time. It had been about 15 years since my last visit to Menorca and the island is still as beautiful and so clean everywhere. Ciutadella and Mahon are so worth visiting. Do the island trips to see more of this wonderful place if you don't want to hire a car.
All in all it was the most wonderful holiday, and the weather was amazing, so I would happily recommend it.

Room Tip: Overlooking the pool was wonderful and the lower floors seemed to suit people with small children...

Want to go back.....now. I don't think there is anything we can fault about this hotel....excellent staff, plenty of choice at breakfast, apartment very spacious, hotel in good location near beach and marina which has plenty of bars and restaurants, buses run frequently if you want to get out and about, hotel grounds immaculate and plenty of sun loungers. I would definitely go back.....thank you macarella

This was the first holiday with our 1 year old so I was a little apprehensive about the hotel, and Menorca as we had never visited before. I'm Captain Research and am glad I took the time and found this gem.

From the outset the hotel put smiles on all our faces - great looking (the grounds were impeccably kept), clean and in a good location. Our room was perfect - clean, spacious and the mini kitchen was very useful. At all times the staff were eager to help and never too busy to answer the odd question from me or my daughter. Monika, Javi and Maria stood out from an already excellent bunch.

The pool was fantastic for both our daughter and us (separate kids pool and gradient entry to main pool) and there was plenty of outdoor space to avoid that cramped feeling.

The food was fantastic - a really great selection every night with the chefs very visible, working on the fresh fish station, tapas, or freshly made smoothies. You can really tell that pride was taken in the food, not simply overpowered by garlic like we have experienced in other countries.

The evening entertainment, although not our thing, was good and we enjoyed listening in on the music from our room.

Overall I couldn't fault the Macarella, and I am picky. It's not 5 star but is not trying to be - it's a marvellous place to spend a holiday and we were completely relaxed from start to finish. We'll be back, but no need to book with Thomson next time.

Have just returned from the Macarella and really were impressed. The hotel is definitely worthy of its 4 star rating. On arrival we were upgraded to a 2 bedroom suite which was a very pleasant surprise. We were overlooking the pool and had no problem with noise at all. The room not only had 2 bedrooms but 2 complete bathrooms, large balcony with 5 chairs and a table and wall mounted clothes airer. The fee of 25 Euros for the safe included a refundable 5 Euro deposit. No need for remotes for the TV's as I am luckily old enough to remember how to use the controls on the tv as we did in the good old days. Staff were all very pleasant and I think the comments about the waitors clearing away in the dining room were fair but did not get the impression they were rushing you but just simply clearing the table of used plates. Food was excellent. Lots of variety, Chefs regularly checked the buffet and replenished as necessary. Bars, Restaurants, Supermarkets, Beach, Harbour and Buses all on the doorstep practically.
Gardens, pool, and hotel all immaculately clean and well kept. I would highly recommend this hotel to families, couples and solo travellers as everyone is really friendly.
Food and drink prices in the hotel are comparable to those in the resort.

The staff are so friendly and obliging. The buffet is excellent with a very varied array of food. Something grilled each night as well as the normal buffet. The rooms are large and the t.v. works too. Depends what you want some rooms overlooking the pool may be a little noisy. Room 127 on the back overlooks the supermarket and delivery entrance but it is quiet. We asked for a pool view but the hotel was full and we could not change. I think this hotel would benefit by being adults only. Just a short walk to the harbour. This hotel has every thing you need including the gym and spa.
