“Sea view”
Reviewed 20 January 2014

We had booked only that morning, so were too late for a sea view room. Decided to leave Playa del Ingles and spend a day or two in the capital. Our window looked onto a concrete shaft and the room next door. Helpful staff. Nice size rooms with twin beds.

Room Tip: I echo the other reviews. If you get the chance spend a few extra Euros on a sea view.

My husband and I were booked on a cruise of the Canary Islands and arrived in Gran Canaria a few days early. Neither of us had been to Gran Canaria before. I booked us into Colon Playa Apartments from the internet and I am so glad I did! We arrived late at night to a near-deserted airport, but the taxi driver knew exactly where to take us (30 Euro fare) and was extremely helpful and professional. The location couldn't have been better - right on the gorgeous main beach, the room was neat, clean and modern and the staff were helpful. The rate was very reasonable and far less than you would expect for that location. The only down side was the twin beds instead of double, but the location made up for that. It was one of the best holidays we've ever had.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view with a balcony.

As everyone has said, this hotel is in a perfect location. The door leads on to the promenade and then a huge expanse of golden sand of the beach

We choose a Sea View room, and emailed to ensure that this included a balcony - which we received a quick positive reply. The apartment itself was basic at best but generally acceptable. However, we spent most the time on the large balcony - wow, sunshine almost all day (9am to 8pm), and fantastic view of the beach and area. I think I can understand some of the reviews of "dark and dingy", as if we didn't have the balcony, then it wouldn't have scored so highly in our eyes.

The area has plenty of bars and restaurants, and perfectly safe at night.

Have a great trip - and make sure you pay the extra for a sea view if choosing this hotel. We will definitely be back.

Room Tip: Pay the extra for a sea view room, or book elsewhere (Astoria offers a good value hotel without balc...

I visited Las Palmas this month for a quick shopping trip and Colon Playa was my only choice given its excellent location.
The hotel is very basic, infact when I first entered I was slightly disappointed.
But once I entered the rooms, they were spacious and had a good view of the beach.
The shopping centres were walking distance and there was good night life around.

If you are looking for a fancy, luxurious stay Colon Playa is not for you. If basic necessities are enough, I'd highly recommend this place.

Huge terrace with views of the sea and headlands, a table, three chairs, two recliners and an apparatus to hang your clothes out to dry. A sunshade or canopy would be nice. During the daytime, there can be buskers nearby but at night there is only the sound of the sea. Apartment spacious with a table, chairs, desk, tv, safe and twin beds. Small kitchen with microwave and hotplates and a minifridge. The cleaning woman does not do the dishes. Had to buy washing up liquid and a scrubbing brush. Bathroom has an opening on one wall to admit natural light via the kitchen. A mirror to see the back of your head, shower (not power), bath etc. Only two sachets of bath gel and shampoo and not replaced daily. Had to buy soap. The apartment was bright and light during the day and at night the internal lighting was good. The staff in reception were exceptionally agreeable and there is a computer for quick Internet checks on the ground floor. The lifts always arrived quickly. Location is, of course, excellent, right on the main seaside concourse and with food shops and restaurants everywhere around. The No. 1 from the bus station passes by during the daytime although at night one has to walk several blocks from stop by the AC Hotel. Las Palmas has very little street parking but quite a lot of paid covered garages.

Room Tip: Pagar el extra para una habitación exterior con balcón o terraza aunque las habitaciones interiores...

Great value for money! No negatives on service, room and cleanliness. Location right straight on Cantaras beach.

Minus 1: I didn't like quality of mattress, I believe they try to protect it with extra layer of synthetic, which doesn't make it comfortable

Minus 2: location quite noisy during nighttime. Cars, people, promenade and beach cleaning, something is going on there all the night. No problem though if you are quite tired from previous day activities :-)

Very good value though, but looking backwards I would stay all the time in the southern places like Ingles, Maspalomas or Puerto Rico and travel to north just for sightseeing.

Reviewed 26 February 2013

I booked this apartment for its beachside position. We booked quite late as we hadnt realised it was carnival week. We arrived to be told by the friendly daytime receptionist that he was 'sorry, but this is the only room we have'. When we got to the room I saw what he meant and why he was apologetic !
The room was very clean but on opening the curtains we looked out into a shaft in the middle of the building. The noise was horrendous from the Italian restaurant next door. But when we closed the window it was silent. Ok in February, but I'd hate to have to do that in summer!

There were hardly any plates and cutlery, not even enough to easily make a light breakfast ( couldnt find anywhere doing the full english ) and no kettle ??? Im not keen on boiling a pan of water to make coffee.
Our caravan has many more facilities !
We couldnt tell if it was day or night if we hadnt a clock and phones as the shaft was lit day and night.
The second night was quite warm so we opened the window at 1am after the restaurant had gone a bit quieter - only to hear the sounds of a couple - how do I put it politely ? grunting, screaming and banging the bed against the wall. So we had to close it again. The windows are in close proximity and built around a shaft, so you can hear every breath from anyone with their window open.
The nightime reception was the opposite of the daytime one - rude and surley.
Oh - and we got stuck in the lift. 3 people in it and it stuck. Luckily it was on the ground floor and my husband managed to force the door open after ringing the alarm umpteem times. The evening guy just carried on with his phone call and had paid no interest to the alarm although he was feet away!
I'd still recommend it because of the great position but please make sure you have a balcony as I promise that you will regret it if not.

Room Tip: Be sure to get a room with a balcony. If there isnt any, just go elsewhere.
