“Hard to access and not as spectacular as in pictures”
Reviewed 5 July 2014 via mobile

Playa de Papagayo wasn't easy to get here with small children, on a bumpy road and then down a pretty steep hill (Playa de Mujeres was a bit easier). And finally it didn't feel much different than other beaches. It's definitely more spectacular when seen from a distance.

Reviewed 24 June 2014

great beaches, only 3 euros for a car full of people, bit of a struggle to climb down to beach but worth it.

“Great for snorkelling”
Reviewed 20 June 2014

Beautiful beach, we visited on a day that was fairly quiet so it wasn't too crowded which was lovely. The kids had a great time snorkelling, plenty of fish to see. The restaurant beside it is a total rip off. 3 of us got ice cream and it cost €14! So definitely come with a packed lunch and the cooler box. As others have mentioned the drive up to it is a bit hairy but we survived intact. There is a €3 charge to get into the area.

“Best beach in Lanzarote! (Not disabled/ limited mobility friendly tho'!)”
Reviewed 19 June 2014

Given that Lanzarote is a volcanic island you would think nice beaches are few and far between but there are quite a few and Playa de Papagayo is probably the best beach on the island. Be warned though, if you have a disability or have limited mobility, getting to the beach may present a challenge for you since the beach is set down and is enclosed by almost mountainous terrain. You access the beach via a unpaved road which you pay 3 euros to drive down and park. The fee is well worth it and without paying and driving there, you easily face a 30 minute walk across unforgiving terrain from the nearest town.

The beach is very child friendly since is it set back within the rocks which creates a natural barrier from the waves and currents. The water is crystal clear and the beach is soft sand spoiled only by the inconsiderate litter bugs and smokers who stump their fags out in the sand. Since this is Europe you can expect to see the odd 'breast out bathers'. Mornings are probably the best time to visit since come the afternoon, when the tide was coming in, a number of Jelly fish started appearing n the sea and on the beach. We have do idea if they cause painful stings so we didn't risk it and just stopped swimming.

In the end we spent a good 5 hours there. There is a restaurant and the top of the hill leading down to the beaches with some stunning views.

It is a very nice bay! Worth spending a day there. However, please bear in mind that there are not many shade spots, especially if you go with young children.
