“A great place to base yourself to get around this magical island”
Reviewed 24 November 2013

We loved it!

I'll get the hard bits out of the way first. The rating - you'll see lots of references and marketing referring to '5 Star'; this is not a 5 star hotel by any international rating (Forbes etc). In addition, it may have been 5 star by island standards at one time but some have taken that standard higher in recent years. What lies behind a carefully designed and minimally decorated foyer is an excellent (for the price) standard hotel just like you find in any other capital city - and I mean excellent standard. The second point is the location - this is not a resort hotel. Arrecife is the capital of the island and it is a working town/city. The area proximate to the hotel is pretty run down but this is purely a reflection of recent economic times and the decline of the fishing industry and ,ore concerted efforts to focus on the resorts and tourism for the while of the island's economy. Regardless of the decline in the local area, it is very safe and a part of the city's charm in a way. In sum, none of these factors take from the fact that this is a great hotel in a fantastic location for getting around the island.
The Food - we wen half board and it was of a fantastic standard with lots of choice between freshly cooked foods. With the half-board option you can eat in the top floor restaurant for 50% of the carte price - this is really worth it and try the taster menu which is a delight and really worth it.
The Rooms - perfectly adequate and very clean. The finishing isn't always the best (it seems as if they were in a rush to get the place finished) but it doesn't matter. there is a fridge but no tea & coffee making facilities which was a disappointment.
The Staff - excellent friendly people.
The Area - there is much to do. Immediately adjacent to the hotel is a quiet beach which is very clean and safe (tide rips etc) - one thing to note, there is a reef bed covering much of the beach - check it out when the tide is out for a safer swim when the water gets higher. There is a beautiful inlet harbour with so,e amazing Tapas restaurants that of a very high standard and great value - you have to try the calamari and garlic chilli prawns - you can still taste the sea they are so fresh! A bit further a filed is the museum or modern art in an old fort tower which at 4 euros is a bargain. You can easily use the local bus transport or hire a car/bike to get further afield.

Room Tip: Get on the local bus to travel around the island.

I thought it might warrant 4 stars as I can be (too?) demanding on certain aspects of a stay but Zi really feel 3 is enough. Much depends on your expectation and requirements as the hotel might deliver for you.

Room - I was lucky with a suite on the side furthest away from the pool/bar area which was noisy some nights with entertainments. I was on the 4th floor which is a little too low to miss the noise of people outside, there is no garden so the area immediately around the hotel is public. But it was clean and well looked after. Great view of the port and sea and a couple of arm chairs to sit in too. There was a fridge but you have to sign up to a regular daily usage which was not competitively priced so I stocked it from the mini market around the corner. Air con was not effective but not vital on a winter break as the windows at this level do open. Good supply of toiletries indeed but probably not necessary.

Gym/Spa/pool - sadly not what I was expecting. Reasonable set of cardio machines but not all well maintained and the multigym weight machine was unusable. I asked to use the sauna but you cannot use this independently of the Spa which is €15 for an hour an a half. The pool is very small and no use for serious exercise. As this was a major part of my holiday relaxation I was more than a little disappointed.

Instead there is a great paved walkway south (several miles) along the sea wall so you can jog or hire a bike (which it what I did at an unexpected extra cost).

Breakfast - excellent except for the lack of real fresh coffee, it is all from a vending machine. Unbelievable to me.

Coffee shop on top floor okay but service just seemed slow and/ or inattentive so I tended to go out for drinks.

That's a flavour of it. It is more a city hotel than a Marriott style resort hotel and lacked a holiday atmosphere but I liked the look of it on the website so no one to blame but me. I would not go back rather put it down to experience.

Location right on the beach which is nice sand and clean. You can swim too so the pool issue was not so bad for me. Easy to get to the airport. Get your own taxi as at €15 each way it is cheaper than many transfers.

Where do we start?

We arrived yesterday and were told at reception that there was a 'problem' with some of the rooms and that we would be upgraded tomorrow, after we take a taxi for 30 minutes to another hotel for the night.
We arrived back at the hotel today looking forward to our upgraded room.
The first room that we were given did not have a sea view, which we had paid for initially when booking the holiday.
The second room we were given already had a guest staying in it, whom we met when we walked in on him.
Finally, the third room was up to the standard and has beautiful sea views (what we paid for).

We then decided that we would like to request robes from reception. After 4 phone calls and a visit to reception we got eventually got them.

On the same day, we decided to rent a coffee machine, which cost £20. We were told that we would receive coffee capsules, tea bags, milk, sugar and biscuits. When the coffee machine arrived we were given less capsules than we had paid for, no tea bags and no milk. Once again we had to venture down to reception (who by this point were probably sick of the sight of us and knew our room number off by heart).

Despite the awful service we had experienced so far, the suite with a sea view is spectacular and we are extremely pleased with this aspect. Also, the spa in the hotel has excellent facilities and is well worth a visit.

All in all, the hotel is very nice however the staff and service are both substandard and have made us feel uncomfortable in asking reception for anything.

Room Tip: We paid for a double room with a sea view and were upgraded to a suite with a sea view which is love...

My partner and I are both well travelled and have stayed in some world class hotels across the globe. However when reading the mixed reviews before we departed the UK we were left feeling a slightly dubious.

When we arrived we had been upgraded to a suite on the 14th floor. The room was spacious and the views of the sea, the beach and the hills looking out from both the lounge area and the bedroom were magnificent.

On the first evening of our six night stay we decided to eat in the Altamar restaurant on the 17th floor. The food was exactly what you would expect at a 5* hotel.

We also ate breakfast in the buffet restaurant most mornings during in our stay. The variety was never ending and was all to a great quality.

Should you decide to stay at the Gran I would highly recommend that you utilise the spa facilities which are available. On two occasions we went for the spa pool circuit which is amazingly reasonably priced at €15pp for 1.5-2 hours. Bargain!! Whilst talking of the Spa, pool towels are available free of charge from the Spa-remember to take your pool towel card though.

All of the staff that we came into contact with were all extremely polite and friendly.

We loved this hotel. Absolutely everything about it. Truly worthy of it's well deserved 5*'s.

Arrecife itself doesn't offer a great deal for tourists, but Lanzarote is so small all of the busier resorts are only a short taxi ride away.

If you are thinking of hiring a car please do use a company in either Peurto Del Carmen or Costa Teguise as we hired one from the car rental shop opposite the hotel which soon became apparent that we had paid an excessive amount for the two days.

I got a deal on a room so I suppose I didn't expect the 5 star room. It was fine, clean well maintained and comfortable, I have had much bigger rooms in a 4 star hotel
Reception staff were OK polite and helpful. Although they did not mention that in order to get a towel for the pool a token was required which had to be exchanged at the spa.- other guests told me about this.
Staff in the Pool bar were either very nice and friendly or those who were deigning to lower themselves to venture near a guest. We ate there once the burger was returned to be properly cooked and the tuna , veg salad was some pasta with a tin of tuna through it and about 5 pieces of pepper. We were not impressed.
We did not eat at the top floor bar as we got fed up waiting for service and left.
Breakfast is totally self service with a wide selection of both hot and cold food
The pool was said to be heated. I still had goose bumps after 10 mins. I thought it was odd that there were no changing rooms near the pool.

Had a meal for four people in the restaurant on 08/11/13 and it was very disappointing.

1). The main course was tepid and despite the fact of being sent back there was no improvement. The duck was pure fat.

2). Waiter service was indifferent where they had to be asked to clean the table to clear up a mess that they created themselves.

I am sure that there are wonderful restaurants in Arrecife but this is not one of them and definetely not value for money.

We loved this hotel - absolutely everything about it is excellent and truly worthy of 5* status. Food, awesome. Bar, peaceful and generous. Room, Excellent. However, the location doesn't offer a great deal for tourists, it's a world apart from Carmen that's packed with tourists and souvenir shops. We'd choose here again in a flash, but not for too many days - as you need to travel around to find stuff to do. Perhaps if you had a car (we didn't) this would be perfect for longer.

Room Tip: Get an ocean view
