Hotel Villa Vik, Lanzarote
Once one of the super luxury Villas built along this southern Lanzarote coastline, this 14 bedroom “adults only” boutique hotel provides the ultimate in “chill-out” tranquillity with genuinely friendly and wonderful service in a modern attractive setting. When staying here you are made to feel more like valued house guests rather than mere hotel customers.
Extensive renovations took place in 2007 but many original features such as the unique walled in garden and swimming pool have been retained. All rooms are unique, comfortable and spacious. Ours had a sitting area (with settee, writing desk and television), dressing room, large bathroom and separate loo. My wife especially liked the full-sized roll topped bath. I appreciated the “proper” plugs to the bath and sinks that actually kept the water in! We were on the lower level with an outside sitting area in front of the pool. Rooms are kept spotless with faultless “house keeping”.
The dining rooms and other public areas are attractive with evidence of unique design elements and many original pieces of art work – indeed the upper floor corridors are art galleries in their own right!
Outside there are plenty of comfortable sun beds for everyone around the pool and thoughtfully, beach towels are provided each day. Refreshments are served outside when required. Cacti enthusiasts will be amazed at the wonderful varieties growing amongst the almost black volcanic rock and palm trees in this unique garden.
It should be noted that rooms on the ground floor tend to be somewhat dark, mainly due to the overhanging balcony to the rooms above. I suppose that this shade might well be welcome in mid-summer.
We were booked in for half- board (breakfast and dinner). Breakfasts were good with a wide choice, including cooked food. The bread supplied was superb. Dinners however were a little disappointing with fairly limited choice and, although adequate, certainly not up to “gourmet” standard which, compared to the 5 star quality of everything else, is a shame. There is however a good wine list and some very palatable local wines are available at moderate cost. Lunchtime light meals are available at reasonable prices and refreshments are served around the pool at any time if required.
The immediate area around the hotel is essentially residential and boasts some large exclusive private villas behind high walls. However, there is some evidence of Spain’s economic decline. A walk towards the sea takes you across a derelict building site where it is obvious that development has come to an abrupt halt.
This, mostly rocky, part of the coast has a fabulous paved promenade stretching from the capital Arrecife almost to the airport. This car free pathway is widely used by cyclists, joggers and walkers – Villa Vik is about 30 minutes’ walk from Arrecife. Some sandy beaches, small bars and restaurants are within walking distance in both directions.
In conclusion, if, like my wife and I, you want a short holiday to relax and be thoroughly spoiled in tranquil semi-tropical surroundings, then this is the place for you.
