“Relaxing Time”
Reviewed 16 December 2011

We arrived at Midnight, and were put in "The Dungeons" Room 021 (Rooms under the pool) We were happy with the room. Very clean and the balcony was spacious and we were very happy to find a tray of fruit, salad, cold meats and bread waiting for us after our days travelling. The air conditioning didn't really work. There were only 2 English channels on TV. (We weren't there to watch TV though.) No Wifi in rooms, only Pool Bar and Reception. Workmen had a tool hut under our balcony and were quite noisy at 7am, so keep balcony window and main window closed if they are still doing the road works when you go (I think they should finish soon).

Hotel guests were about 80% German. Probably most of Puerto de la Cruz was 80% German.

Pool was very quiet even though it was mid 20's most days.

Entertainment wasn't to bad. Seen worse.

Staff didn't speak a great deal of English, but we got by OK, and it gave me an opportunity to try a bit of Spanish.

My Girlfriend and I are in our 30's, and enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere the hotel had, and being waited on hand and foot.

We both enjoyed the food, and there where vast amounts to choose from buffet style for Breakfast and Dinner. Every Champagne at breakfast!!! Tea/Coffee/Juice/Champagne were all free in the morning, but drinks have to be paid for in the evening meals.

Didn't enjoy the steps much, but there is a free bus service into and back to town daily. Or taxi is about 3 Euro.

David the Thomson Rep was very helpful, and booked our excursions with no commission. He even gave us a refund for a trip we missed when we missed the bus.

All in all we really enjoyed our week at the El Tope, and would definitely stay again if we visited Puerto de la Cruz.

Room Tip: Pay the extra to upgrade. No English TV channels, but on the Channels "La Sexta" the show...

Well this was our third time at this hotel, and we had read some of the reviews before we went this time - and am writing to put our view. Ok, some of the carpets and areas are needing updating. However, when you think of the value and everything else this hotel offers - we certainly did not need anymore. The service in the hotel is fabulous - the reception staff cannot be more helpful! We had a great 11 nights - got back last week. We will be going back for a fourth visit we are sure. THANK YOU EL TOPE FOR A GREAT TIME

We have just returned (10/12/11) from a 10 day stay at El Tope.
It was well worth booking a Superior room which gave plenty of space and a big balcony plus welcoming fruit and bubbly - our sea view was good but a mountain view (south side with afternoon and evening sun) would have been even better. Standard rooms appeared to be smaller with much poorer outlook.
All of staff were very friendly and helpful and rooms were kept spotlessly clean.
A great choice of food in the buffet dining room - fresh grilled fish and good meat joints as well as many stews etc plus a big range of salads and vegetables. Wine list was limited but reasonably priced.
Entertainment was pretty basic but there was plenty going on in Puerto!
Re negative comments by others - yes the steps up from town are a bit of a pull but at 75 I didn't get out of breath; the road works made a noise but didn't start too early and will hopefully soon be finished.
Overall we found our holiday to be very good value and will be back to El Tope again.

Room Tip: superior rooms are worth extra; south side better views and more sun

My wife and I have just returned home after a week's stay at El Tope, 22nd to 29th Nov.,2011. This was our fourth visit to Tenerife, and our third to Puerto de la Cruz. I decided to write after reading some of the appalling rubbish posted about the hotel by some of our compatriots. We can honestly say that we enjoyed every minute of our stay and believe that it was the best value for money of all our visits. We had some reservations about going half board, but the evening meals were a revelation - suffice it to say I am currently having do do a bit of dieting to get ready for Christmas. We found the staff uniformly friendly and helpful, with the odd problem being sorted out straight away. It may be fair comment to say that some of the decor is a little tired, but all the rooms and amenities were clean and tidy and the service was excellent. All right the median age was quite high, but sometimes, when you're lounging by the pool, that can make you feel rather good about yourself. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, would have no hesitation in recommending it to our friends and plan to go there again in the future, hopefully for more than a week.

We also stayed at this hotel last year in November so knew what it would be like. The room was lovely (323) on a corner at the back with a fantastic view of Teide. As has been mentioned in other reviews there is extensive pedestrianisation work going on around the hotel with drilling and vehicles reversing accompanied by beep beeping from around 7.30am to 5pm. Of course this is not the fault of the hotel but there is no chance of a lie in! The food in the hotel is no better than it was last year. Breakfast was bearable apart from there being dinosaurs in breadcrumbs available to go with the fried breakfast on two mornings. As the average age of the guests is around 70 this seemed rather inappropriate. The hotel has added filter coffee to the breakfast drinks so there is no need to have coffee out of the machine unless you actually like something that neither looks nor tastes like coffee and has frothy UHT milk on top. All the milk is UHT which is not to my taste although I think the Spanish do prefer it. We did not risk the evening meal and tried to find decent places to eat in the evening. This was quite difficult. We tried the Mil Sabores-pretentious and awful. El Pescador-awful, Don Camillo-food good but service disorganised, La Isla-wonderful and Sapore d'Italia- unpretentious good food and good value. (I have reviewed these seperately) The little supermarket up the hill just past the apartments is friendly and sells ordinary fresh milk, bread, water etc and stays open till 10pm. We have been to Tenerife 9 times and have decided to give it a rest for a while, very few English people seem to go to Puerto any more and some Germans need to understand that being polite is not a sign of weakness. We offered to change tables in a restaurant so that a party of Germans could have more room and not one of them said thank you. I found that quite disappointing as I would never normally subscribe to a generalised prejudice against any group of people.

Room Tip: The rooms at the back of the hotel have the sun all day and a fantastic view of Teide and the sea. W...

This hotel had been strongly recommended by someone who visits here frequently so we expected to be 100% satisfied. Sad to say we weren't, it all looks a bit tired. The staff were courteous enough but they seemed less than enthuisiastic on many occasions. The gym was very poor with limited well worn equipment. It seemed like big savings were being made with regards to the food that was on offer. Poor quality and the menu was boring and almost the same every night and quite often tasteless. Although we booked for dinner we often ate out.

The entertainment was at a level you would get in a poor holiday camp, quite depressing really and we avoided the lounge as a consequence.

when the sun shines, which was rare during our stay as Puerto was under a black cloud for most of our 2 week stay, there is a fight for space as everyone grabs a bed. Same old problem were people of certain nationalities grab a bed, chuck a towel down on it and disappear until the afternoon.

I really think anyone with dodgy knees or a weak heart should avoid this hotel as the steps into town our a bit ardous. This doesn't seem to be an issue for the main clients of this hotel as most seemed over 60+. Not a place for those of a lesser age really.

Overall we were disappointed with the standard and quality of this hotel and won't stay again.

stayed 3 nights in october for first time hotel full of older people who come back again and again. Staff can be unfriendly unless you are one of the regular guests. Head Waiter/chef is a misery. Hotel rooms are either basic (sea view) or very nice (Teide view) if you upgrade, room smelled of stale smoke but clean
food okay if you eat early with being a buffet style. would not choose to stay here again
