Visited this hotel for ten days at the start of April and loved the slightly quirky nature of El Tope, including the furniture and staff. No trouble either with the majority of the guests who were German while the 120 steps or so up from the beach did not trouble us even though we are of advancing years. So why are there so many bad reviews of this hotel?
Everything was beautifully clean even though El Tope is no spring chicken while the entertainment was variable but not dreadful as some would have it. The best evening while we were there was the Saturday when there was a live group in the downstairs lounge. They performed songs right through the decades and were excellent, yet from the start to the end there were no more than 16 guests there at any one time.
Not being swimming people we were amused by the noticeboard that indicated no more than 25 should be in the pool at any one time. The most we counted were four! The pool is circular and small by modern standards and everyone went round the same way just like goldfish.
The pool area was never packed and it was refreshing to note there were no early towels visible.
Now to the food. Breakfasts were fine, but the evening fare left a little to be desired.
We eat about 7.30, ie the second session, and that presented a problem - the 6pm gannets had stripped the table bare. It was noticeable that the restaurant staff were often under pressure and refilling the trays was a slow process. Often, too, an original item on the food notices above the trays failed to be replenished. My partner also described the sweet selection as one of the poorest among the many hotels we have visited.
What we must remember though is that this is largely a budget hotel at the time we visited and I believe all in all we got value for money for the price we paid.
