“Can't wait to return”
Reviewed 22 June 2014 via mobile

My wife and I discovered this hotel by accident just before our honeymoon having been moved from the Casablanca apartments to this hotel due to planned building works.

We were so pleased we were moved. We instantly fell in love with everything about this hotel. Cracking views over the resort and of Mt Teide.

We have been married 8 years and celebrated this year by returning in May with our two young girls (aged 2 & 4). This was our 6th visit.

The hotel were accommodating when it came to our children and supplied the correct beds we needed and a high chair was always provided at meal times.

There was always plenty of choice for the girls to eat at meal times.

We plan to return after 10 years of marriage. Just love the hotel and resort so much.

Thank you to the all staff, especially Jose the waiter who still remembers us from our 1st stay.

We have just returned from a weeks holiday at this hotel.I last stayed here over 25 years ago
and the hotel is as good as I remember. We arrived late at night and after a quick check in we
found a tray with cold meats and cheese and salad in the room together with juice and water,a
very nice welcome. We had a large sea view room with balcony and a huge bathroom. This suited us perfectly as we do not like the hot afternoon sun.The entire hotel is spotless.

Breakfast and dinner are buffet style, which we do not usually like, but there was a very good
selection of dishes, and we really enjoyed the food.We also found the local red wine to be good.

All the staff are friendly and helpful an we hope to return soon. The only downside are the steps
down to the seafront.

Room Tip: The sea view rooms are cooler in the afternoon.

Decent enough hotel...in that I cannot complain about anything.
Contacted them prior to ensure we had a specific type of room and received a helpful and very courteous reply.
Furnishings etc are a little dated and tired by modern standards.
Food is plentiful and choice/quality excellent for this sort of holiday ( all buffet) Sparkling wine with breakfast on Sunday! Only criticism I personally had was the tasty blue cheese wasnt on every night!
Very courteous and cheerful restaurant staff and whole place is kept very clean. Minor point that in comparison, maybe, the reception and some of the pool bar staff could be more friendly at times.
Small pool but as the hotel is occupied in the main by the 'older' travellers, it was never full and there was no problem with getting a sun bed.
Drink prices are good compared to other hotels v local bars in other resorts.
For myself...I didnt necessarily want the noise and bustle of Las Americas, but I did find La Cruz rather quiet. Town is a 10 minute walk down around 120 steps....and back up!
Do not go to the (I think ) Western bar on promenade as drinks are twice what you can pay in smaller quieter bars ( even with the same view). Nice tapas in small bar opposite the 'english' pub and another little street bar between church and sea front (the one which hands out flyers at end of the street).
My overall rating for El Tope reflects where maybe it should be in relation to more up to date hotels but if you want just an enjoyable and relaxing week, then I do not think you will be disappointed

Room Tip: If you want sun in the room in the morning ask for the sea view side....or mountain view for the a...

We stayed at the Gran Hotel El Tope from the 2nd May until what should have been the 13th May. The check in was very quick and efficient, which was good as had arrived late at night .We were pleasantly suprised to find cold salad trays and drinks in our room when we got there, which were very nicely laid out. The room itself was very nice, clean and large. We overlooked Mount Teide with a side view of the sea, so best of both worlds. The staff were excellent, whether it be the restuarant, bar of reception, we always found them extremely pleasant and always willing to help. My Mother-In-Law, who is 82, had an unfortunate fall on our 5th day there and broke her hip, she was taken to the Belvue Hospital where she was operated on, during this time the staff at the hotel went out their way to help as much as possible, we had to extend our stay in Tenerife and they had no hesitation in allowing us to remain in our rooms until we were able to rearange our flights back home. My Father-In-law, who is 87, was very much the centre of attention from all the staff, on the day of our departure back home we had a very late flight, they told us to keep room until last minute to allow him to rest before the long journey home.
On the hotel itself, we found it a lovely hotel, food was good, always something different for us to choose from each day, even though we had to pay for our drinks, we found the prices very reasonable and the drinks very large!!!! I must admit if I could have reached the cockerels who decided that 4am every morning was the time for us to wake up, I would have happily strangled them, there were a few houses accross from us that had dogs belonging to them, unfortunately if 1 barked then every dog in the surronding area joined in!! Overall I thouroughly enjoyed my time at El Tope and I would return.

E-mailed ahead and asked for mountain view so as to have the sun late afternoon. Not let down, stayed in Room 301 which overlooked the pool and to the right was the sea view and to the left was the mountain view.
Checked in quickly, arrived 10pm and waiting in our room was a salad, water, fruit juice and an ice bucket with a bottle of sparkling cava. Really nice touch.
Half board was breakfast 7.30am to 10.30am and dinner was 6.30pm to 9.30pm. Plenty of choice at both sittings, you would have to be really fussy not to enjoy their variety of food on offer at either meal time. Waiting staff were pleasant and we always waited to be shown a set table. Once they got to know where you liked sitting they tried to take you to these seats.
Pool not the biggest but plenty of sunbeds and the pool attendant followed you where you wanted to sit with soft mattresses, parasol and even clean towels.
Our room was a good size with excellent balcony where we enjoyed our bottle of sparking cava (supermarket in shopping centre 1.50 euros) kept ice cold in our own small fridge. Large bathroom with overhead shower in the bath and hair drier on the wall. Clean towels each day if you left the dirty ones in the bath and our room was tidied each day.
Large reception area. The bar was located downstairs and there was a different show every night where the local artists plied their trade. The one's that we did go to we enjoyed. (Molly Malones downtown is definitely worth a visit where owner Desi Reid is good craic). Also downstairs there is a gym, sauna and Jacuzzi where you had to pay 5 euros.
Only downside is the walk down to the shopping centre and onto the promenade. Once down there its quite nice(beach is small with fine black sand). Plenty of shops and restaurants for the ladies to browse around, (nearly always seats or benches for the men to wait nearby). In the main square plenty of taxis around to take you home for around 3 euros (I would recommend this as it is quite a steep hill to climb).
Booked a trip which took you towards Mount Teide, Masca, Guarachico and another stop to look at a Dragon tree. Worth a look for 38 euros each we paid from 8am to 5pm (no meal included).
We both really enjoyed our stay. Not a bad word I can say about all the staff, always pleasant and helped us with all we wanted from start to finish. Just before we left at 4pm my wife discovered she left the plug adaptor back in our room which we vacated at 12 noon. She mentioned it to the receptionist and as we went to collect our bags from the luggage room an hour later the maid had left it for us.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the pool also have a sea and mountain view. At night close the balcony door and pu...

We enjoyed staying in Puerto de la Cruz. The Hotel El Tope we thought was very good. Rooms slightly tired but nothing to worry about. The food we thought was generally of a reasonable quality and variety. The only complaint was that the food was rarely hot. The waiters were very good.
There are about 120 steps down to the road or a walk down a steep slope if you prefer. It did not trouble us during the day but if you felt like a short stroll by the coast or in town in the evening then the steps tended to put you off. You can walk up hill , not very far to the main road and bus stop. There was entertainment in the hotel 6 nights out of seven. The pool area is lovely very clean and many flowers. Also small but pleasant gardens in which to sit. There seemed to be very few English people in the hotel. Many Germans but no issues over sun loungers there was always plenty. A pool attendant brought mattresses pool towels and parasols.

Not ideal for children although there were a few staying.
Woken every morning by noisy cockerels crowing nearby , not the fault of the hotel but rather annoying

We stayed 11 nights and visited La Laguna - well worth a visit. Oratava also good . Santa Cruz if you want to shop.
We would stay at the hotel again if visiting Puerto de la Cruz .

Room Tip: We chose a mountain view room which was very good . We were on the fifth floor and also had a view o...
