An absolute paradise 10/10. Probably the best hotel I have ever stayed in and I have been travelling for more than 50 years.

Room Tip: Two doubles together is the best option

Booked an all in package with Thomas cook for a week at the Botanico, having stayed at various hotels over the years in Puerto de la Cruz ( Tenerife playa, San Felipe, Atlantis, Parque San Antonio, Las Aguilas). Botanico is a totally different exeperience, no queing for meals, spotlessly clean, super friendly staff, fantastic gardens and spa plus a choice of 3 restaurants. Although the package only included breakfast I ended up dining in the hotel restaurants most nights. An added attraction was a 'behind the scenes' guided tour of the kitchens, banqueting suite and spa filter room! Another nice touch was a bottle of cava and a cake in the room for my birthday! Will be back for another visit soon! Ray Jones

Room Tip: All views seem to be good either looking towards Teide or to the resort

done it and liked it and what is more will certainly be doing it again.

Our holiday started as soon as we entered the Botanico. We were presented with a refreshing fruit cocktail before registering. This was a very nice touch bearing in mind that the transfer from the airport takes a good hour. The first view of the reception area simply tells you that it has been worth it. The internet videos simply do not bring out the real flavour of the luxury that awaits you.

The location of the Botanico in the La Paz district (a very select area) is excellent. It is close to the local bus service stops, a variety of restaurants to meet all tastes and price, doctors dentists, supermarkets and pleasant boutiques. If the local area does not fulfill ones wishes the hotel has a gratis bus shuttle service to and from the centre of Puerto. The Botanico is not overlooked by any highrise hotels or buildigs as are the majority of other hotels in Puerto. Furthermore there are no busy roads next to the hotel and so one is not disturbed by traffic noise, either by day or night.

The public areas are extemely well appointed with a large selection of Canarien, Oriental and European works of art and artifices to enjoy as one relaxes in the spacious well furnished rooms. These rooms are recorated weekly with an absolutely magnificant presentation of fresh flowers.

The bedrooms are spacious and well furnished. The beds are extremely comfortable and there is a choice of pillows to meet ones sleeping habits. We found this to be of great importance because one spends approximately 30% of ones holiday in bed. The balconies are large and have spectacular views. The bathrooms are large and have the usual facilities and the rooms are air conditioned and have an "insect preventor" sliding door to the balcony should one wish to sleep wth an open door (we did not encounter any such invaders during our stay) for fresh air. Needless to say the bedrooms are cleaned to a very high standard and if it is your wish the bedlinen would be changed daily. The hotel supplies bath robes and so ther is no need to fill ones luggage with such bulky items. The room service presents one with a daily programme of what is to take place the following day and a bedtime Praline.

The hotel offers 4 restaurants serving spanish, italien, oriental and international food. We booked only a room with breakfast thus allowing flexibility to either eat in house, locally or to " attempt to loose a pound or two" by going without having sampled the delicacies. Although we considered that the prices for drinks were rather high one has a free coice. The self service breakfast buffet is large and offers a choice to meet all tastes. Breakfast can be taken inside or weather permitting ouside by the pool. A very pleasant touch was that the tables are decorated with fresh roses.

The Botanico puts the official Botanical gardens (situated just across the road to shame. The variety of trees, plants flowers and shrubs is fantastic. The gardens are maintained to a very high standard and apart from the lake with a magnificant collection of coi carp there are numerous corners where one can relax and enjoy ones holiday in peace and quiet.

The Oriental Spa Garden simply takes you to another world. The walkway has a magical effect on you as the entrance doors open automatically before you are greeted by the Spa staff. The ranges of treatments for which one has unfotunately has to pay for leaves you refreshed and "years younger". There are whirl pools and other facilities that are free. The team is highly proessional. There are also daily "light keep fit exercises" for anyone who wishes to join in.

Last but by no means least come the staff. We found all members of staff in not only the restaurants, the gardens, but also pool areas etc to be most friendly and helpful. The majority had a good command of english and german and needless to say spanish. It is always good practice to test ones schoolboy linguistic talents whilst on holiday "una cerveca por favour" and unfortunately "la quenta por favor". The hotel director and general manager, a Senor Perez did not, as has been our experience in many hotels, hide himself away in his office but made himself visable keeping a eye on matters to ensure that everything was functioning as one would expect. likewise the public Relations officer, a Mrs Alba left no stones unturned in order to ensure that the requested information was forthcoming and was an absolute treasure when it came to making suggestions about trips, Canarian Delicacies (she clearly points out to avoid "Gofio").

We have written alot for there is simply so many good things to lure one back again to the Botanico. Yes having seen it and liked we are certainly going to do it again as we have done so for the last five years.

Room Tip: Third or fourth floor with a view of the pool and Teide

I have a rule never to return to hotels as there are so many different places to experience in the world. We visited Botanico in 2010 and it was so good that the thought of returning has gnawed away ever since ... so I am writing this review at the hotel having broken my rule and returned ... and I am so glad I did!

The hotel is a fabulous 5 star affair with friendly and attentive staff. The breakfast buffet is amongst the best I've had anywhere. Lovely relaxing bar area for a nightcap after eating out in one of the fab local restaurants.

But .... the real thing here is the spa .... it is a fabulous haven of relaxation - outdoor pool, jacuzzi and hot tub - indoor waterbeds, heated pool and jacuzzi and thermal circuit of ice room, sauna, laconium, Turkish bath, aromatherapy room and various types of showers. This is all included in your stay and you have unlimited use of the facilities - bliss!

If you love Spa's then you have to visit here!

On Teneriffe, fine hotels are few and most accommodations consist of enormous concrete resorts that cater to mass market tourism, the very hallmark of this volcanic island since more than 40 years.

In Puerta de la Cruz, one of the larger cities on the island, I stayed several nights at the five star Hotel Botanica. The Botanica is a member of the hotel marketing association "leading hotels of the world". It lies above the city center in a quiet neighborhood. You can reach the a small black sand beach in about 15 minutes of walking (downhill).

You'll find plenty of the mandatory ingredients that define an old school luxury hotel at the Botanica; uniformed doormen, shiny marble floors, thick Burgundy red carpets, gold framed wall decorations, several restaurants, a piano bar, spa, etc, etc. No surprises here.

The hotel was completely renovated 1994 and as far as I could tell, there has been few, if any, substantial efforts to modernize the property since then.

In essence, the hotel seems to have fallen into a kind of beauty sleep and no one (guests or management) seem to notice how tired the hotel actually feels. There is no ambiance, no tangible sense of being in the midst of one of the world's most luxurious hotels. On the contrary. The atmosphere is more reminiscent of a cruise ship decorated sometime in the late 1980s. Lots of bling, but very little soul.

The hotel's many returning patrons, whom on average are in their late 60s or early 70s, are like ghosts shuffling around the lobby in almost blindingly white robes and slippers and very focused on maintaining traction on the spotlessly polished marble floor.

The Botanica's facade (like most other concrete structures on Teneriffe) is hideously unattractive and unworthy of a hotel with this position. Here's where I would start my renovation scheme. A massive undertaking, yes. But so necessary.

So, is there anything positive to say, you ask? Well, the gardens and pool areas are well-kept and genuinely beautiful. A big thumbs up is therefor in order here.

From what I understand, the spa is an increasingly important part of the hotel's offerings. I never tried it, but it looked nice and seemed popular among the robe people. The gym was small but had a fairly good variety of (mostly older) training machines and other weigh lifting equipment.

The Botanica's breakfast buffé is nothing less than grandiose and the small army of attentive waiters were mostly friendly.

Once again though, I longed for some real enthusiasm and a dash or two of that world famous Spanish charm. Instead of smiling, service-minded restaurant professionals, I felt as if I were eating among factory workers whom were just trying to get through their shift, one guest and one empty plate at a time.

Despite the outdated interior decor, our room was still extremely comfortable and spacious (an Ambassador suite). The view over Puerto de la Cruz below and Atlantic beyond was spectacular. But why plastic chairs and tables on the balcony?

Finally, our last meal was at the hotel's Thai restaurant, aptly named, The Oriental.

Apparently, one of the chefs had once worked at the The Mandarin Bangkok Oriental (see my separate review for this hotel). If so, he was definitely off duty the night we ate there.

First of all, the concept of combining fine dining and Thai cuisine is contradictory. Thai food is too inclusive to be treated so exclusively. Eating food in Thailand is a social happening, not a fine dining experience. Ok, I've eaten at a few places that can pull this off, such as Face in Bangkok, where they add a scrumptious twist to traditional dishes.

Eating a poorly prepared Tom Ka Gai in a plush dining room just felt plain silly. Particularly since it was one of the most expensive Thai dishes I have ever ordered.

On the positive side, the service was extraordinarily good here (the Maître d' is American).

The Hotel Botanica is definitely one of the nicest hotels on Teneriffe. But, that really says more about the other hotels on the island then about The Botanica per ce. I am quite certain my review will go unnoticed by the hotel's management or that if they reply, it will be a standard issue response.

Still, I hope they read it, ponder my thoughts and take action on some of the more serious aspects that I focused on. So that I can return one day and find a shiny five star hotel with a new look, a new attitude and ultimately, a bright future.

Room Tip: Choose a room with an ocean view!

We last stayed in this hotel 6 years ago (although the hotel did not seem to have this on their records) and again were not disappointed. Overall, the service was impeccable and unobtrusive and the room, on the 4th floor, was first class. Lovely to sit out on the balcony and relax. The maid(s) cleaned the room and bathroom to a very high standard.

A couple of minor quibbles! Why were all the best tables for breakfast reserved every day no matter what time one went there? As a result we were always shunted into the salon which could be rather cold first thing. Like other previous reviewers, we also found the "double" bed tended to drift apart during the night.

There are TITSA bus stops going both ways just outside the hotel driveway on the main road which open up several exciting journeys using the cut price Bono card which can be purchased from the paper shop across the road from the hotel at a cost of 12 or 30 euros. And in the process of such travel, one encounters amusing and helpful interactions with the locals. But beware, the queuing system favoured by the British at bus stops does not apply in Tenerife. We journeyed to San Pedro and walked back along the coast. Another day we walked along the coast to El Rincon then took the bus back to Puerto via La Oratava. Also, went to Icod, Garachico and Buenavista.

We found several delightful places to eat nearby and in the old town area.

No hesitation in recommending the Botanico for a delightful break but would agree the clientele tends towards the older generation which suited us well.

Room Tip: Rooms looking across the pool area to the mountains/Teide are very pleasant

Dear Guest,

We wish to thank you for your review on Tripadvisor and are delighted that you enjoyed your stay at our hotel. With pleasure we read the aspects that we must improve and that will help to improve our services.

Concerning the breakfast tables; we have to reserve some tables to customers with limited mobility or disabilities. Regarding the situation on the double beds, we appreciate the suggestion and because it is a recurring situation, we will analyse it and solve it as best as posible.

We look forward to welcoming you back on your next stay.

. . . then this is possibly the place for you. Having visited the island 40 years ago and vowed never to return, we received an irresistible invitation and found ourselves winging our way back squashed on to a completely packed Easyjet flight. The newer of the two airports catering to the package end of things is in the South of the island. To reach Puerto de la Cruz on sensible roads requires a desolate drive through a blasted coastal landscape getting ever grimmer passing ribbon developments all the way with a scattering of power plants and factories. Puerto de la Cruz looks far from promising and the hotel itself is disappointingly set back from the coast in amongst the suburbs. BUT - have faith. The staff are all wonderful and couldn't be more helpful. Pillows are excellent, beds very comfortable, pools good and the food surprisingly good, too. And they have managed to amass a wonderful collection of local art over the years which is liberally scattered throughout. There are some terrific paintings. The hotel is more or less next to the Botanical Gardens which are charming (very small) and opposite the entrance are several little restaurants if you feel like eating out. We tried The Magnolia - people a delight and the food very good. We had a happy time. This is not a great hotel - dull building, uninteresting location - but it's a very good hotel, largely because of the lovely staff. If you have a good reason to go to Tenerife then do stay here. But we did leave vowing not to return - again.
