“Our second stay here - we'll go back!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 May 2009

We have just spent a week at the Botanico (our second visit) and thoroughly enjoyed it. Can't agree with the negative reviews on the site - we had a great time. The staff in particular are marvellous - very helpful and friendly and nothing is too much trouble. The receptionist Pino summed it up when she said - " 'not possible' is not a phrase we use here at Botanico" - this was when we asked to change our half board arrangement for one night which was not straightforward for her to do but she sorted it out with a smile. Yes - it is a traditional hotel - not the most modern decor in the world - but it was well kept and seemed to be regularly refurbished. As it was a quiet time of year they had closed one of the floors and it was all being decorated.

We had one of the standard rooms overlooking the pool and Mount Teide. The rooms are a decent size, all with a small balcony. The only thing we would say about the room is that the bathroom was looking a little tired - probably the height of sophistication 15 years ago but now needs a bit of updating. If you go at a quiet time of year as we did I wouldn't recommend shelling out for a suite or penthouse - you don't really need the facilities of a private terrace with sunbeds as you will always be able to get space round the pool or in the spa garden. However, you might consider the penthouses if you are there in peak season.

We particularly enjoyed the spa. The thermal circuit is included (unlike other places we have stayed which charge an arm and a leg to use it) and was well-maintained. We found the sauna quite hot enough!

We also got very good service from the Concierge and Reception - Toni was a joy - always greeted us like long-lost friends whenever we went to ask something!

We like the town and went down there both in the daytime and in the evening. There are quite a few good places to eat, although some are very touristy - but there are also good places very hear the hotel. Tucan (mentioned in a previous review) is great, also Bacco.

We ate in the hotel's 3 different restaurants for 3 nights and enjoyed all of them. Prices were about what we expected for a 5 star hotel. The breakfasts are very good - probably the best we have experienced. A huge buffet, with cook-to-order as well. And the bonus of very hot water in thermos pots brought to you so you could have a good cuppa!

Overall a very nice place to stay with excellent service.

My husbadn and I stayed ta this hotel March/April 2007- should have put my review on ages ago- anyway we went for two weeks on half board. The hotel is set in Puerto de la Cruz towards the back of the resort near the botanical gardens. It is nicely furnished and the rooms were pleasant. Our balcony overlooked the main pool area and gardens towards Mount Teidi, which you could see on a clear day. The gardens are beautifully kept with a large pond with fish and swans. There were largish bird cages at the back with various tropical birds in them- not sure about this. The main pool also had a pool bar which served snacks (expensive and not that good) in the day. The hotel offered a buffet breakfast which was good with plenty of choice. There was an Italian, an Oriental, and an International restaurant in the hotel and being on half board we could eat at any of the three for dinner which was great. There was also a spa area which had a lovely quieter pool for adults only and a very quiet gym. There was also an indoor pool at the spa and various treatments rooms eg sauna and steam room etc. which guests could use. You only paid for actual treatments eg massages. The hotel is rated as a five star which I suppose it is, it is quite elegant but I did find some of the staff unhelpful and unfriendly and the prices for drinks in the bar on the high side. It took approx 20 mins to walk down to the centre of Puerto and a bit longer to walk back up! There was a hotel shuttle bus during the day. Puerto is quite spanish, they were digging up alot of the resort when we were there but it must be completed now. There are lots of cafes, restaurants and shops and a lovely lido right on the seafront. There is a beach of dark sand, but the lido is nicer. We hired a car for a week but Tenerife is big and so to get to the southern resorts it takes about an hour and the roads are big busy roads. Weather was mixed, it can be in the north because of Mount Teidi.

Just spent a week here.

The great things:
- spa (as everyone else also notes)
- Ambassador suite (large, great bathroom, lovely balcony)

Terrible:
- service / quality standards especially in catering. Do not go if you have any pretensions to liking / understanding wine for example
- staff were not particularly friendly, poor level of english spoken by reception in particular for a 5* hotel
- prices, some were ludicrous - we ordered a CHILD'S portion of spagetti from room service and were charged Euro 19!

Also, not necessarily terrrible, but I would definitely not recommend with children. We knew there were no specific kids activities (which is fine) but clientele is pretty elderly / intolerant of even very mild noise / anyone moving more quickly than you can get around with a zimmer frame!

We had a week for a holiday and wanted to spoil ourselves. We spend a lot on our holidays but don't mind if the quality is good. We have stayed at quite a few of the Leading Hotels of the World (including the Cape Grace in South Africa, Al Maha in Dubai, The Grove near Watford) so thought this would be good. How wrong we were.

On arrival our hearts sank. It was like stepping back into a 3 star UK hotel in the 80s. Slap bang on a main road, and it reminded us of Butlins! We had booked a penthouse room and wasted our money. The room was between two of the enormous suites and the terrace was tiny in comparison. Dated, cramped and tired (the room, not us!) and the shower was pathetic - you needed to run around in it to get wet. There was a hairdryer in the bathroom but no socket near a mirror anywhere for any other appliances (i.e. my straighteners!) so had to buy a mirror in the local Spar and rig up a "dressing table" in the bedroom. That was dangerous - see our photo of the 5 star wiring in our room. The air conditioning wouldn't budge from 26.5 so we spoke to reception about it to be told that EVERY room is set at that throughout the hotel and if we wanted it changed it had to be done by the technical department! Needless to say, it didn't happen so we slept with the patio doors open every night and got bitten instead of too hot!

The weather was awful so we booked a car for a couple of days and found some sun, and also had a death defying (but beautiful) drive to Masca. We walked down to the "beach" in Puerto de la Cruz and it was vile but the old part of town near the church was much nicer. We ate in The Tucan one night and it was a delight but didn't eat in the hotel at night as thought it would be too depressing as the attitude throughout the hotel, from both staff and guests, is so old and lacking in any vitality.

The spa was nice but deserted. As someone else has commented, the saunas were not very hot (bit like the cooked breakfast!). We had the extremely expensive "Spa experience for two" and if you're up for a laugh then go for it! Two therapists, one male and one female, 40 ish, poor English. On arrival we were handed paper "tangas" to put on and then it all kicked off! Hubby led to the jacuzzi bath whilst I had to climb on what I thought was a mortuary slab to have an autopsy performed on me. I was hosed, soaped, scrubbed and then we were both sat in a minute shower cubicle/steam room. Then he got the slab treatment and I got the bath. It kept moving around like this for two and a half hours and could best be described as hilariously tense as opposed to relaxing!

So there you are. If you have money to burn and live in a time warp, off you go! We certainly won't be seeing you there!

Hotel Botanico is that rarest of things these days - a hotel that treats you as an individual.

I can't believe anyone can really criticise the hotel given the amazing price. I challenge anyone to find another 5* Deluxe, Leading Hotel of the World at the same price as the Botanico in any other sunshine destination in Europe. If they were charging £250 a night I might be less surprised but they are not.

The breakfast buffet is extensive and caters for just about any individual requirement you may have. Once you get to know the waiters (by about day 2 in my experience), they treat you like long lost friends and anticipate what you need as soon as you arrive. The bar staff are also exceptionally receptive if you take the time to talk to them and again you'll feel at home.

The pool area is really beautiful and the provision of pool facilities - towels, sun loungers etc. is excellent. The Oriental Garden - the hotel's spa facility is out of this world. It is amongst the best spa facilities I have ever seen - on par with the spa at the Mandarin Oriental in Hong Kong.

Of course no hotel is perfect but the Botanico is incredible value for money for a hotel in its class. There are few hotels that will make you feel as comfortable and welcome. Take time to talk to the Spanish staff and you be treated like an old friend

We have just spent a week over Christmas here and found the Hotel and Staff to be excellent. Must have missed the "tired" "outdated" furnishings, carpets etc. as we thought it was immaculate. Breakfast was excellent - great choice of food (as well as Bucks Fiz!) and relaxed. We took advantage of the hot sunny weather and ate breakfast outside every day. Rooms very comfortable clean and a good size. We heard mutterings that the evening meals were expensive and not that good but did not sample them. We had lunch and dinner at one of the many restaurants and bars 100/200 metres or so away from the hotel - very good quality and cheap even with the £/Euro complication and occasionally in the town. Free mini-bus provided by hotel into the town (last one into town - 7.40 p.m. I think). A taxi cost 3.50 euros. You will not want to walk back up the hill from the Town!! No excessively noisy guests and the few children that were there were really well behaved with caring parents.
Overall an excellent week in a very comfortable, well presented hotel (lucky perhaps with the weather - 7 days non stop sunshine) and we will definitely return soon.

Christmas 2008 at the Botanico. 1st impression very good. But thats just it, it looks good. Underneath the surface - not up to scratch. Don't book half board. You are a captive audience. Whilst the food looks good its tasteless. I see a review now I'm back (too late) about a restaurant thats opened just across the road. It looked great. Sadly I never went in. Other reviews say the hotels worn, thats picky. We had an Ambassador Suite - brilliant. Except it overlooked the back of the hotel (sea view) and was plauged by dog barking from an adjacent villa (75metres away). Management did move us but it took the morning with some tension. They actually got the police round who solved the problem. Maybe I shouldnt have insisted on the move. Spa is fantastic. Nearly faultless - where's the drinking water? Why isnt there a juice bar - they could make money out of that? Restaurants look fantastic, so does the food but I've never been to any of the LHOW where they could ruin even the most simplest of dishes. Creme brulee like scrambled egg with no brulee. Plates in La Parilla served so hot the foods still (over)cooking on them. They need to "get back to basics" and cook simple good food. If you like your white wine cold, forget it. The bottle will go in an ice bucket with huge cubes and air. No contact between the cold and the bottle. Really good things: fresh roses in the room (a dozen appeared one day - was that the only one we didn't complain?), breakfast - omelette freshly cooked, turn down service (only better at the Ritz in London), suite quality (eg; 2 huge plasma's, dining table, comortable settee's), soaps etc in bathroom, and; THE BEST - atmosphere of relaxation with everyone wandering around in bathrobes down to the spa. Posh for dinner but during the day; no make-up, no hairdo's, no fancy clothes. Just realaxation.
You can spend the day next to a pool and have no screaming kids, no smoking, no mobiles, just like minded individuals enjoying the place. There is a pool for families thats fantastic, its the main pool. Mostly the familes there made sure the tranquility of the gardens around it and the hotel were not spoiled. Important as 50% of the rooms overlook it. If you go, look for a discount - any other Leading Hotel Of the World I've ever stayed in would deliver more "bang for your buck".
