I stayed at the hotel for one week. The hotel is very luxurious and we were made to feel very welcome, everywhere we went, the staff greeted us with hellos and smiles. The grounds are very beautiful, with two black swans swimming in the large pond, terrapins and Japanese coi carp swimming towards you hoping you will give them some bread, but then I turned the corner to find 6 cages filled with two parrots per cage. What a sorry sight indeed. As I looked into their cages all they had was a rope and a box to sleep in and a rotten old twig which was propably put their when King Carlos visited the hotel a few months ago. I realised that the hotel might be 5 star but their cages were most definately not even worth a star. These birds are so intelligent and need mental stimulation. I immediately complained and told the hotel they had pictures of parrots on the walls in the bedroom, ornaments everywhere, but what did they do for the parrots! The manager said that a Vet came every day to look at them (complete lie) and I was not to worry. I think she realised I knew she was lying, as she them said I could put some things into their cages. I went out and bought about £150 worth of things for them and they instantly came alive, it was increadible. The gardener who feeds them came and helped me, but said that the hotel would be very accomodating whilst i was staying at the hotel, but as soon as I left the toys would be removed! The parrots are owned by the Loro Parque (apparently he owns the hotel Botanico too) and so my next task is to speak to the guy responsible for the parrots at the Hotel - Mathias Rheinschreidt who is based at the Loro Parque. So basically, if you stay at this hotel, please go and see the Parrots and complain to the Manageress Rocio Cibran that their cages dont have enough toys inside to keep them occupied and most of all - keep them happy. x

If you're coming here for peace and quiet, like we did, it's not guaranteed! We stayed here last year and had a huge noise problem on our first night , caused by the hotel owner but never apologised for by him. We were woken late at night by music so loud it sounded as if it was coming from within our (rather ordinary) room. I rang down to reception and was given the impression it must be from a nearby nightclub because they sounded very harrassed but said they couldn't do anything about it.

Eventually, in the early hours, I went down to reception to find another irate guest there who told me the noise was from a party in the grounds and the hotel owner was one of the party guests. This was confirmed by the young lad on reception who said all he could do was note our room number. We expected an apology the next day - at least a note under our door - but there was no contact from the management so we complained to our tour rep. In the end we received a rather insulting half bottle of cava in our room and a note saying "Please accept this on behalf of the owner" but the owner who had shown such disdain for his guests didn't bother himself with an actual apology. Not a 5 star experience.

My husband and I (in our early to mid 40s) were in desperate need of a holiday. We had read other reviews on trip advisor before we travelled and felt safe in the knowledge that we had made a good choice. However, the hotel, grounds, spa and general location far excelled our expectations.
We had read that the food in the hotel restaurants was excellent and it was. We also read about a local restaurant called TUCAN a short walk away which was much cheaper than the hotel and every bit as good. In fact it was so outstanding we ate there a couple of times and would have gone more if we had found it sooner as no directions had been given. Here they are ... Turn immediately left at the front steps of the hotel following the road round to the left, turn right onto the main road then 2nd left by the dentist. It's just on that corner. I promise you won't regret it.
The spa facilities were excellent and prices for treatments I felt were much cheaper than the UK. Because of the indoor facilities, including a third pool, it didn't matter whether we had sun or rain - the sun did shine though. We returned feeling totally destressed and having had an amazing holiday. We will certainly return, if not later in the year, then early next year. ENJOY!!!!!

We have just come back from a very enjoyable holiday at the Botanico. Having stayed in a number of 5 star hotels that were entirely ordinary, we had few expectations. However the Botanico was a very comfortable, relaxed and friendly hotel with great service. The spa was excellent, the breakfasts by the pool superb and the staff were falling over themselves to help. The only negative was that we felt that the restaurants were overpriced for the standard of food we experienced.

We found this hotel throuh reading the reviews on TripAdvisor - we were looking for a really relaxing 7 day break in a smart hotel with almost guaranteed sun. On the whole we weren't disappointed.

Room: We contacted the Hotel direct and found we could get a penthouse suite for the same price as travel agents were charging for an Ambassador suite. The Penthouse suite was amazing - floor space of internal rooms and outside terrace extremely generous and kept very clean. The only surprise being a relatively small bathroom. We had intermittent problems with lack of hot or cold water, but the Hotel did respond quickly. The terrace area had a large canopy with table and chairs plus 2 loungers and a parasol. We lived out here! Advice from another report made us take our own travel kettle - we were really glad we did. There was no CD player in the suite but satellite TV had some English channels.

Food: We went b&b and feel this was the right choice for us. We found the breakfast buffet to be excellent, with a very wide range of anything you could possibly want for breakfast. The famous toaster mentioned elsewhere has not improved - the trick is to put your bread through twice! We only had 2 evening meals in the hotel. The Oriental restaurant was the better one and we would go back there again; note there is a dress code here, but this was not enforced. The second restaurant we ate in was ok but we were slightly alarmed to be served Smash potato - we thought it was a typo on the menu, but it was not! We had two room service meals which were relatively good value. We also used the Magnolia across the road and found it to be good value. There is a good Spar supermarket only 5 minutes walk down the hill, where we bought water & snacks - this was so useful.

The Spa: This is amazing. In many ways it's the reason to come here. Good range of free facilities (including Tai Chi classes) and very relaxing environment. We had difficulties however, booking some of the extra treatments due to staff illness and complicated rotas not being finalised, but what we had was superb and the Thai massage is a must!

Overall, the service in the hotel was generally good although sometimes lacked a little warmth, but we had a really great relaxing break.

Went here at the end Of October. I would say this was a "four and a half star" hotel. Best if I do this report in bullett points:

1. Breakfasts: Huge choice and finished at 10.30am so good for a lie in! However, outside, a great many of the clients smoked even at 8.30 in the morning. Off putting and they should allocate a space for the "outcasts" and let non smokers eat without being fumigated!

2. The main pool has no safety rail! You would expect this in Moscow but not in a 5 star, Leading Hotel of the World!

3. Some of the flower displays had not seen attention, it seems, for several years. Small point I know, but can you imagine a tatty flower display in the Dorchester?

4. Our meal in the Thai Restaurant was "OK" - nothing special. Overpriced certainly.

5. However... the SPA was just FAB! No children under 16, no smoking and no mobiles. Some started to smoke and mobiles did go off, rarely, but in true Basil Fawlty style, I put a stop to it immediately by getting the staff to sort it out. Only 3 years old and great to get away from all the hussle and bustle.

6. I found the Magnolia across the road disappointing Overpriced, Far too BRIGHT and the pianist had been to the Les Dawson School! Cringe making and you were always waiting for the next, frquent, bum note. Quite a laugh.

7. Some FAB restaurants in the town. The best Spanish one was the Regulo. Outstanding. And the Rosa de Bari. Stylish, lovely reasonably priced food. .

The hotel staff were polite and helpful especially Toni on reception.

The Gardens were lovely too. Well tended and a feature.

All in all, pretty good and I would go back. Good for oldies and honeymooners. Not at all for kids.

Hope you find this useful.

We stayed here for a week, 19-26 September 2006. I would say it is 5 star for facilities but quallity is not de luxe as described in Thomas Cook brochure and the general atmosphere is one of smug complacency with some guests and to some extent staff that nothing could possibly be better than this

LOCATION

Very nice resort, ideal for strolling/browsing, lots of little streets and shops but that adds to the fun. 20 minute walk to the town and seafront.

ROOMS

Standard room, good size, clean, not enough drawer space but apart from that fine. Shower had one of those silly glass screens so floor was always wet after a shower. Towels could have been a bit softer!

POOL

One main pool and a tiny kiddies pool. Not that may loungers really for the size of hotel and seems to cater more for the old with the provision of lots of chairs to sit in the sun in along one side of the pool. To be honest, not being disrespectful but some times at the main pool it looked like a nursing home and was so dull and quiet and you felt like you couldn't even talk let alone laugh or splash about in the pool.

SPA

Good - outdoor swimming pool, outdoor whirlpool, hot tub, indoor pool, can have massages, treatments etc (we didn't try them)

FOOD

Breakfast was good with a good range of things but a bit strange in that some days someone asked for your room number and some days not. Lunch - as it's a 5 star there isn't much range if you just want a snack i.e. sandwich. Why do they assume that we all want to eat a full meal at lunchtime? Better to get lunch from bars etc just outside hotel if you don't want much. Evening meal - we never had it as it was so expensive and someone said don't eat here. Lots of nice restaurants outside - Magnolia (opposite hotel), Tucan (hidden away only 10 mins away, turn left right outside hotel and keep left until come to main road. Turn right and Tucan is on left hand side of road just as the hill becomes a little steeper, Paco (turn left out of hotel onto main road, and it's down a bit on your left), La Cuadra in the town and Regulo in the town (get a taxi and just ask for the restaurant and they will take you there). Good food for reasonable price.

SERVICE

Staff a bit hit and miss...sometimes friendly. Their English not as good as I would have expected for a "leading hotel of the world". One thing that particularly annoyed us - in the lounge/bar one particular waiter would not let us have a cup of tea in there in our shorts at 5pm, but then on other days other waiters WOULD let us. Not as if we were wet or dirty or scruffy. And we had paid our money like everyone else (a lot of older people who frankly looked miserable most of the time).

So all in all a good hotel but snootiness got to me.
