“Great staff, shame about the food”
Reviewed 10 February 2013

First of all the good bits. We stayed here for about £400 half board in Jan/Feb 2013, the hotel including flights meant that this was a budget price hotel so I am not going to moan about every stain on the carpet or the lack of air conditioning. You really do get what you pay for. The rooms are standard and we didn't mind being on to the main road even though it is a bit noisy, so if you want peace ask for a back room. The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful and this is the hotel's strongest point, they allowed us to change to any other room we wanted when it was quiet and they also allowed a friend to change room to be near us. It is right next to the bus station, so easy travel to most destinations on the island from this central situation.
The only real drawback is the food. In all my travels I really haven't experienced anything quite like it although a friend said that it was like the food they had in Gambia twenty years ago. it really is bad quality and best to be avoided. You can find really cheap restaurants anywhere with much better quality than this.
We went half board but I would avoid it if I were you. We stayed for 14 nights and only ate there about four times at night and that was through necessity. Breakfast is ok enough, plenty of bread etc. It is such a shame that the hotel are not following up on the complaints about the food. Many people complained when we were there and it is clear from Trip Advisor that many have also experienced the same thing. After saying that I would return to this hotel but not eat there.

Room Tip: The main street is noisy, ask for a back room if you want peace and quiet

We stayed in Hotel Marte one week. When we booked, didn't expect too much, because the price was so low. As we arrived, the surprice was nice: hotel lounge, bar and restaurant were really neat and well kept, extremely clean everywhere.
Bar/lounge area was large, with nice comfortable furniture, free wi-fi was available.
Personnel was happy friendly people, making us feel welcome. Breakfast was fine, plenty of choice to enjoy and specially loved the fresh fruits. The restaurant staff (at breakfast & dinner) were so hardworking people, we were admiring their work morals, specially those couple of young men that were really doing the amount of work that usually a bunch of workers do,
-the hotel management are lucky they have found such treasures!
Also the people doing the cleaning were doing amazing job: we were totally content with our room cleaning and the whole hotel was perfectly clean, didn't see any dirt there the whole week.
Really well situated, bus station only 100 meters away, so good connections to other parts of the island. Lovely beach as near as couple of minutes walk away.
We highly recommend this hotel, perfect value for money.

We visited Puerto and stayed at the Marte Hotel at the beginning of January. Didn't expect much considering the amount of money we had spent on the accomodation (and the entire journey). The location is great, the staff is friendly but doesn't speak any english (at least it didn't at the time). My pigeon spanish was basically all we used to communicate with receptionists and other staff. Rooms are basic but clean. Some older gentleman (we supposed it was the owner, or owners father) was there at the lobby or in the restaurant all the time and used to greet everyone he met there. He even had a little chat with us the first morning after we arrived asking if everything was fine, how we're doing, something like that. In our oppinion, it contributed to some warm, family atmosphere one could feel there.
We noticed that there were many returning guests (mostly from German speaking countries and continental Spain).
If you are on tight budged but still want to avoid some crowded hostels or self catering accomodation this is a good alternative.

For the price, Hotel Marte was fine. The rooms were clean. Beds were ok, not good, not bad. We had booked a double bed room and when we arrived at the hotel to check in, they gave us our keys and didn't tell us at that time that they did not have what we had booked and that we could only have the room that they gave us with 2 single beds (Rm 403) They suggested that we change the next morning. In the am, we did not have any hot water for hours.....needless to say, it was a very cool shower that am. The only good thing that our next room (rm 118) had going for it, was that it had a double bed. This room was on the front of the hotel. The street was very noisy day and night, the TV didn't work, the room was very small.

Breakfast was fairly decent, but beware that the "juice" is awful......it is like powdered juice crystals mixed and have a little pulp added. Another downside, is that the gorgeous breakfast area in the courtyard allows smoking which is terrible when you are eating.

The hotel is dated, but clean. It is in a very decent location, just down from the bus station and a few blocks above the main town area.

Overall, for the small price that we paid for each night, it did the trick.

Take the time to go to Loro Parque (an amazing non-profit zoo and aquarium)

We will be back to Tenerife to go back to Loro Parque, check out the volcano and Siam water park.

Room Tip: Ask for one away from the front of the hotel.

Myself & my wife have just spent 9 days B&B in Hotel Marte. When we arrived they gave us a room so small you would have difficulty getting out of the 2 single beds. We rejected this room & were offered an Appartment on the roof which was much more acceptable at same price. It had a coffee maker, small 2 ring cooker & a fridge. No electric kettle.Breakfast was fruit, museli, yougarts & mostly cooked meats with tomatoes. You got your own coffee from machines & also hot water to make tea with your own tea bag. It was OK. Most visitors in the Hotel were German or Spanish with very few UK or Irish staying. Staff had little or no english.. TV was the same with only German or Spanish stations with BBC World the only english station. Its on a narrow one way street so there is a bid of traffic noise but it dident bother us.We had the Dinner one night which was terrible. Chicken legs,Chips & things that looked like fish fingers. We dident go back. To hire a car was another problem as there was very little parking around the hotel. You had to use a car park near the sea front @ euro 3 per day.Hotel Marte was very clean with towels been changed every day. A very small swimming pool is on the roof that nobody uses. Weather wasent great for the 9 days we stayed so mayby that was the reason. I would guess this hotel was built in the seventies but was well maintained It was very suitable for walkers who were away all day from hotel as Bar was not serviced except at week ends and only on tab. Wi Fi was free but only in Hotel Lobby. If it rained most visitors went to the bar & surfed the net to ease the boredom .Lots of Bars & restaurants in the area so lots of choice.Good value for the money

Well I had realistic expectations due to the price but unfortunately the hotel still disappointed.

Major bonus points are the location (access to everything in Puerto de la Cruz) and the awesome suntrap roof terrace which nooone else seemed to use (I would have liked to have met people up there and had some banter).

The food was just awful. Had brekkie on the first day but the staple is garlic bread which I love but maybe better for later in the day. Next 2 mornings just had coffee and banana. Dinner can only be described as slop :-( As I had paid for half board I decided to grin and bear it again on my last night but got there with an hour to go and all the food had been cleared away.

Rooms very basic which I expected but really oppressive and floor dirty. On plus side hot water whenever you need it and cleaning staff made bed nicely.

I think that the ultimate problem for me was that the place had no atmosphere. Noone drank in the bar, sat on the roof terrace etc. Not great for a sole traveller.

But in terms of price I'm not sure you could beat it (for a reason though).

Hotel Marte is located in the centre of Puerto de la Cruz, on a one-way street close to the main bus station & plazas, and 10 mins walk from the sea. This means it's great for accessing the centre of town, but also means there can be a lot of noise from the street at night and from the bus station opposite, and there is very little chance of parking nearby.

The hotel is very clean, and staff generally efficient & helpful. However it is very dated - it felt like stepping back into the 70s! I had to ask to change rooms after a sleepless first night with noise from the corridors, the lift, the kitchens below, a wastepipe by my window, etc, and the 2nd room was just as small and dingey as the first, with very little natural light and no views. The TV didn't work in my first room either. The rooms are basic - no toiletries, hairdryers, minibar or tea/coffee facilities - and the beds were very small. Breakfast is basic and not the best quality (the 'juice' and coffee were terrible) but plentiful. The pool on the roof terrace is much smaller than the photos imply and not heated.

All-in-all, this hotel is clean and very good value-for-money. It would be fine for people who intend to spend all day & evening, but I personally would have hated to spend any more time than absolutely necessary in the room as I found it quite depressing. You get what you pay for, and to me this is a very basic 3-star.

Tips for parking - you can park for free in a large car park by the harbour (as a single female I didn't feel too comfortable there after dark as it isn't well-lit and isn't overlooked by anything). The only alternative is to drive around for 20-30 mins to find an on-street parking place - the nearest one I found was 15 mins walk away from the hotel. Also only park in parking spaces in the town with white lines, not the ones with yellow lines - otherwise you'll get a parking ticket!

Room Tip: rooms higher up in the building will be further away from street & bus station noise. Rooms 8xx...
