No welcome at reception from two mature non multi lingual receptionist, although functional, but had no real interest, kept interrupting check in by answering phones.
Service at pool side restaurant, (dining room closed ) for dinner at pool side, very bad, given wrong menus, nobody bothered to re fill our wine glasses or ask us if we enjoyed our meal, WHICH WE DID, didn't bother to clear dirty plates away until the next course arrived. There seemed to be confusion at the restaurant order area, with only one youngish lady with short white hair knowing what she was doing, the others just walked around with tunnel vision, with I do not care attitude.
At one point, what appeared to be a manager attended to this area and simply shrugged his shoulder and walked off at the apparent confusion. He was distracted by paying loads of attention to the 3 or 4 corporate events being held (15 July). We were promised musical entertainment, it lasted from 9.45 - 10.30, they must have been tired, so the musicians returned to the bar and were given sandwiches and drinks after their exhausting performance.
The reception, bar and restaurant toilets are a ridiculous distance from any of these areas, with very few signs. If you have a mobility problem the entrance steps are a bit of a problem, as three well known elderly American Musician, playing in the City Auditorium found and when they sat at the bar and asked for some food, this was about 11.15pm after their performance, were told by the service staff in no un certain terms to go to the restaurant beside the pool and order, impossible distance for them and steps of course, one of the other guests offered to go and did get it for them !!!! Although most of the bar staff were excellent, the only ones !
Such a disappointment, beautiful hotel, on the morning of our departure I asked to speak to an English speaking manager and was told there where know available, whereupon I would have raised these issues and NOT resorted to using this very public medium.
All things start at the top and only managers can and should be held responsibility for the staff attitude and training.
I am not a serial grumbler, I have now retired on this Island and would like other visitors to be treated to the service they are entitled to expect and have paid for.

Dear Walter,

Although we sincerely regret reading that your stay at our IBEROSTAR Grand Hotel Mencey fell short of your expectations, we are grateful for the time you spent to share your feedback on your overall holiday experience among us; we certainly believe that there is always room for improvement and your constructive critics will help us identify areas that could use more attention to detail.

Please accept our sincerest apologies if you experienced any inconsistency in our service; as you well say, our restaurant Los Menceyes is closed during the summer season and meals are served at our Los Laureles pool restaurant instead; The menus however are the Los Menceyes ones and our waiting staff knows them quite well, this is why we were surprised to read your comments on service but have shared them with our Maître for information and of course, if necessary, for improvement.

During the summer months we ensure an entertainment program every evening, the show you refer to is a special dance actuation programmed for Tuesdays and is the only one that lasts one hour, every other night we ensure live music during three hours.

We were also very surprised to read your comments on the American musicians staying at our hotel as we didn’t receive any kind of complaint from their side.

Lastly, our management team is available from Monday to Sunday and present at every meal by the pool restaurant, for future occasions we strongly encourage you to contact them at any time to point out any service imperfection; they will be enchanted to assist you.

On the other hand, we thank you for your positive comments on our restaurant; the passion for gastronomy being one of the prime pillars of our company, our talented Chefs strive to surprise our guests with a high standard gastronomy and the possibility to savor the best of the local cuisine as well as the finest international delights.

Last but not least, we thank you for your wonderful comments on service which of course have been shared with the entire bar team. It is always a great source of motivation for our staff to hear that our guests appreciated their services and attention to detail.

Our main commitment is to offer the best vacation to our guests, based on the service provided by professionals and the delivery of high quality products, so we do hope we will have the opportunity to change your first impression about our service and turn it into a wonderful holiday experience with IBEROSTAR in the near future.

One of the very best hotel experience i've ever had! We spent almost one week there with my wife this summer. Beautiful place, well located and great service! You also have one very tasty tapas restaurant just in front of the hotel .... very recomended as well ... try croquetas de pescado ... awesome! Swimingpool comes with sea water (nice).
My advice for tenerife ... stay in the north and rent a car to discover all the beautiful places the island has to offer, particulary el teide, los gigantes and bajamar!!! In a few words, the Mencey is highly recomended, we will come back without a second thought if going to Tenerife again!

This hotel has been nicely renovated with a few truly great features. It's location near the city centre, it's beautiful (salt water) pool and the modern lighting design in the classic public areas are three of the main highlights.

We booked a junior suite. Spacious and with two balcony doors, it feels airy when hot (did not need to use the airco). But when it's colder, it feels a bit empty. Let's say it's minimalistic. The beds are ok. The bathroom also is spacious and does have all the amenities. But we are not a fan of the open plan layout. When using the bathroom at night the whole room will be in full light. The balconies are all connected and only separated by an open iron partition. Good for the overall architecture, but no privacy. Junior suites might be large, but the garden view rooms will offer a more quit location. Our room was looking over the main street and garbage collection was early in the morning. Wifi for free.

The dining room is grand, but the breakfast served lacks finesse and the selection is a bit poor for a five star. Still it is ok.

Plenty transportation options. Taxis are affordable and there is a bus stop next to the hotel. Taxi to the airport is about Euro 20,00 and to the bus station (and El Corte Ingles shopping) about Euro 4,00.

Iberostar is proud of it's new and hip uniforms for it's staff. It looks indeed nice on the models used in the company brochure. But it looks cheap when you do not have a body of an athlete to go with it. The older Spanish gentleman, trained in a classic hotel tradition, just look like clowns now.

Worst experience was the front desk. Check in, without a cue, took 20 minutes. They let me print my boarding passes behind the frontdesk but just left me, leaving me to be the only person behind the desk for 15 minutes. They did not know about activities during the National Day but they were sure there would be no activities in the park in front of the hotel. But our room actual was near the park where that night a rock concert was organized till 6 am. Front desk also sent us to the wrong busstop. This staff is in bad need of being retrained. Concierge is better. Ask them, at least when they are there.

The (salt water) pool is large and well designed with nice pool towels and pool beds. On the down site: we asked for a banana shake and we got a hot milk banana flavored drink. The lady asked if we would like to have some water to go with it. Just to find out the water was by no means for free. Disappointing gesture. Tip for the management: work on the routing (and signposting) from the guest rooms to the pool and back. It's really not easy to find right way to walk.

Hotel Mencey was A Luxury Collection Hotel in the past. Now it is part of Iberostar. And that is a pity. All the failures would not have occurred when SPG, Gran Melia or InterContinental would have been in charge. It could have been great, but it now only is just good.

This hotel is a nice stopover for a day or two. But by no means it will offer you a resort experience you might have come for to Tenerife (and the hotel is not pretending to be a resort). It's nice to have diner in Santa Cruz, but the city is in a deep economical crisis. Do not expect nice shops. Most important, the weather in the south is better with more sun, less rain and higher temperatures.

Lovely hotel - clean rooms, friendly and helpful staff, lovely salt water swimming pool.

Great location, walking distance to the town, nice walk through the park.

Can't comment on the food as we stayed room only and went out for breakfast and dinner. The bar area is nice, we had a couple of drinks there.

Would definitely recommend this hotel and stay there again. It's not too touristy, it's quite a quiet place to go in Tenerife compared to some of the other towns.

We are still here! Leaving on 30th June.
Checked in at lunch time and was greeted by Domingo who relieved us of our luggage. Then fetched two glasses of champagne whilst Salvador took care of the booking and informed us that our room had been upgraded as we were celebrating our anniversary. Our meal that evening from the al la carte menu was excellent.. Another complimentary bottle was served at dinner along with
A celebration cake for dessert. The hotel is quite contemporary, with a wonderful sophisticated dinning room. The staff who have waited on us are all so friendly and very efficient.
Some names I recall, Teresa, Jose, Veronica. Good choice of food at breakfast buffet.
The rooms are cleaned to a high standard, with beds turned down of an evening and the complimentary chocolate on the pillow, which my husband has yet to realise, seeing as I get to the room first!
I appreciate that being June, which is generally much quieter for hotels here, the service may be better and quicker than in the much busier period between December and March.however,
We have two more nights here, and I am confident that they will be just as good as the start of our break. Would definitely recommend this hotel and hope to return soon.

Room Tip: We were upgraded to room with a sea and city view on the top floor with a corner balcony 466

My partner and I recently stayed at the Iberostar in Santa Cruz. As it was our first holiday together we spent quite a lot of money and wanted a real luxury experience. Prior to our holiday I contacted Iberostar four or five times using the message service on their website but heard nothing back from them which was a bit disappointing and didn't really put the hotel into a good light for us.

However, upon arrival we were so pleased...the hotel foyer is absolutely stunning, the grounds are perfectly maintained and the staff are all lovely and really helpful.

The pool was one of our favourite places as it was peaceful, beautiful and scorching! The only downside was that the hotel often hosts weddings and big parties and on one particular day there were at least 15 children running riot around the grounds which did ruin the atmosphere to an extent. I appreciate they are at a wedding but it is quite irritating when on a relaxing break!!

The blonde receptionist (I think she was called Suzanne?) was absolutely brilliant. Her English was perfect and she was really helpful in finding us car hire information, information regarding day trips to the Tiede and to the waterparks.

Our room was lovely (although no kettle which is a nightmare for Brits!! - but we ordered coffee in the morning (4 euro for a big pot and some baked goods) ) with a balcony, MASSIVE bed, separate dressing area and bathroom with separate toilet. It was peaceful and the decor was classic and elegant. The only downfall was that the aircon didn't seem to work too well so we were constantly boiling.

The only downfall in the hotel was the Casino. On our second to last evening we went down looking to spend the 150 euros we had leftover but were met by a really rude receptionist who looked us up and down and told us to go and get changed. Once in the casino we were greeted by grumpy members of staff who did not make us feel welcome and did not have good English (I know we should probably have spoken more Spanish but this is a 5* hotel). We felt very unwelcome so just spent the free tokens we were given on check-in and spent our money elsewhere! Very disappointed.

Overall, the hotel is stunning, i'm so pleased we spent a little extra and got such a beautiful hotel. There is no beach which was a massive shame but you can get to one via bus. There is a stunning (and I mean STUNNING) perfectly maintained park 1 minute walk from the hotel with water features. We enjoyed many picnics here - it was a real highlight for me. There aren't many top end restaurants and bars but lots of little coffee shops and cheaper restaurants. I would definitely advise you to hire a car as they are very cheap (around £30 for 3 days) as lots of the tourist attractions and the beach are a long way away by public transport (and quite expensive - it cost us £40 for a round trip to Siam Park!!)
