“A Beautiful City”
Reviewed 19 May 2013

Santander is a beautiful city surrounded on three sides by the sea. You can spend the morning on a vast sandy beach and the afternoon touring the Cantabrian mountains. It is modern and clean and more temperate than the "costas".

“Santander”
Reviewed 23 April 2013 via mobile

This is such an elegant city. After travelling with Brittany Ferries we disembarked at Santander and spent some time on the sea front having coffee and generally enjoying the beautiful place. It was exciting seeing all the grand boats coming in and we explored the Cathedral which we found a little disappointing as it lacked beauty and grandeur. Travelling away from the city inland we were enchanted by its magnificent and very verdant scenery.

“City sightseeing bus in Santander”
Reviewed 12 July 2012

If you are returning on the Brittany Ferry it is well worth getting to the port several hours before departure. If you miss the ferry the next one is in 2 days time. You can check in from 09.30 and park on the dock for free. Your cabin ticket has a bar code on it which allows you to come and go through a turnstile gate. A short walk along the front brings you to the tourist information office opposite the Santandar Bank HQ. A hop on hop off tourist bus operates from here every 30 minutes and cost 14 euros. We got on and off at several stops. The bus was always on time and Santander is very nice. We then sat in the small park opposite the port and had lunch before going back to our car just before boarding.

“Beautiful Beaches and Bodegas”
Reviewed 9 July 2012

When in the north of Spain, visit the seaside locale of Santander (capital city of Cantabria). The coastline is a long expanse of soft sandy beach including some more gentle bay like areas for children and families. During the tide shifts there is the possibility for some great snorkling where mullet fish, schools of tiny neons, and bottom dwelling sealife are visible. The beaches are packed with families during the sunshine filled days and quiet and contemplative during the frequent summer rains. For the Americans who are not used to this, there is an openmindedness about sunbathing topless which appears to be part of the culture and not something to feel uncomfortable about. At night, there are bodegas in town and in the little communities, where for a couple of euro, one can try a spanish wine with a small tapa. This is not to be missed and where the community meets at night. If you are not into nightclubs with noisy youth, there is still a bodega that will meet your needs, often in the small communities off the beach. I recommend hiring a self-catering apartment, with a kitchen which will give you an opportunity to shop with the locals and try some recipes out for your self. Be aware that Santander is hilly so those with accessability issues might have a hard time getting around by foot. It is truly a Spanish seaside town with most of the tourists coming from Spain itself and a welcome relief from the overly populated towns of the south filled with foreign tourists. I heartly recommend Santander for the best taste of Spain in the summer!

“If you like markets...”
Reviewed 24 May 2012

The city's food market is very impressive: huge variety of fish and seafood downstairs; meats, both fresh and processed and of various origins, as well as fruits, vegetables, condiments and the like upstairs.
