Eurostars Hotel Real

We loved the Hotel Real in Santander when we stayed there in September 2012, but i can imagine it wouldn't be everyones cup of tea. I kept thinking of that Agatha Christie novel "Bertrams Hotel" the whole time i was there. It was a lovely Hotel , but as someone said in a previous review, it was as if it was stuck in a timewarp. With an old fashioned lift complete with wooden shutter doors ! Having said that it was my cup of tea and i loved my stay there .We had a fabulous room , extrememly comfortable and spacious with a breathtaking view of the Beach! I couldnt fault it ! The breakfast room and bar were lovely and the waiter/bar service was very good.
For me the location was also perfect , it was a short walk down to the sea front and to the Magdalena Peninsula.
I cant wait to go back to Santander and to the Hotel Real someday !

Excellent hotel, great service, great location. The only con is that being an old building (a beautiful building), it's not as quiet, you can hear conversations happening in the aisles or floors cracking when sleeping.

Hotel Real reminds me of five stars hotels the way they were forty years ago. Very elegant.
But more importantly for me was the quality of the staff. Every single member was professional, courteous and friendly. It was the combination of professionalism and friendliness that made our stay so special. The hotel is a ten minute walk to the city's casino and major beaches, and a twenty minute walk to the Santander's bustling city centre. I can not imagine visiting Santander and staying anywhere else.

Room Tip: Some rooms have balconies and face the sea. Ours had neither, and while still a nice room, in the f...

Hotel Real is one those lovely old buildings with high, ornate ceilings & a period lift--complete with cushioned seat! There are modern ones as well, but we liked to pretend we were in a set of "Poirot", so used the posh one :-) It was bad luck that we were only there for one night, as the weather was poor. The view would have been even more beautiful had it been fine. The hotel is positioned on a high hill overlooking the bay, with views of the hills all round. We had dinner in the restaurant, which was superb--not just the food, but the service was flawless. Even my husband, who is a bit of a Michael Winner, enjoyed it, and would like to return. Praise indeed! Our breakfast also was great, served in their lower ground floor self-service restaurant, with doors opening onto the terrace garden. Again it was sad that we had to leave quickly due to the long drive we had that day, as a more leisurely morning repast & stroll in the gardens would have been perfection.

We wanted somewhere special for our first night in Spain on a trip across the Picos and down to Rodrigo. The Real is impressive as you climb the tree lined drive to the ostentatious front steps and a uniformed man whisks your bags away (a bit disconcerting for my wife). Should we tip? Not used to such treatment there was no obvious expectation and we only had 10€ so we didn't and no one snubbed us.
We asked for twin beds or a huge bed (sleep being very important after 20 Hours on the ferry) and they delivered! Huge bed, spacious room overlooking Playa Magdelena and we think the view is lovely. Yes it's a bit over blown but they retain the poshness of a classy hotel yet don't make it uncomfortable for the less monied of us. The lounge, dining room and terrace are stunning but only buy something if money really is no object to you: cup of tea? 4.5€. Breakfast? 24€ per person! Bit rich for us but Santander has plenty to offer so don't be put off the Real. 119€ for the room is a lot for Spain but not compared to over pricing in the UK and we loved it.
I think you have to approach the Real with confidence and enjoy the old fashioned grandeur. We didn't even mind our door bell (we had a door bell) being rung at 10pm by a "senior" uniformed chamber maid offering (as far as I could tell with my non existent Spanish) to open our bed...turn it down? I guess! We declined as our room was a sty anyway.

Hotel Real is in a wonderful location overlooking the bay of Santander and has a good deal of old world charm. My room was clean and comfortable though not large. I had breakfast which was good quality but the service was patchy. if you order tea, you get a pot of tea and jug of milk to yourself but if you order coffee, you have to attract the attention of a member of staff who comes and pours a cup. This system does not work when things are busy. The ground floor lounge areas and terrace are past their best and could do with being refurbished. The major thing going for this hotel is its location. If it was situated in the centre of the city, it would seem pretty average.

They have not chucked out their chintz, nor even their old cathode ray tv tubes. This place is old school - all about status rather than charm for the gold fillinged old reprobates who order drink after drink from unsmiling staff. Think very large dark wardrobes, keys attached to fobs heavy enough to be cluedo murder instruments, an orange marble bathroom that can only be described as "death squad orange". Of course there is no pool and the off-site spa is really for elderly ex-third world dictators seeking something sweet smelling. When I checked out an extra 60 EUR had been added to my bill. A "mistake" corrected without much grace. Mr Assad will love it here
