“Pretty Good - but don't expect a smile!”
Reviewed 19 August 2012 via mobile

This is the second Silken hotel I have stayed in on this trip, and both had the same rude and seemingly annoyed staff. Every time we walked into the hotel it was almost as though they were avoiding eye contact - not so much as an hola. They have a computer set up in the lobby with restaurant recommendations and nearby attractions so they don't have to talk to you. The hotel is clean, quiet and a great location. Parking is expensive and it's easier just to park for free on the street. Wifi is good. The breakfast is a little chaotic when the hotel is full, and they stopped replenishing hot food 40 mins before it closed, despite the large crowd.

We had a fantastic stay in Santander at the rio silken, the rooms were a bit on the small side, but kept very clean. The service was fantastic, and although not all the staff spoke English, they were always friendly and helpful. It was my 2 year old sons first holiday, and he was made do welcome by all the staff, even though he can be a bit of a force!!
The only down side was that they haven't got a pool, it rained a couple of days, and it would have been nice to have an inside option. It couldn't have been in a better position though, 10 mins from the Palace and across the road from the beach and a lovely restaurant.

2nd Silken hotel of the holiday & good first impression. Great location overlooking the beach & nice atmosphere in the area. Checkin was quick and efficient, friendly & welcoming staff. Allocated room on the 5th floor overlooking the back so no sea view but very quiet as not traffic noise. Room was large but dated. The pictures on the wall were very old fashioned & looked like they had been there since the hotel opened. Beds were clean & comfortable. Bathroom was large, slightly more modern & all very clean with a big tub. No flatscreen tv's in this hotel room yet. Small fridge for your water & juice.

Breakfast however was a little disappointing after the magnificent breakfast at the Silken over in San Sebastian. It was fine but just a little limited, no big choices just a few rolls & pastries, cereals & juices & a small amount of fruits & cold cuts/cheeses. It was acceptable but had good freshly squeezed orange juice. Considering they are both 4 *, I thought the offering would be similar. The hotel is fine & the location is great so it would be wonderful if Silken Hoteles would spend some money restoring & modernising the hotel as worthy & fitting of the location. The sea & beach are minutes from your room & that is excellent reason enough to stay at the price.

Although you are staying in Santander, the hotel had an air of a beach hotel & you did not feel you were in an city/urban location. There is a Lupa supermarket just around the corner for your provisions. Great Regma ice cream shop on the front opposite the Casino & the promenade is just lovely. Parking was not a problem, however could be in high season & street parking was free, even managed to get a spot outside the hotel one night. Lots of buses can take you down to Santander & very frequent but tend to finish early at 10.30/11 at night. Taxi back was only 5 euro. Do try La Conveniente in town for good but bad for you fried delights (no salad here) & great value also within walking from the Rio was Balneario La Magdalena a fab seafood cafe/restaurant right on the beach by the sea, not pretentious just good food.

Great location near the sea but in general, bad experience. Awful service starting from the reception desk, unprofessional, sloppy and rude. The "do not disturb" sign on the door was also ignored by the staff. The rooms are in need of refurbishment since they are clearly outdated. Bathroom was large but unfortunately in my case, not properly cleaned. First time in a Silken but probably my last. If you are looking for a hotel near the beach there are better options in the area.

Stayed for two nights on a short break with Britany Ferry's. We found the hotel to be clean and the room was very nice with a great view overlooking the sea.
The breakfast was continental but they did have bacon and scrambled eggs to keep us Brits happy. Having said that the choice of food would have been enough for me without the hot dishes.
We did not eat at the Hotel in the evening so cannot comment about that. The only reason being that we enjoyed the 20 minute walk into the town centre where there was a number of restaurants to choose from.
If you do not speak Spanish you may have a problem ordering what you want, we did. My wife is a vegetarian and does not eat fish either, she ended up with tuna on her salad! This was soon taken care of after some sign language.
We would certainly stay there again.

Room Tip: Most rooms have a sea view but a higher floor would give you a better view.

I have never stayed in a place where I felt that the reception staff was so rude. In the 4 or 5 people we encountered at the front desk I don't think one smiled at us once. They seemed to be put off by having to assist you. Told them on arrival we were their for the convention and asked where the convention center was. He gave us a blank look though we know he spoke English as if to say, "figure it out yourself". Thankfully we did discover it was only a 10 minute walk from the hotel. Similar cold reception from every other person at the front desk we encountered. Two people were friendly and kind in the 5 days we were there. First was the housekeeper and the second was a worker that came to assist us with a problem with our safe and to get us the soap and toileteries they forgot to leave in the bathroom.
The hotel is located across from the beach and we had a nice view from our room. Street is busy and traffic noise overpowered the sound of the ocean if the window was open. A few options for dining nearby. Never did dine at the hotel as we didn't think they deserved more money that what we were paying them for the rooms. Stains on the carpet in the room were a little off-putting.
