“A gem in the middle of nowhere”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 May 2014 via mobile

We just started our motorcycle tour of Andalusia. Having to pick up the bike in Madrid, we looked for a midway hotel and quite blindly chose La Caminera. We booked a "deal" with massage and spa. A great deal. We just came back from the spa after a relaxing massage (very good) and hydra spa tour (a must). The room is very well appointed with modern furniture, a fantastic king size bed and a beautifully equipped bathroom. Internet wifi is excellent and we are enjoying every minute. While out of the way, it is definitely worth the detour. Bravo to the management and staff for this great gem.

An out-of-the-way hotel. You have to get off the four-lane highway and go through a little town (watch out for the LH turn signposted to the hotel between two houses) and then along a lane which is almost, but not quite, a track, worrying that a big delivery lorry will be coming in the opposite direction.

You seem to be in the middle of nowhere - surely there can't be a luxury hotel here?

Then suddenly you see it, on the hilltop ahead. It's still 4 or 5 km away, but finally you come to the driveway that sweeps up to the top of the hill and a magnificently-sited hotel.

This hotel has all the trimmings - golf course, spa - that makes it very popular as a week-end getaway for the Madrileños looking for a luxury break.

Luxury it certainly is.

I have been to hotels claiming 5 stars that would be pushed to be 3-and-a-half. But this is the real thing.

Public spaces are gorgeous. There is an inner courtyard with groups of sofas and chairs inside shady tents - like something out of the Arabian Nights. A terrace by the large pool with breath-taking views and comfy loungers or tables and chairs inside gazebos.

Bedroom was enormous, as was the bed - 2 metres wide. One of the most comfortable mattresses ever slept on. TV not only with all the satellite channels, but also internet on screen. More-than-ample wardrobe space, both hanging and drawers. In fact I wish I had enough clothes to fill them!

The bathroom was the same size as some hotel bedrooms. It had a large jacuzzi bath with a shower too. Twin washbasins, with good-sized bottles of branded toiletries - Tous. A separate lavatory and bidet enclosure. Large towels, proper bath sheets, soft and fluffy. And a shower cubicle.

The shower cubicle!

Overall the shower cubicle on its own was about the size of my entire en-suite at home. It had three separate sections. One had a "telephone-style" hand-held shower head. Another had a large rain-shower shower head. And the third section had jets of water coming out on two sides from knee to shoulder height. You could have showered a gaggle of children there all at the same time.

The food was extremely good. It was also pricey. The set menu was 55 Euros, but had no choice. We went a la carte, and 3 starters, one main course, two puds, half a bottle of wine plus a bottle of water for the teetotaller came to 145 Euros. We could have eaten for less from the bar menu, but the quality, the cooking, the presentation were all outstanding, so we didn't regret it.

The breakfast buffet at first sight seems disappointing - just toast, cereal and pastries with juice and coffee. That's because breakfast is a la carte. They bring you a list, but basically, anything they actually have in the kitchen, they will cook or serve you. They were even suggesting other things, trying to encourage us to have more.

An absolute delight.

The whole stay was a delight, and by booking on-line midweek, very good value at 118 Euros per night for the room, breakfast and 90 minute spa session.

TIP 1 Mid week is best. Quieter, and much much cheaper

TIP 2: Their satnav reference wouldn't go into my Gamin, presumably because it was referencing a spot in the middle of the golf course, off the roads. The satnav reference for the entrance to the hotel driveway is: N 38 39.977 , W 003 18.958 You need this!

TIP 3 It is very much worth a detour to stay at this hotel if travelling through Spain. An experience not to be missed.

Every time we need to find some peace,we go to this quiet hotel with a very nice spa and a lovely swimming pool overlooking the typical Manchego fields, with the olive trees and the grape vines .It's a lovely place to get away from the stress of our daily lives. And of course if you go there you have to try the wine, the cheese and the olive oil served at the restaurant.....apart from other tasty dishes.

Spent the night at la caminera with my family. Had 5 rooms with kids included. Hotel, pool, restaurant spa, all excellent. Service is wonky and bar food is hideously $$$$. Better to taken in room service than eat at bar. Chatted with chef about ordering from room service menu at dinner.
Restaurant excellent although lacking many basics. Out of 3 or 4 items on menu, as well as wines. Centre patio for cocktails is lovely but bar was out of scotch, no mint for mojitos, and no cream for coffee as back of the house don't allow bar staff into kitchen after hours. Inexperienced staff although very friendly and accommodating. Was able to get my kids into spa hour from 2-3 while adults lunching.

My previous review is valid except they do now have the spa reception manned and most likely enforce children's hour. We had the spa to ourselves this time and it was heaven. The views from the spa and actually from most parts of the hotel are spectacular.

The hotel was very quiet, good for us but not for business, I hope this hotel stays open. We tried to help with this by dining in the very expensive restaurant. I don't recall it being quite so pricy last time.

Breakfast was great, although there was no food laid out you can ask for anything, eggs, bacon, salmon, fruit etc, no need to be shy. They have gluten free bread that you can ask for.

We will for sure return. Can't be beat on price €99 for the night including spa access and breakfast. €82 for dinner included 2 mains, 1 side, wine and water. Yes expensive but they have to make some money somehow.

This five start hotel and spa is around a 2 1/2 hour drive from Madrid and while it is located in the middle of no where, the surrounding villages and towns are beautiful.

We had a toddler with us so the children's room was excellent as was the kids hour at the spa. In previous reviews there was a concern about kids at the spa - worry not, the times are rigidly enforced.

The room was fantastic. We booked a junior suite, although a large superior room would probably have been fine from what I saw of it.

The food was excellent, although they are missing a more reasonably priced menu between the cafe and the restaurant - both are expensive (although good enough to make it worth it), it's just that there is no option if you want something lighter don't want to spend €60 on lunch.

Service was great also, however you are in the middle of know where so if you stay here you are eating here!

Spa was great also. All in all a nice place to visit if you are touring the region.

I really liked the hotel, the decor, fantastic spread for breakfast and really good restaurant. A ffew small things would make it even better. 1. replace the blanket on the bed with a duvet - most hotels outside of spain now have this, i wish spain would catch up. 2. if the room is supposed to have a king bed in it then it should not have 2 mattresses stuck , the rest of the worl has managed to have king size mattresses - again spain needs to catch up. 3. the water in jet pool in the spa needs to be much hotter. 4. someone needs to enforce childrens hour so that grown ups can get some peace in the spa otherwise this is a 5 star hotel with a water park not a spa! I would stay here again, it's really good value for 5 star with spa and breakfast included for just 109 euro per night.
