The hotel is a little hard to get to, but well worth the effort. It is so authentic to the region and in the heart of Toledo. The hotel staff was very friendly. The downstairs area is out of this world. It reminded me of Don Quixote! They have an outstanding souvenir shop attached to the hotel.

We stayed at this hotel in May with a coach company, the location is very good at the top of a slight hill just 5 minutes from the centrel square Zocodover. The room we occupied was on the front of the hotel overlooking the street, the room was lovely and clean. We were half board and the food was very typical of the area, very rustic, but plenty, the breakfast was also very plentiful but the waiters were not up to scratch, running around like headless chickens, they didnt seem to know what to do, very poor service as the Spanish are usually excellent. But overall a good hotel.

Room Tip: Overlooking the square

A terrific location but try for a room at the back and on an upper floor to get the view.
Super staff; excellent breakfast; full of tour trippers but all oldish and refined. Rooms spacious and comfortable with lovely beds. Front rooms look on street and can be noisy. I was in a tour party and perhaps the food is tailored to that.
Most of the party found the food in the evening poor. Unless you're on a package eat out.
the air conditioning is fairly ineffective.

Room Tip: Rooms at back have view

Stayed in the Alfonso VI for a week in early May 2012. Part of a group. It's quite a large hotel with 3 floors of rooms, although looks a bit tired, is in good condition. Our room and the public areas were meticulously clean. The room overlooked the main street on the 3rd floor with balcony to the main street (hence the review title, apologies) and we needed the shutters closed at night to ensure sleep.

The double bed was, as expected, 2 single beds shoved together, but were comfortable enough. Room was spacious, as was bathroom and a quality shower. Plenty of wardrobe space too. Air conditioning was essential as weather was very warm in evenings.

The staff were friendkly but didn't speak much English (there again, I don't speak much Spanish!) and were helpful enough when there was a power cut one evening. Breakfast seemed a bit of a problem, particularly if it was busy. Most mornings we had to clear a table and find new cutlery ourselves and only once did we get tea / coffee. There was a Fawlty Towers feel to breakfast with waiters running around but to no obvious purpose. The breakfast itself was fine, continental and plenty of it for the most part.

We dined in the hotel each night. Cold vegetables with hot meat dishes were a surprise and the fried vegtables turned out to be a plate of peas. Generally OK though, you get what you pay for.

Despite what it claims, the hotel does not have a bar. It looks like it was mothballed some time ago. The "bar" is actually a public bar along the street. Seems crazy to me as they are losing business - the guests I spoke to all said they would have had a pre / post dinner drink in the hotel bar had there been one, instead of heading out to one of the nearby bars in town.

The hotel lift has a bit of a mind of its own and holds max 4. So if a tour party is on the move, you'll be using the stairs.

As for Toledo, great place, recommend the Cathedral, Alcazar and if you're energetic enough, a walk round the walls / river is particularly rewarding. The town is quite quiet, a few nice bars and restaurants, and a bus service to get you around if necessary. Plaza Zocodover is main square for watching the world go by, with a couple of bars and a Macdonalds (!!), but there are better bars e.g the student bar in Plaza St Justin - where the free tapas equates to lunch!

Finally the weather - average daytime temperature was about 36 degrees which was very hot by British standards so it's sun hats and sun tan cream.

Overall an enjoyable stay. We ventured to other towns and had a day in Madrid as I reckon you can do the sights of Toledo in 3 days.

Room Tip: Face the street - great views down town but may get a bit noisy

This hotel meets my expectation for a 4 star hotel in OLD Toledo. The room is spacious for 3 and the value for money is fantastic. Admitedly, the furniture and TV are a bit tired, but the beds are VERY confortable and bathroom is perfect. We have not been down for breakfast yet but my rreasonable reate includes it as well. The TV's are not flat screen and the only english channel is the bbc. Wifi is free, and since I am not here to watch TV its all quite ok. the location is fenomenal as you can walk to the plaza in 3 minutes. Life is good here in toledo after getting pickpocketed in Mardid. I would stay here again and recommend to my friends for GREAT value, friendly staff and location

Room Tip: location of room doesnt matter so much, price is what matters

Alfonso VI is just fine. Fantastic location almost touching the Alcazar. The hotel also has good food. That being said, it's a little like getting stuck at the Elks Lodge during a weekend long Shriner's convention. You'll be the only one there who didn't arrive by tour bus and the downstairs is dominated by what can best be described as a medieval Denny's. But as I say, this hotel will neither make or break your time in Toledo. It's just fine and the location is worth all the rest.

We're just home from a visit to Toledo - the most fabulous city with layer upon layer of history and culture. Alfonso VI is located on the highest point of the city, right next to the Alcazar with shops, restaurants, public transport all on the doorstep. It was spotlessly clean and the food was really good (breakfasts were ok, and the one dinner we ate there was very good). The room decor was typically Castillian - rather heavy and dark in appearance, which suited the ambience. The decor of the lounge, breakfast room and dining room all appeared rather tired and dated to the extent that they were almost endearingly kitsch! We had a very quiet room at the back of the hotel and slept really well, though fellow travellers found rooms at the front extremely noisy at the weekend. The desk staff were charming and couldn't have been more helpful; other staff were pleasant and courteous. Having said all this, I don't really think it justified four stars.

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room with a view
