Description: The Hostal del Cardenal is located in an 18th century Toledo palace that has been converted into a three star hostel. The hostel���s restaurant, in an attractive setting surrounded by gardens, offers traditional Spanish cooking, featuring roast suckling pig and lamb cooked in traditional Castilian style in a wood fired oven, and Toledo-style partridge casserole. Desserts include the marzipans and ���marquesitas��� (small pastries) that are typical of the Toledo region. There is a special area set aside for children���s games and in the summer the terrace is a great spot to enjoy a meal with friends.

Alot of travel guides rave about this restaurant and it's speciality "roast suckling pig". We cannot imagine what they are talking abouit. It is a very lovely decor but the wait staff is unfriendly and the food cannot stand up to what most people can cook at home.

The wait staff was very unfriendly, even arrogant. The salad had "canned" asparagus of all things and was very ordinary and bland.
The roast suckling pig was also highly overrated. If you want a great one, try Latte di Luna in Pienza, Italy. We tried some local assorted sweets for desert and that was two peices of two items - both not worth the trouble. For over 100 euro per couple, just go to McDonalds 20 times and eat better

Very traditional classy restaurant. Good food, hovering service. They are receptive to visitor's quirks. We sat near one table where a couple ordered the staff around and demanded that the meal be structured precisely as they expected. The staff complied with no problems. Worth seeking out. The fact that the hotel is on the edge of the old city of Toledo is an advantage if you are not staying within the walls.

Toledo seems to get very busy and touristic and noisy - and you so much would like to have the luxury of a good spanish meal served by professional waiters in a pleasant and peaceful garden?

Sounds like difficult to get? But if you walk down to Paseo de Recaredo 24 to the Hacienda del Cardenal, you shall get exactly that in a restaurant-hotel which is surrounded by the original citywalls from the arab-era (year 1000).

In the late April we basked in the sun in the beautiful garden of this restaurant, admiring the old trees and listening to the fountains. Good food (try the cochinillo) and nice surroundings. We were not very happy with our wine, but the maitre immediately took action to satisfy us.

And when you want to get back to the hurlum of Toledo, there is the long moving staircase right next to the restaurant to take you and your full stomach back up in a couple of minutes.

The suckling pig is cooked in a wood burning oven and delicious. Equally great was the sea bass and garlic soup served with egg. The hotel is an ancient palace. It is well worth seeing the garden.

This is a fairly elegant restaurant in a charmingly renovated old building, specializing in specialties of the region, particularly suckling pig. There was no one else in the place when we were there, so we had waiters hovering all over, but it was in November after all.
