“A miracle of the 11th century”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 April 2014

To be able to see the artistry of craftsmen who frescoes the walls and ceilings of this small chapel within the church is one of th wonders of the world hidden in Northern Spain. Let it remain so for centuries to come.

A wonderful and historycal building. Take care with the time to "siesta", or you won't visit it. Nice place and little stores around.

“Stunning Frescos”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 November 2013

There are two parts to this visit: the Basilica, which is free, but not much to see, and the Panteon, which requires an admission fee, but it is absolutely worth it. We went here after we had a lukewarm reaction to the Cathedral - beautiful, no doubt - but it felt very familiar. However, the ceiling frescos in the Panteon were absolutely stunning. Keep in mind, these frescos are mostly ORIGINAL, and they look like they were painted yesterday. It is incredible and amazing to be able to see something 800 years old and have it look as it did the day they were painted. I've seen three other Romanesque churches in Spain, and none of them were as beautiful as this one - usually you need a solid creative imagination but pretty much the whole idea is there. I especially liked the Lord's Supper. We visited on a Saturday evening and were the only ones there, which made it even more special.

“Pretty but not impressive compared to others”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 October 2013

The Basilica itself wasn't that impressive but worth it if you're in the area. The Panteon Real has really unique history and I would absolutely recommend going if you are in León - it is basically the royal burial place for that region and the inside of the Panteon is pretty incredible, but I have still been to places that I enjoyed more. However, if you go the guides are free - check for the hours though. I know on Sundays that have guides every hour that normally start on the half hour and they last about 40 minutes. Check the tourist office for info on that and they will be very helpful. Also, entrance to the Panteon is 5 euros and entrance to the Basilica is free.
