Parador "Hostal San Marcos"

I had reserved a junior suite and had hoped that this would be sufficient to get us in to the old part of the hotel. It was not. The room was perfectly nice; but expensive for what it was.

Check in and out were slow and inefficient to the point of comedy.

The common areas and the atmosphere around the cloisters are wonderful and are worth it even if the hotel itself is a bit flaky. The breakfast buffet was excellent but a bit of a scrum because of the number of people there and the lack of matching numbers of waiters.

This parador needs taking over by Four Seasons and smartening up to match its prices.

I love staying in historical buildings, and when we had an opportunity to get a room at the Parador "Hostal San Marcos," we grabbed it. I booked the room through the official parador site about 7 or 8 months prior to our stay. We were able to get a discounted rate of 120€ per room, including full breakfast - which was less than the Golden Years or any other promotion. We were given a room in the older part of the building - on the 2nd floor, and to the far left. The room was filled with character - yet modern conveniences in bath and all important air conditioning in Leon for summer!

If you stay here, plan to take an hour or two roaming around the building - you will be glad you did! This 16th century monastery/hospital has had so many uses over the course of time. And now, it is one of the most elegant paradors in Spain!

Breakfast was wonderful - complete with champagne! So much to choose from - very atypical for Spanish breakfasts in most of the smaller hotels!

As to location, it was fine. It's located along the river, which gives you a natural point of direction when touring. It's about a 20 minute walk to the cathedral, and about 10 minutes from the San Isidro Museum - both of which I would highly recommend visiting. I would recommend taking a taxi if coming from the train station - it's about 7 or 8 euros, but in the heat, it's well worth it!

One more thing - join the Amigos program on the Official Parador website. It doesn't cost anything, and you get free drinks upon arrival!

Room Tip: I prefer the older portion of the building.

The exterior of the building is even more breathtaking when you're in front of it. Inside the hotel is also fabulous and just fascinating to wander around. However, if you haven't paid hundreds to stay in a suite your room will be in the modern annexe attached to the rear of the building. This is quite disappointing as you approach it from the car park but fear not as the rooms themselves retain the character of the original building and are very spacious and comfortable. Breakfast is great, lots of choice. The hotel is located a 15-20 minute walk from the cathedral and the old town where there are lots of bars and restaurants. Plaza San Martin in particular is good for tapas and has a great atmosphere.

Rooms all excellent, breakfast absolutely superb. Walking around the Parador is a real experience with so much history and items of interest to see.

The view you get of the Parador as you drive up is better than the picture.

A great couple of days. Thank you

An utterly amazing building to have a hotel in. A stunning historic building - almost a museum as well as a hotel. Staff helpful, room large and comfortable. I feel privileged to have been able to stay in a building such as this.
Food was standard Parador quality, which I generally find fairly good.

We loved the setting of this hotel and the ambiance of the building.

The common areas were absolutely stunning and it was great to read the history of the building.

The room however was a small space with a European bathroom facing the setting sun. The bed was small and lumpy and the pillow was wafer thin - nothing like in the movie "The Way".

We would have much preferred a Marriott Hotel room.

On the positive side, the breakfast spread was excellent and so was the WIFI speed.

In summer, ask for a room that does not face the setting sun.

Stunning frontage and wonderful to be able to wander about the old convent. Unfortunately the bedroom extension in the back was not so glorious to look at and the decor in the bedroom itself was very tired. The room was not very clean - hairs and toenail clippings left in the bathroom!
The dinner would have been wonderful except that my fish dish wasn't cooked properly and the fish at the bottom was still frozen. Breakfast was great.
