“Not in Salamanca, not a prime choice”
Reviewed 19 April 2014

This hotel was reserved when a major booking site fouled up our reservation for Good Friday and the following Saturday in Toledo. Salamanca was not in our original itinerary, and, on short notice, the Tryp was a replacement for a much better hotel in Toledo.

As it was unclear from said booking site that there are two Tryp properties in the Salamanca area, we naturally headed for the (much nicer, better situated) Tryp Hotel Salamanca, only to be redirected to what best may be described as her poorer step-sister, the Tryp Montalvo.

Outside the Salamanca city limits, in an industrial park far from the sights of the city, the property is fair enough, but quite isolated and not a good choice for anyone wishing to tour the city without having to drive, locate (very scarce) parking, etc.

Our reception was friendly. The room is quite nice and - yay! - several English-language TV channels are in existence. From our window, we can see the cathedrals in the city at a fair distance.

Dinner on the first night in the restaurant featured a "holy week" menu (Good Friday) with some fair choices at a reasonable price, even though the execution was decidedly mundane and the service was slow and uncaring.

A request to check on the non-functioning air conditioning on the morning of Day 2 was met with an unpleasant argument from the desk clerk on duty and required an actual threat of leaving to be resolved. The afternoon desk clerk, who had also checked us in, was left to resolve the problem and did so with aplomb.

Room service on the second night has been quite good and was a pleasant surprise as it arrived at our room a mere 12 minutes after ordering!

Breakfast here has been quite good, although the layout of the breakfast bar is poor and creates heavy crowding at various spots which could easily be remedied by a more thoughtful and careful layout.

As readers may guess, I am by profession a hotelier, and therefore much pickier than other guests may be, but if it isn't right, it isn't right.

There is substantial room for improvement at this property, although the basics are in place and it would not take an extreme effort to remedy some of the shortcomings here.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the side facing Salamanca, otherwise it's a parking lot view for you.

This hotel is perfect if you're driving through Spain. It's on an industrial estate right off the motorway, so easy to get to, and has free parking right outside the front door. The staff are friendly and helpful, happy to give you information about Salamanca, and the wee bar is great for grabbing a coffee in the morning.

We dined in the restaurant on our first night there, and the menu del dia is excellent value. The food isn't exactly haute cuisine, but it's tasty and for under 12 euro for three courses and a bottle of wine you can hardly complain, can you?

Quick tip: we were told it's not very easy to walk into town, but we found a footbridge over the motorway and from there it's just an easy half hour stroll. You turn left out of the hotel and walk down that road for a while 'til you reach a small park. Walk over the blue bridge on the left hand side and you just need to navigate through the industrial estate until you get to the side of the main road into town. It adds about a km onto the walk, but we were training for the West Highland Way so didn't really matter to us.

If you'd prefer to save the walking for once you're in the city centre, the hotel has a taxi which you can order at reception. I think it's 8 euro flat fare to get in on weekends, and 6 during the week. We took it on the Saturday night as it was raining, and we asked the taxi driver for restaurant recommendations. He went above and beyond. Instead of dropping us outside Plaza Mayor, as is typical, he took us up to Calle Van Dyk where all of the tapas and pincho bars are: and we weren't charged any extra.

We also loved the recommendation board at reception, where guests can write down their favourite things to see/do/eat in Salamanca. It's a good way to get a feel for the city and to pass on any knowledge you pick up. Oh, and the mini bar is excellent value! Usually you get ripped off here, but it's only 2.20 for a can of beer which isn't really that bad.

All in all we had a wonderful stay here, and I'd definitely not hesitate in recommending it to anyone passing through.

My wife and I stay here on our way south and on our way home, and have done so for the last 6 years The hotel and staff are always excellent, and we cannot fault them. We will continue to stay here. Thanks to ALL staff at the Montalvo. You can park the car outside the front door, and they have a garage underneath, all covered by security cameras.

Even though the Hotel is outside the city, I would recommend eating there. One of the best menus of the day I can recall on my travels around Spain. An incredible selection of dishes at an amazing price!

My family was so comfortable in this hotel. Great wifi! Close to city. My sister in law recommended this place for us and she was right. The staff was professional and friendly. And of course, you are close to all those fabulous salamanca pinchos--such great food! We love Spain!

We were quite impressed by this hotel. Built in 2002 it was refurbished three years ago (we were told at reception). Our room was quite satisfactory, modern with good TV and wifi and a lovely view of the Cathedral. Dinner at €11.90 including wine and water was very acceptable and the Buffet breakfast we found excellent.
It is a popular business hotel and the free underground parking (if you make a booking, otherwise €4) was a real bonus.

This is a business hotel that is located in some sort of industrial area. The beds are comfortable to sleep. However , the breakfast is disappointing for this class of hotel . The food is cold and neglected for a morning breakfast . It can be much improved. The front desk staff was very helpful in telling us where to park to explore the central part of the city . Kudos for that.
