This hotel was reserved when a major booking site fouled up our reservation for Good Friday and the following Saturday in Toledo. Salamanca was not in our original itinerary, and, on short notice, the Tryp was a replacement for a much better hotel in Toledo.
As it was unclear from said booking site that there are two Tryp properties in the Salamanca area, we naturally headed for the (much nicer, better situated) Tryp Hotel Salamanca, only to be redirected to what best may be described as her poorer step-sister, the Tryp Montalvo.
Outside the Salamanca city limits, in an industrial park far from the sights of the city, the property is fair enough, but quite isolated and not a good choice for anyone wishing to tour the city without having to drive, locate (very scarce) parking, etc.
Our reception was friendly. The room is quite nice and - yay! - several English-language TV channels are in existence. From our window, we can see the cathedrals in the city at a fair distance.
Dinner on the first night in the restaurant featured a "holy week" menu (Good Friday) with some fair choices at a reasonable price, even though the execution was decidedly mundane and the service was slow and uncaring.
A request to check on the non-functioning air conditioning on the morning of Day 2 was met with an unpleasant argument from the desk clerk on duty and required an actual threat of leaving to be resolved. The afternoon desk clerk, who had also checked us in, was left to resolve the problem and did so with aplomb.
Room service on the second night has been quite good and was a pleasant surprise as it arrived at our room a mere 12 minutes after ordering!
Breakfast here has been quite good, although the layout of the breakfast bar is poor and creates heavy crowding at various spots which could easily be remedied by a more thoughtful and careful layout.
As readers may guess, I am by profession a hotelier, and therefore much pickier than other guests may be, but if it isn't right, it isn't right.
There is substantial room for improvement at this property, although the basics are in place and it would not take an extreme effort to remedy some of the shortcomings here.
