“Former Grandeur but Quirky”
Reviewed 19 May 2012

Restricting my remarks to the bathroom since everyone before me has covered the room and/or restaurant. We are talking black marble! Everywhere! That's the good part (or at least the normal part.) From here we veer off into the stratosphere. The bathroom was outfitted with the usual commode and bidet. However, they were separated from the wash bowl and shower by a glass sliding door. Can someone tell me the purpose of that? Most important, bring your flashlight into the bathroom and examine the workings of the shower before you enter. I mean it! Yes, there is a lovely spa tub with jets that wil assumably pepper your body with water. But it's too late to discover how to manuver yourself and the jets after you've begun. There are 2 handles: the top adjusts water temp and as you turn clockwise, the water becomes cooler. Easy, right? But if you go to one milimeter past cold (perhaps thinking it will shut off the water), you are blasted with ice water coming from the entire wall! And you better not scream, 'cause the entire hotel is filled with your new friends on your bus tour. Be advised; look before you leap.

The location of the hotel is fabulous - walking distance to the historical attractions and the pedestrian shopping streets. Some of the best restaurants are within blocks. The hotel has undoubtedly rated itself the five stars where I think it would hit a solid three. The rooms are long and narrow, but very well appointed. The TVs date from when I was a kid and there is no WIFI in the rooms (but free in the lobby). Service was very good. Breakfast comes in at about 14 euros, but the spread was as good as you get in other hotels in Spain. Parking at ~15 euros a day is conveniently located within the hotel. We stayed with two couples and our kids - the room was large enough to accommodate a crib, a pull-out double hide-a-bed and the typical Italian double bed (where they stick two single beds together). We stayed three nights. Would we go back? Likely.

The hotel is about 4 blocks from the Plaza Major (Town Center). I just happend to be in Spain during the coldest time of the year, so I was happy to see and feel the heat working nicely. The hotel has a old but classy feeling of royalty. The staff was excellent and very helpful. Very quiet during the night, the room was spacious and the bed was comfortable. Cable TV and free internet connection only. WI-FI can only be access in the lobby as many hotels are in Europe. The restaurant was very quaint with a reasonable tasting breakfast buffe. Remember, Spain is not know for elaborate spreads when it comes to breakfast. Mainly fresh sweet breads, coffee, fruits and OJ. Overall the experiences was great. I would stay there again.

The best thing about Hotel Alameda Palace is the location - very central. The building and reception area are grand but a bit tired. Room was comfortable, as was bed. Other reviewers mention noisy air con, but I did not have that problem. Breakfast was pretty ordinary, but plentiful. Did not eat other meals there. I would stay there again.

This hotel is right in the centre of Salamanca, near all the sights. It is lovely in a grand way - lots of glass, marble and gilt, but a bit soulless. The breakfast was stunning - far too much food for the number of guests. The decor is old fashioned and in need of a refresh but the room was clean and comfortable. We had a room which looked onto the inner courtyard so it was very quiet.

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room, off the main street
